In the words of our Year 6 leaver’s production…WOW what a year!

It really has been another year of uncertainty and adapting to the ever-changing rules and guidance that has governed our lives for so long. As we close out on this academic year, we have seen the removal of most of the restrictions in our lives which will hopefully lead to us all being able to enjoy a relaxing summer break.

However, as the last couple of weeks has proved to us, there are still risks posed by COVID and the best protection is through making sensible choices with our loved ones and ourselves.

I hope that you and your families are able to explore and enjoy some good quality time together over the summer. Remember to make the most of the good times that you spend together, and take heed from the quote below:

And now a couple of goodbyes…

…firstly to our Year 6 pupils. They really have been a real credit to our school, and a fantastic Year 6 class. They have adapted well and proven themselves to be brilliant ambassadors and representatives for Shephalbury Park.

Having watched your production and Leaver’s videos, I know that many of you will miss us as much as we will miss you! We wish you all the best of luck in your journey through secondary school and beyond, and want to hear about all of your achievements, as you get older.

If you would like to see the Year 6 production and Leaver’s videos please click the link below:

…next to our Nursery pupils who will not be joining us in Reception next year. We have loved being your first stepping stone on your educational journey. We wish you all the very best of luck as you start your new schools in September.

…and finally, to Miss Gaston, who will be leaving us after 3 years working as a member of our support staff team. I would like to thank her for her hard work and commitment to our pupils during this time, and wish her the best of luck as she returns to working in an early years setting in September.

We did not hand out certificates today for Bucket Fillers or Shephalbury LEARNERs, however I have handed out 2 Headteacher’s Awards this week for some amazing writing in Year 1. Leo and Lilly, both used our Talk 4 Writing strategies to create their own adventure stories whilst they were isolating last week. Both of them had really thought about the language that they used, and it is clear that they are ready for Year 2! Well done to you both!

You should have received a copy of a letter sent today from our chair of Governors, Cameron Smith, today. If you have not received it, you will be able to download it below. I would like to thank the Governors for their support for our staff and pupils throughout this year and look forward to working with them again next year.

When we return to school on September 2nd we will be following the same drop off and collection routines that are currently in place. Please remember to book your lunches online, and your child will NOT need to bring a water bottle from home…we will be providing them for all pupils.

I will write to you all prior to our return to provide any additional information that may become relevant over the holidays.

Finally, I would to end this year with a couple of thank you messages. To all of the staff that work in our school. Not matter what role you have in our team, you make a huge difference to our school and in turn the education and opportunities that we are able to offer our community. You really are a fantastic team to work with, and both our pupils and I appreciate the hard work and effort that everyone puts in every day!

Thank you to all of our pupils. Each and every day you make us smile (well mostly!!), your love and enjoyment of our school is something which makes our school truly unique. You all have the ability to be great Shephalbury LEARNERs and we look forward to seeing you again in September!

Thank you to our families and wider community. We all know and appreciate the challenges we have all faced throughout COVID, but your support for our school has not waivered. Every member of our community plays an integral role in our development and successes, so thank you all very much!

I hope that you all have a restful and enjoyable summer, and look forward to seeing you and your families back at Shephalbury Park on Thursday 2nd September.

What a difference a week makes! Our excitement and anticipation for the football this time last week has given way to a return to remote learning and isolation for half of our school, along with the unfortunate loss on penalties to Italy.

The initial aftermath of the football saddened me like many others, I have seen the galvanising effect that the national football team has had in and around our school over recent weeks. For quite a while, it has formed the basis of many conversations amongst both pupils and staff, yet those that have represented our country so admirably have had to suffer some horrific abuse.

As a school, we encourage each other to recognise and celebrate our individualities and differences, as this is what makes us all special. We at Shephalbury Park are wholly committed to ensuring that we continue educate our pupils and play our part in eradicating racism.

The achievements of the national team this summer go a long way to demonstrate the strength of working together. Taking players of all ages, races and experiences to come together harmoniously in this tournament has shown the value in creating a clear culture of togetherness in being successful. This is something that we as a school promote and will continue to in our efforts to educate our pupils.

School has been a lot quieter than usual this week, with Years 1, 2, 5 & 6 all at home isolating and engaging in remote learning. We have very much missed having you all around, and look forward to having you back next week!

Having kept regular contact with all of the staff that are at home isolating, I am pleased at how well everyone has slipped back into engaging in their learning from home again. I appreciate how tough it is to have to isolate at short notice, and arrange to facilitate learning at home. However, the dedication and engagement levels have been fantastic!

I hope that you have found your parent consultations useful this week, to discuss your child’s report. Thank you all for your understanding in our short notice change of arrangements of these. Over the next week children will be bringing home their books from this year, we would like to keep the books of a select group of children from each class. If your child’s book are requested to be kept, we will arrange for you to see them and return them to us.

Now onto the celebrations for the week. Our assembly this week incorporated both those on and off site. I took some time during the day to award those pupils who have been isolating recognising pupils in receipt of the Shephalbury LEARNER of the week, and also handing out some Headteacher’s Awards. During assembly I visited those in class to reward the children in school who had been nominated. Bucket Fillers this week received a Jaffa Cake Bar!

As always our staff have seen pupils from around the school working hard to demonstrate the 7 attributes that make up a Shephalbury LEARNER, reflect, solve, create, grow, risk, think, stretch, grow and risk through the lessons and activities that they have participated in. The children listed below have been nominated by their teachers for being Shephalbury LEARNERS this week, a huge well done to each and every one of them:

Nursery: Alfie- Think                         Reception: Isabella- Grow

Year 1: Leo- Create                           Year 2: Sofia- Create

Year 3: Ethan                                     Year 4: Alessia- Grow

Year 5: Jacob- Think                         Year 6: Lily- Solve

A huge well done to the following children for being nominated by their teachers for being Bucket Fillers this week:

N: Melissa M

R: Henry F

Y3: Melisa

Y4: Skye

There has been 5 Headteacher’s Award handed out this week.

Firstly, for a fabulous Viking shield, was Ava (Y4). Not only did her design look fantastic, she described the creative process that she went through to develop and produce the final product. A fine shield, fit for any Viking! Great work Ava!

The next four awards are all for pupils who have been accessing their learning remotely over the last week.

Roma, Maia and Bella (Y2) have all been using the skills, language and sentence structures from their English lessons to create their own myths. Each of them has really impressed both Mrs Lewis and me with the quality of work. Super work girls…well done!

Next in Year 2 is Pippa, who has really grown this week in her ability to work with fractions, something she found difficult initially. Well done for persevering Pippa!

And Finally is Tia (YR) who has independently been writing some facts about tapirs (Mrs Cropley's favourite animal). Having researched them with the help of Mrs Lee, Tia learned the different facts and wrote them out beautifully on her own. Super work Tia...well done!

And just like that the end of term is in sight. We look forward to welcoming back pupils in Years 5 & 6 on Monday, and those in Years 1 & 2 on Tuesday next week.

I hope that you get to enjoy the sunshine over the weekend!

Friday 9th July 2021

Another great week here at Shephalbury Park, that has culminated in us recognising the achievements so far of our National football team, and hoping that they perform with courage and determination on Sunday evening. Everyone entered into the swing of things today, with children and adults kitted out in their football attire or white, red and blue. We also had some of our favourite football anthems chorusing over the speakers at drop off, collection and during break times.

My assembly at the start of this week was about Gareth Southgate, and how he has demonstrated some of the key attributes of a Shephalbury LEARNER. From that famous moment in 1996, when he missed a penalty against Germany, to going on to have a successful playing career and now managing one of the most successful England teams. He has reflected on his mistakes, taken many risks and grown to be the manager he is today. A fine example for us all and here is hoping that he can keep a smile on all of our faces for the beginning of next week!

On Thursday this week, we were able to hold our transition morning for all pupils. It was fantastic to see (and hear) everyone outside together at the same time at drop off! All of our children really enjoyed their mornings, getting to know their new teachers and familiarising themselves with their new surroundings. In addition to this, we have held some new parents talks for our incoming Nursery and Reception pupils. It has been great to welcome some new families to our community, and we look forward to seeing them all again in September.

We also welcomed another new member to our school community this week…some eagle-eyed children spotted a rather large moth resting on the wooden frame in the KS1 playground. After a bit of research we discovered that, it was a Privet Hawk Moth- the largest native moth found in the United Kingdom. So as to keep it safe from the hustle and bustle of playtime on the playground we safely relocated it on our school grounds. If you would like to take some time to find out a bit more about this type of moth with your child please follow the link below.

Tonight marks the start of some exciting activities for our class of 2021 (Year 6 leavers). They will be having a fun filled evening at school, with all sorts of fun and activities, fish and chips, a movie and a sleepover in the hall. They have been working hard to create an end of year movie production of their own which will soon be premiered on our school website. We hope that you all have a great evening at school!

As I am sure many of you will have seen in the news this week, there has been new guidance for schools issued by the government. This new guidance is applicable from when we, as a country, enter Step 4 of the lockdown easing measures. Which means for us, we will be maintaining the routines and expectations that have been in place all year.

This includes the wearing of masks whilst on site, and isolating for 10 days if your children are close contacts of anyone who tests positive. Our start and end of day procedures will be remaining the same, as will the maintenance of our bubble structures internally.

You will have received you child’s report today, and next week we will be hosting our socially distanced parent consultations. We look forward to meeting with you to discuss your child’s report, but please ensure that you have read the guidance and expectations prior to attending the meeting.

Now onto the celebrations for the week. There was a buzz of excitement in this week’s assembly with so much excitement for the football. But as always it is important to take the time to recognise and reward pupils for being Shephalbury LEARNERS and Bucket Fillers. We also recognised those who have had a birthday this week, shared the attendance data from last week, and had a look at the house point totals. Bucket Fillers this week received a raspberry Mini Roll!

Nursery: Sophie- Grow                                 Reception: Ronnie- Grow

Year 1: Steffen- Grow                                   Year 2: Oscar- Grow

Year 3: Riley- Stretch                                    Year 4: Ella- Reflect

Year 5: Katie- Grow                                   Year 6: Noah- Grow

A huge well done to the following children for being nominated by their teachers for being Bucket Fillers this week:

N: Tommy

R: Alys

Y1: Jessica

Y2: Richard

Y3: George B

Y4: Milly

Y5: Owen

Y6: Crystal

There has been two Headteacher’s Award handed out this week.

Firstly, for hard work by Bethany (Y3). She has been working incredibly hard on learning and developing her knowledge of phonics over the last 8 weeks. This has led to a fantastic improvement and brilliant progress…super work Bethany, well done!

Eleanor (R) also received a Headteacher’s Award this week for her innovative use of leaves to create a book. The learning about caterpillars and the life cycle of a butterfly has captivated our Reception class this week. Eleanor created her own book about this lifecycle using leaves. Brilliant work Eleanor…keep it up!

Now we can all get home and prepare for the excitement of Sunday evening. I look forward to seeing everyone on Monday morning, after what will hopefully have been a memorable match!

Have a great weekend,

Friday 2nd July 2021

We have arrived in the final month of the academic year at Shephalbury Park, but we are still full steam ahead in and around school. After our fantastic Sports Week last week, we have returned to our regular lessons with enthusiasm and dedication, and many of our pupils showing the key attributes of the Shephalbury LEARNER.

Our Year 6 pupils are reaching the end of their learning journey with us, and it has been a real joy to see them so involved with creating their end of year performance. This will be a first of its kind for an end of year production for one of our Year 6 cohorts, their very own movie! I have seen and heard snippets around the school on my travels, and even had my office used as a studio, but other than that don’t know too much about it. I am really looking forward to the premiere in the next couple of weeks.

We have been working hard to create a transition program for our pupils despite the current restrictions that are in place. We will be holding new to Nursery and Reception meetings next week to welcome new members to school. Pupils will also have the chance to meet and get to know their new teachers and spend a morning with them. All parents should have been sent the staffing arrangements for the next academic year today via email, if you didn’t get it please contact the office.

At the end of next week you will receive your child’s annual report, followed by the opportunity to meet with their current class teacher in the following week. These meetings are for you to have a chat about your child’s report should you want to.

Following on from our Sports Week, Mr Klein has compiled a highlights reel for everyone to watch. If you want to have a watch and see what happened throughout the week please have a watch by following the link below. A huge thank you to Mr Klein for compiling it, and to the rest of the staff for capturing these moments!

A huge thank you to those of you who purchased an ice lolly today and made a donation to the Sepsis charity that we are supporting. In total we have raised a fabulous £248! Also thank you to my school councillors in Year 5 & 6 for helping with the logistics and letter writing.

Now onto the celebrations for the week. This week’s assembly saw much excitement with the announcement of our Sports Day winners, but we also took time to reward pupils for being Shephalbury LEARNERS and Bucket Fillers. We also recognised those who have had a birthday this week, shared the attendance data from last week, and had a look at the house point totals. Bucket Fillers this week received a Blackcurrant Jaffa Cake Bar!

Next was Sofia (Y4) who has really excelled this week with the sewing activities that Year 4 having been engaging with. She created her own rainbow pattern and was so confident with her sewing skills that she was also helping her friends. Excellent needlework Sofia…well done!

Back in Year 2 and I was blown away with some of the writing that I was fortunate enough to listen today. Lilly, Freddie, Richard and Amelia have been working hard on their sentence construction, varying them and utilising language for effect. They each read me the story opening that they had created and each of them had some fantastic authorial qualities. Well done to all 4 of you…I am looking forward to seeing your writing next week!

And finally this week is another award for writing, Lillyanna (Y1) has worked incredibly hard to independently create her own piece of writing. Her writing was clear and we read it back through together. Well done Lillyanna…we are really proud of you!

Friday 25th June 2021

It’s Friday already and the end of our Sports Week…and what a week it has been!

It all kicked off on Friday last week with our Rocktopus experience. Our 4 music videos are now available for you all to watch on the website. Pupils have been watching them all week in their classes, and I warn you now that they are quite catchy tunes! To have a look for yourselves please follow the link below:

On Monday this week we were joined by Commonwealth gold medal sprinter Ryan Scott, who challenged us to take part in a range of physical challenges. He also spoke to us about never giving up, believing in yourself  and being determined to reach your dreams. This was a fantastic experience for all of us, and Ryan inspired many of us to live out our Shephalbury LEARNER attributes.

Throughout the rest of the week we have had our Benchball championships taking place in the afternoons, and our week culminated yesterday with Sports Day. The format was adapted this year, and all children got to take part and earn points in a series of field events (jumping and throwing) followed by our traditional races. There was a wonderful sense of support and determination in all classes, and everyone really tried their best in everything that they did.

In our classes, we have all been learning about different countries that have hosted the Olympic Games. Children have been taking part in lots of engaging and informative cross-curricular work in art, D&T, English, geography and history. Each class has made a wonderful display to show off their learning.

A huge well done to everyone for competing so well and with good sportspersonship! A huge thank you to Mr Rust for organising the week and putting on such an enjoyable time for us all. We are currently working on creating a highlights video from across the week, which should be ready at some point next week for you all to enjoy.

To see the final outcome of Sports Day and find out who the winners were, take a look at the video below (thank you Mr Klein for the video!):

We have seen throughout the week, pupils from around the school working hard to demonstrate the 7 attributes that make up a Shephalbury LEARNER, reflect, solve, create, grow, risk, think, stretch, grow and risk through the activities that they have participated in. The quote below encapsulates much of the effort that we have seen throughout the week.

Bucket Fillers this week received a Penguin bar!

She had been looking at different types of interesting houses and writing about them, utilising her phonic knowledge. She produced some great work, something to be really proud of…well done Olivia!

And that is nearly it for this week…next Friday we will be sending out our staffing list for the next academic year. You will be able to see which adults will be working with the different classes. We will be following this up with our transition morning on Thursday 8th July, where children will be meeting their new teacher and spending the morning with them in their new classes.

Have a great weekend, and let’s hope for a bit more sunshine!

Friday 18th June 2021

Well it is that time of the week again, and despite the rubbish weather we have had today, there has been much noise and excitement filling the corridors of our school today. We were visited by Rocktopus, a rock band that came to work with our children to create their own songs and music videos to help them stay fit and active. The rock band experience was really enjoyed by all, and you can see some photos below…and the music videos will be uploaded once edited.

We have continued this week instilling the 7 attributes that make up a Shephalbury LEARNER, reflect, solve, create, grow, risk, think, stretch, grow and risk. It is clear around the school that pupils are really trying their hardest to demonstrate these. Once again, if you would like to spend some time learning about these at home with your children, please feel free to watch the assemblies that are uploaded on our website:

As we have now introduced each of them and, teachers will be looking for and awarding their weekly certificate, to pupils who demonstrate any of the different attributes. It is important to recognise that being a Shephalbury LEARNER is about embracing a growth mindset, challenging yourself, taking risks and moving out of your comfort zone to improve.

In school next week we will be holding our Sports Week. All pupils will have the chance to learn about the culture and geography of an Olympic nation, participate in sports day and benchball tournaments and meet a Commonwealth gold medallist. We are all really excited to take part, and we will be making a highlights reel to share with you all.

Next week also sees another national initiative, National Thank a Teacher Day on Wednesday 23rd June. This is a day that seeks to recognise the hard work and dedication that all school staff put into their jobs. As a school we will be thanking our staff in a different way every day next week. I know how much it would mean to our staff if your children would also like to join in with thanking the staff that work with them. If you would like some more ideas please follow the link below.

I am pleased to let you know that Kid Fit will be running their holiday play scheme at school throughout the summer holidays. The booking link is now live, and there is lots more information on the booking site. There is also an early bird discount of 10% for bookings made before 2nd July.

Now onto more celebrations for the week. Once again I donned my trainers and took the trip around school to reward pupils for being Shephalbury LEARNERS and Bucket Fillers. We also recognised those who have had a birthday this week, shared the attendance data from last week, and had a look at the house point totals. Bucket Fillers this week received a Jaffa Cake bar!

There has been an abundance of Headteacher’s Awards this week for children of all ages across the school.

First up was Charlie (R) who has been working incredibly hard at improving his phonics recently. Not only has he been working hard when in a group with an adult, but he has been applying his knowledge independently during his child initiated learning. This is great work Charlie…you a developing all of the skills of a Shephalbury LEARNER!

Next are a couple of children from our Year 1 class. Leo has been keeping me regularly updated on his commitment to completing his Numbots practice. He has now been logging on and applying himself for 100 days straight! A brilliant achievement and fantastic drive to stretch yourself every single day. Keep it up!

McKenzie (Y1) has also been recognised this week for her maths work. Not only has she been working hard to complete her challenges independently, but she has been supporting her friends in understanding their work as well. Super work McKenzie!

Next up were 3 of our Year 5 pupils, Richie, Lewis and Henry have been working hard on developing their writing with Mrs Grizzell. Basing their work on a text called The Old Mill, they have been looking at how they can improve the text by adding additional detail. Each of them had produced some very thoughtful and well developed ideas that improved the original. Awesome work boys!

More children in Year 1 working hard this week were Steffen and Liam, who furthered their learning by researching information about the planets in our solar system. This began as a challenge set by Miss Martin, but Steffen and Liam continued their learning in their own time and found some great facts from the books that they were using. Keep up the hard work!

Finally this week were another 2 boys from Year 5, who have been really enjoying their RE recently. George and Finley wrote their own versions of the creation story, considering the impact of humans on the Earth. It made for thoughtful reading, and both boys had really considered the environmental impact many of the choices that humans make every day have had on the Earth. Excellent work boys!

Have a great weekend, and let’s hope that England are able to give us something to cheer about this evening!

Friday 11th June 2021

Welcome back the final half term of this academic year! I hope that you all enjoyed the break, which was made especially nice by the recent upturn in the weather. With the lovely weather staying with us, I shared a few updates and reminders with parents through a letter earlier this week. If you are yet to read it, or did not receive it. You are able to download a copy just below:

Our return has seen us slip back into our same high expectations and consistent routines with our children, they are all back into the swing of daily school life. As a school we are working hard to develop the way that we teach and learn maths and the processes of writing.

Last half term we began our journey with maths, and pupils now have a greater independence with the challenges that they attempt. We are encouraging them to challenge themselves, and deepen their learning in all lessons. Our children are really rising to the challenge, which has been pleasing to see.

This half term we are beginning to introduce some of the principles of Talk 4 Writing, by providing increased opportunities for pupils to orally rehearse and internalise texts, and build their writing through some different processes. You may hear your child talk to you about story mapping and boxing up, which are some of the techniques we are using with them.

Some of the feedback from the parent focus group that met before half term suggested that some more information clips or videos would be good to help parents understand some of the more up to date techniques and methods used in school. This is something that we intend on doing once we have developed our in school practice in the next academic year.

We were visited this week by our Hertfordshire Improvement Partner, who works with us to assess our effectiveness and validate the work that we are doing. We looked across the school in classes and spoke to pupils and staff about the developments that we have made to both maths and Shephalbury LEARNER. She was impressed with the learning that was taking place. And commented positively on the way in which pupils articulated their enjoyment of the changes in maths, and how this helped them as learners.

This week, we are focusing on the final attribute of our Shephalbury LEARNER principles, risk. This is key to developing resilient and independent learners, as it ensures that we are encouraging our pupils to challenge themselves out of their comfort zone. Taking a risk in their learning provides them with the opportunity to deepen their understanding of the concepts that they are learning. We are encouraging all pupils to accept that it is ok to get things wrong…provided we learn how to correct it and improve on it.

If you would like to see this week’s assembly to discuss it further with your child please follow the link below:

The children listed below have been nominated by their teachers for their risk taking this week, a huge well done to each and every one of them:

Nursery: Teddy                                  Reception: Henry F

Year 1: Lilly                                        Year 2: Olly

Year 3: Kyrillos                                   Year 4: Hannah

Year 5: Finnley                                   Year 6: Dennis

From next week my assemblies will continue to focus on the range of attributes, and how children can continue to develop these in themselves and in their learning.

Now onto more celebrations for the week. Once again I donned my trainers and took the trip around school to reward pupils for being Bucket Fillers. We also recognised those who have had a birthday this week, shared the attendance data from last week, and had a look at the house point totals. Bucket Fillers this week received a Jaffa Cake bar!

A huge well done to the following children for being nominated by their teachers this week:

N: Sebastian

R: George

Y1: Steffen

Y2: Ephraim

Y3: Yumna

Thursday 27th May

Well we have made it to the end of our first full half term at school in 2021…and what a busy 7 weeks we have had!

I have had the chance to reflect on the progress that we have made as a school since returning. Pupils are focused and engaged in their learning across our entire school. The calm and purposeful atmosphere that is created by our staff ensures that we are able to be creative and support the needs of all of our learners. We have seen some great developments to the teaching and learning of maths across the school. Pupils are also really enthused with our Shephalbury LEARNER approach to learning behaviours.

This week we have welcomed 3 of our governors to school to look at the way that these have been implemented, and the impact that it is having on our pupils’ learning. Below you will see some of the feedback provided to them by pupils around the school:

*Pupils told us that they really liked the concept of the Shephalbury Learner and understood what each of the words meant for them and how the words can be applied to their learning in school

Pupil A “We like the Shephalbury Learner, it helps me know I have to step up my game!”

Pupil B “It helps us to think outside the box”

Pupil C “It’s like you’re growing your brain”

*The school council shared:

  • That the Shephalbury Learner helps people feel determined
  • The new Maths learning helps us feel stretched
  • They like the celebration assemblies and know if they do well in their learning they get rewarded

The responses from pupils is a clear result of the hard work that our staff are putting in to embed and expose their classes to these concepts. They are committed to providing all pupils with tailored opportunities to improve and develop in all aspects of their learning and personal skills.

A huge thank you to all of the staff for their continued support and hard work this half term!

The focus of this week’s Shephalbury LEARNER attribute has been stretch, and it is very true to say that I have seen many pupils working hard to stretch their learning this week by taking on increased challenges and improving their work. My assembly at the start of the week encouraged pupils to stretch their brains by challenging themselves, making mistakes and learning from them.

If you would like to see this week’s assembly to discuss it further with your child please follow the link below:

After half term we will be looking at our final attribute, risk. Please feel free to check out the assembly when it goes online!

Now onto more celebrations for the week. Once again I took the trip around school this morning to reward pupils for being Bucket Fillers and to recognise those who have been awarded Headteacher’s Awards. We also recognised those who have had a birthday this week, shared the attendance data from last week, and had a look at the house point totals. Bucket Fillers this week received a chocolate mini-roll!

A huge well done to the following children for being nominated by their teachers this week:

N: Ayaaz

R: Ethan

Y1: Violet

Y2: Pippa

Y3: Noorisha

Y4: Ethan M

Y5: Alan

Y6: Walid

This week I have handed out Headteacher’s Awards to 4 children, each of them for fantastic work in different areas of the curriculum and outside of the curriculum.

First up this week were 2 members of our Year 1 class. There have been many children in this class that have been brought to my attention for such fantastic commitment and progress in their learning recently. They have loved their Explorers topic, and last week were tasked with sketching some rainforest animals. Both Jake and Freddie produced some incredibly detailed and well considered sketches of a tree frog and a parrot.

If this is the standard of their artwork in Year 1, I am very much looking forward to seeing their work as they progress through our school. Amazing artistic work boys…well done!

Another Year 1 pupil who has been going above and beyond recently is Olivia. Enthralled by the Explorers, she has been going home every night and independently created a book full of facts, pictures, maps and diagrams about the World. She is demonstrating many of the attributes that we expect of our Shephalbury LEARNERs, and she has produced something to be really proud of. Awesome work Olivia…keep it up!

And finally this week was Teddy (Y5), who has worked hard to improve the standard of his handwriting over the course of this year. He attributes his improvements to taking more time and practicing regulalrly in his own time at home. The results are clear, and we are very proud of this mature attitude to self development and improvement. Another example of a Shephalbury LEARNER. Great work Teddy!

One member of our school community who deserves a mention this week is Billy (Y6) who came to show me the trophy and medal that he had received for playing with his football team AFC Walkern at a tournament that was held on the pitch at Charlton Athletic FC. His team finished an incredible 2nd, finishing runners up to a team of academy footballers from Kent. This is a fantastic achievement...well done Billy!

A reminder if you are still looking for a holiday activity for your children…Kid Fit will be here at school from Tuesday to Thursday of half term 10am-4pm each day. They will be doing a wide range of activities indoors and out. If you are interested, have a look at their page on our website, where you will also find a link to book online:

With the second half of the Summer term approaching I just wanted to provide a couple of updates for everyone. We will be holding Sports Week at school for all pupils from 21st – 25th June. This week will incorporate cross-curricular learning and a range of sporting activities and events. More information relating to this will be sent out to parents once we return.

Teachers will be sending out reports for pupils in July, and you will all be offered the chance to have a socially distanced meeting with your child’s teachers after this. Once again more information will be sent out at the appropriate time.

As we enter the half term break I hope that the weather stays as it has been today, so that we are all able to take a break and safely enjoy some of our newfound freedoms responsibly with friends.

I look forward to seeing everyone back in school at normal time on Monday 7th June!

Friday 21st May

A windy end to the week, and hopefully we will see a nice weekend, although the forecast does not look positive at the moment!

As we approach the end of this half term there is much to be positive about. Our children have reintegrated back into our routines and expectations really well. They are engaging with and enjoying lessons across the full breadth of the curriculum. Pupils are buying into our Shephalbury LEARNER attributes and this is clearly evident in classrooms and in the conversations that I am having with them.

The disruption to learning that we have seen over the last year, has made us really consider our transition processes in school. We are working hard to ensure that we provide all of our pupils with a good quality transition, so that they are really well prepared for the next stage in the educational journey. Some of this work has already begun, in particularly with our oldest pupils in Year 6, and there will be more of this across the school next half term.

The focus of this week’s Shephalbury LEARNER attribute has been think. My assembly at the start of the week introduced the idea of critical thinking- identifying a problem, thinking about a range of possible solutions and reaching a solution by applying the skills and knowledge that we possess.

If you would like to see this week’s assembly to discuss it further with your child please follow the link below:

The children listed below have been nominated by their teachers for their thinking this week, a huge well done to each and every one of them:

Nursery: Lewis                                               Reception: Eleanor

Year 1: Lillyanna                                                        Year 2: Lilly

Year 5: Jacob                                                  Year 6: Annabell

Next week we will be focusing on the attribute of stretch. Please feel free to check out the assembly when it goes online next week!

Bucket Fillers this week received a Galaxy cake bar, very kindly donated by Mrs Lee, thank you!

A huge well done to the following children for being nominated by their teachers this week:

N: Lillee

R: Olivia

Y1: Molly

Y2: Richard

Y3: Ben

Y4: Skye

Y5: Amelia Q

Y6: Angelika

This week I have handed out Headteacher’s Awards to 6 children, each of them for fantastic work in different areas of the curriculum and outside of the curriculum.

First up this week was Matthew (R) who has demonstrated many of our Shephalbury LEARNER attributes. He encountered a problem this week in the EYFS garden…a hoop stuck in the tree! He worked his way through a range of possible solutions to try and free it from the branch. He tried an assortment of equipment and methods, and never once gave up! This is a brilliant attitude to have Matthew, and we are proud of you for the way that you approached this problem.

Next up this week is someone else who regularly demonstrates that he is a true Shephalbury LEARNER…Lenny B (Y1). He has really impressed Mrs Dean and myself with his science work, drawing a brilliant picture and then independently labelling it. I am really pleased to have seen it and discussed it with Lenny, and he identified his favourite creature from the picture as the ladybird. Keep up the hard work Lenny!

Another member of Reception who has been working hard this week is Florence, who has really impressed with her quick recall of subtraction facts when subtracting 1. She has memorised them at home and was able to recall all of the facts. Great work Florence…keep it up!

Two members of our Year 5 class have combined brilliantly this week during the D & T lessons, designing and making a working cog system. Both Hobie and Amelia persevered to create a fantastic model. I am reliably informed that they embodied our Shephalbury LEARNER attributes throughout their learning. Super work guys!

And finally this week was Dylan, who is no stranger to my blog recently! He identified an inaccuracy in the answers that have been provided to one of the activities that he had completed. Not only could he identify the issue, he could explain the error and provide the correct answer and reasoning for it. A brilliant display of the depth of his maths knowledge and understanding. Super work Dylan!

They will be doing a wide range of activities indoors and out. If you are interested, have a look at their page on our website, where you will also find a link to book online:

I hope that you all have a lovely weekend and look forward to seeing everyone on next week!

Friday 14th May

The end of what has felt like a very busy week for everyone around school!

I would like to start this week by sharing some good news, Mrs Hart is expecting her first child later on this year. We are really pleased for her and her husband Tom, and wish her well on her journey through what is a really exciting period of her life.

Once again this week, Mrs Cropley, Mrs Dean and myself have been visiting classes across the school to see how pupils are accessing their learning. As last week, there is so much positive learning happening in all classes, with pupils engaged and motivated by the work that has been set for them.

This week some of our community have celebrated Eid al-Fitr with their families. Eid, which is Arabic for 'feast' or 'festival', is celebrated by Muslims to mark significant events in the Islamic lunar calendar. In the 9th month, commonly known as Ramadan, Muslims far and wide observe fasting from dawn to dusk. Eid al-Fitr is the festival of the breaking of fast where family and friends come together to indulge in a spread.

Your child will be given some sweets today to bring home as a gift to celebrate Eid, donated by Ayaaz (Nursery) and his family. Many thanks to them for this kind gesture.

On behalf of our school I would like to wish those who have celebrated Eid Mubarak!

If you would like to find out more with your children at home, please follow the links below:

The focus of this week’s Shephalbury LEARNER attribute has been grow. There are two ways in which we are encouraging the pupils to grow in school at the moment. One way is by challenging themselves to grow their brain, skills and knowledge, the other is through growing in confidence.

Growing in confidence with our learning, and in the approach that we take with our learning is vitally important as we try to develop independence. In school we are working hard to encourage pupils to challenge themselves and persevere when things are tough. By doing this and developing a growth mindset, children, and adults, will grow in confidence when tackling problems and challenges in their learning enabling them to be more resilient and independent.

If you would like to see this week’s assembly to discuss it further with your child please follow the link below:

The children listed below have been nominated by their teachers for their creative approach to learning this week, a huge well done to each and every one of them:

Nursery: Joshua                                                         Reception: Matthew

Year 1: Lenny S                                                          Year 2: Emilia

Year 3: George B                                                        Year 4: Ruby

Year 5: Isabel                                                             Year 6: Holly

Next week we will be focusing on developing our understanding of the next part of our LEARNER mnemonic, think.

N: Felicity

R: Florence

Y1: Ottilie

Y2: Hamish

Y3: Leanna

Y4: Jenson

Y5: Ellis

Y6: Maks

This week I have handed out Headteacher’s Awards to 5 children, each of them for fantastic work in different areas of the curriculum and outside of the curriculum.

First up this week was someone who has achieved something fantastic outside of school. Ethan P (Y4) who has been committed to practicing taekwondo for a considerable period of time, has this week been awarded his black tag. I am reliably informed (and after some internet research) that this grade is the second highest achievable within this martial art. To achieve this Ethan had to learn and perform 8 different patterns. This is something that Ethan should be very proud of…and we are too!

Next this week were 3 of our youngest pupils in Nursery. Joseph impressed Miss Lucas and myself this week with his independent word creation using dice. He rolled them to create his own CVC words and record them…super work!

Also in Nursery, Ralph and William used their phonic knowledge to create CVC words that Miss Lucas had read to them. A brilliant start to their understanding of how to segment and blend words. Awesome job boys!

And finally this week was an award for Finley (R) for some more great work with phonics. He independently used his phonic knowledge to complete his instruction writing for making and egg and cress sandwich. Keep it up Finley!

I hope that you all have a lovely weekend and look forward to seeing everyone on Monday next week!

Friday 7th May

As the end of another busy week approaches, and as always we have been all systems go at Shephalbury Park. Myself and the rest of the senior leadership team have been visiting classes throughout the week to see how pupils are engaging with the lessons that they are participating in. It has been an absolute delight to see children really engaged and motivated in the wonderful lessons and opportunities that our staff are providing for them.

My assembly at the beginning of this week introduced the school to our third Shephalbury LEARNER attribute create. The assembly touched upon the importance of being creative and recognising that we could all be creative in our learning. I shared the book The Dot by Peter Reynolds, where Vashti doubts her ability as an artist. By the end of the book she has realised that a creative mind and outlook will see the positives in the things that we do, and shares this message with others who lack confidence.

Our children who attend Tea Pot have also been inspired by this story and our attribute of being creative. So much so, that they created their own display in the hall.

One of the key principles that underpins our values of being a Shephalbury LEARNER is that we need to approach our learning with a growth mindset- believing that we can learn from our mistakes, and not being afraid to make them. This is sometimes difficult for all of us, especially as we all want to do the best we can. However, it is important that we recognise mistakes and challenges as learning opportunities that strengthen our brains and deepen our learning.

If you would like to find out more to discuss further with your child, I would encourage you to have a watch of the assembly in the video resource centre by following the link below.

The children listed below have been nominated by their teachers for their creative approach to learning this week, a huge well done to each and every one of them:

Nursery: Melissa                                            Reception: Theo

Year 1: Ottilie                                                  Year 2: Sofia

Year 3: Noorisha                                            Year 4: Ruby

Year 5: Amelia J                                             Year 6: Crystal

Next week we will be focusing on developing our understanding of the next part of our LEARNER mnemonic, risk.

I would like to thank those people who have volunteered themselves to join our parent focus group. We will be meeting later in the half term, with a focus on current school developments.

The Hertfordshire Adult and Family Learning Service (HAFLS) are running some really useful and interesting courses and workshops in the local area on phonics, sewing and computing skills to name a few. Please see the information below if you would like to sign up.

N: Albert

R: Matthew

Y1: Emily

Y2: Bella

Y3: Viktor

Y4: Ella

Y5: Tommy

Y6: Noah St

This week I have handed out Headteacher’s Awards to 4 children, each of them for fantastic work in different areas of the curriculum and outside of the curriculum.

First up this week was someone who I know has had a really busy week. Not only has he received a Headteacher’s Award from me, but it has also been his birthday! Charlie (R) has been working really hard with Mrs Hart and Mrs Lee on securing his understanding of numbers, and being able to order them. This week he has mastered it and was extremely proud to show me his newfound confidence with this skill. Great work Charlie!

Next, and also in Reception, is Flynn, who this week used his child initiated learning time to practice his writing. He used his phonics to encourage people to put their rubbish in the bin. Well done Flynn…keep it up!

Our final two recipients come from Year 4, who have this week been developing their knowledge of play scripts. During their lessons they have been learning about the key features and how to utilise the stage directions and punctuation to perform the scripts to an audience. Lewis and Max both excelled in their performances and both looked like budding actors! Superb performance boys, well done!

Friday 30th April

Good afternoon and I hope that you are looking forward to the long weekend ahead. As always we have had a non-stop week around school, and we feel well and truly back into the swing of things!

You will see from the Headteacher Awards that have been handed out this week that many of our pupils are really embracing the opportunities that are being given to them in their learning. Children across the school are relishing the challenges that are being set for them and embracing our Shephalbury LEARNER principles.

Our LEARNER focus this week was solve, trying our best to overcome problems and come up with solutions in our work across the curriculum. Once again this concept was delivered through my Monday assembly, and pupils have been working hard in class to demonstrate it in their learning.

I have uploaded my assemblies relating to The Shephalbury LEARNER onto our video resource centre on the school website. I would encourage you to have a look at these to see how we are delivering the concepts to the children, and to support your child with embracing the concepts further.

Our attribute of solve this week has seen children nominated for their determination and drive to solve problems in their work in different areas of the curriculum. A huge well done to the following children:

Nursery: William                                Reception: Finley

Year 1: Lenny B                                  Year 2: Ethan

Year 3: Seth                                        Year 4: Kian T

Year 5: Teddy                                     Year 6: Natalia

Next week we will be focusing on developing our understanding of the next part of our LEARNER mnemonic, create.

I included information in my blog last relating to the holiday play scheme, run by Kid Fit, that will be in school during the May half term. I know that there have been quite a few bookings so far.

If you would be interested for your child to attend, you can find full information on our website by following the link below:

Before the Easter holidays I sent out a link requesting feedback of our provision during the most recent period of lockdown. Listening to all stakeholders is really important in any organisation, especially when planning for future development. It enables us to assess the effectiveness of the work that we have done and adapt as necessary when moving forward.

Below you can access a summary document of the feedback that was sent in to us. In total, we had responses for over 40% of the pupils that attend our school. A huge thank you to those people who took the time to share their thoughts and opinions with us, it is very much appreciated!

N: Isabelle

R: Skylar

Y1: Freddie

Y2: Mayson

Y3: George P

Y4: Skye

Y5: Ruby

Y6: Ronnie

This week I have handed out Headteacher’s Awards to 9 children, each of them for fantastic work in different areas of the curriculum and outside of the curriculum.

First up this week was someone who is developing some fantastic habits with her reading…Connie (R). She has diligently read to an adult at home on a daily basis throughout the year. This is a brilliant achievement and something to be proud of. Well done Connie…keep it up!

In Year 1 this week, their writing has been based on the story of The Snail and the Whale, by Julia Donaldson. A part of their work involved hot seating the characters, and Lilly has been given a Headteacher’s Award for her amazing acting skills when playing the part of the Snail in the hot seat. Well done Lilly, great work!

Our next recipient this week is in Year 2, William has been working incredibly hard this week, and demonstrated many of our Shephalbury LEARNER attributes. He has been recognised for his perseverance and determination with his maths. He has developed his understanding of partitioning for addition and is now utilising his knowledge independently. Super stuff William!

One member of Year 3 who has gone above and beyond this week is Nevaeh. She has really enjoyed the creative curriculum work that Year 3 have been doing on The Romans. She took out a book from our school library to do her own research, and produced a wonderful model of some Roman baths. This is another example of an excellent commitment to learning, and we are really proud of you Nevaeh!

Year 4 have also been learning about the Romans in their class, and have utilised the story of Romulus and Remus as the basis for their English work this week. Children have been challenged to rewrite the story in their own words, using high level vocabulary and description. Two children who really rose to the challenge and produced some great work were Summer and Dylan. It is clear how hard they worked on using the key features and remembering all of the basic structures that should accompany all of our work. Keep up the hard work guys!

Now into Year 5 where three members of the class have been acknowledged for their great work this week. Mrs Grizzell nominated Keeley and Katie for composing and performing their own piece in music (you can see the video below).

The final award went to Raynie who rose to the challenge of writing the perfect cinquain (a 5 line poem that describes a person, place or thing). You will see her poem below about a pine cone, something that she should be very proud of!

Friday 23rd April

Good afternoon and happy St George’s Day! As always, it has been another busy week here at Shephalbury Park, with lots of great learning taking place across the school. Children have been challenging themselves in their maths work, learning about explorers throughout the ages and continuing developing their musical knowledge in up older year groups.

Having visited all of our classes regularly during the week, it is clear how engaged our children are in their learning. They are applying themselves well in their learning and beginning to apply the attributes of the Shephalbury LEARNER to their work.

In my assembly on Monday this week, I introduced the idea of being a reflective learner. Looking at the mistakes that we make, learning from them, and then moving on.

This has been something that pupils have been working on in class this week, and our first batch of Shephalbury LEARNER awards goes to those children who have been reflective learners this week. Well done to the following children:

Nursery: Ayaaz                                  Reception: Lexie

Year 1: Vinnie                                     Year 2: Jude

Year 3: Kian                                        Year 4: Rhyder

Year 5: Lewis                                      Year 6: Jack

Nest week we will be focusing on developing our understanding of the next part of our LEARNER mnemonic, solve.

You may remember, back in October of last year we hosted a holiday play scheme run by Kid Fit. Those that attended had a really great time participating in a wide range of activities. Since notifying you earlier in the week that Kid Fit will be returning to offer a holiday play scheme during May half term, there has already been a lot of interest.

They will be running from Tuesday 1st June – Friday 4th June 10am-4pm. There is an online booking system, and they are able to accept childcare vouchers as payment. The play scheme is open to pupils from Nursery to Year 6. If you would like to find out more information or make a booking, please follow the link below to the Kid Fit page on our website.

Throughout the year we work with many different groups and outside agencies to support the work that we do with pupils, and their families. Last week in my blog I mentioned the work that we carry out with our School Family Worker. This week I would like to draw your attention to a free remote workshop that is available within our local area. The free session is designed to support parents who have children with anxiety.

‘This training is designed to give parent/carers the opportunity to explore and discuss the issues around anxiety in children and young people.

The aim of the session is to help develop a better understanding of feelings and the ways in which we can support children and young people to develop confidence and resilience.’

If you feel like this would benefit you and your family, please look at the document below for full booking information.

N: Ethan

R: Alys

Y1: Tommy

Y2: Ephraim

Y3: Phoebe

Y4: Zafran

Y5: Teddy

Y6: Konnor

This week I have handed out Headteacher’s Awards to 3 children, each of them for fantastic work in different areas of the curriculum and outside of the curriculum.

First up was Alex (Y4), who has been no stranger to Headteacher Awards this year. He has worked hard this week in his maths, developing his understanding and knowledge of division, so that he is now able to independently able to solve short division problems. Well done Alex…keep it up!

Next this week was Kyla D (Y1), who has been working really hard at using her phonological knowledge in her writing. She has independently applied this and we are really proud of her for doing so! Great work Kyla!

Someone else working hard at using their phonic knowledge in their writing is Rae (R). Not only did she do a fantastic job when writing individual words, she has improved and maintained a good standard of handwriting whilst doing so…fantastic work Rae!

The last recipient this week was Ronnie (Y6) who has used our Shephalbury LEARNER principle of the week of reflection in relation to his handwriting. Having looked at his previous work Ronnie identified that his handwriting needed some improving, and he has applied himself incredibly well this week to improve it in his work. A brilliant attitude Ronnie, well done!

Finally this week, I would like to make one last request for anyone who like to be a part of my parent focus group. This is a really valuable way for myself, governors and the leadership team to share ideas and get feedback from the perspective of parents. If you would like to, or would like to discuss what it would entail further please contact me directly through the school office or by email head@shephalburypark.herts.sch.uk

I hope that the sunshine stays around for another nice weekend!

Stay safe

Friday 16th April

Welcome back to the Summer term…and what a busy week we have had over the last 4 days! The buzz of learning is well and truly back in and around our classrooms, and children across the school are engaging in learning across the curriculum. From the music of Hans Zimmer in Year 6 to the story of Romulus and Remus in Year 4 and the fascination with our local fox in Year 2, there is lots of engaging and exciting learning happening in all year groups.

Our dedicated staff have been working hard in various circumstances over the course of the last year, none of which any of us could have imagined. They have all returned with a determination and drive to do the very best they can for all of our pupils, and this is clearly evident in every class. As a staff team we are excited to be back doing what we truly enjoy and fulfilling our roles as educators, the following quote sums this up perfectly for me:

The beginning of this week saw me introduce ‘The Shephalbury LEARNER’ to staff and pupils, through INSET and an assembly. The Shephalbury LEARNER is our personalised approach to growth mindset and positive learning attributes. Over time it is going to be threaded throughout the fabric of our school - our displays, classroom practices, approach to learning and much more. Below is an image that explains a bit more. We will be sending out further information regarding this in due course:

The Shephalbury LEARNER

Last term we set up an initiated The Store, our new community support initiative that is there to support families who may need a top up of food, and other items. The Store is open on Tuesdays and Thursdays before and after school, should you want/need to utilise this I would actively encourage you to do so. It is available on a help yourself basis, so please bring your own bag and top up with what you need.

Thank you to those people who have provided donations towards it so far. Your generosity is much appreciated at this time, and as we continue through this term we are hoping to also include good quality school clothes as well. If you would like more information please contact Mrs Dean through the school office or via email senco@shephalburypark.herts.sch.uk

Opening Times - Tuesday and Thursday from 8.40am – 9.15am and 3.00pm to 3.45pm

Location – Outside the Studio doors (Next to Early Years entrance)

Over the course of this year, we have developed a strong working relationship with Stevenage Educational Trust and worked closely with our School Family Worker Charlotte Hegarty. As a School Family Worker, Charlotte supports children and families with issues that arise both at school and in the home. Charlotte regularly visits school to work with individuals and groups of pupils, particularly support social and emotional needs. She is able to use her skills and expertise to support pupils and families at home, and signpost people to the additional groups and support that is available locally. Below is a range of courses that are available to support families who may need them. Please take the time to see if you and your family may benefit from any of them, if you feel that you would I would encourage you to sign up.

Now onto the celebrations for the week…I reprised my role of roving assembly presenter and made it successfully around school this morning to reward pupils for being Bucket Fillers and to recognise those who have been awarded Headteacher’s Awards. Bucket Fillers this week received a chocolate mini-roll!

A huge well done to the following children for being nominated by their teachers this week:

N: Oliver

R: Charlie

Y1: Eliannah

Y2: Billy-Joe

Y3: Olivia

Y4: Lewis

Y5: Amelia J

Y6: Natalia

This week I have handed out Headteacher’s Awards to 3 children, each of them for fantastic work in different areas of the curriculum and outside of the curriculum.

Firstly was a pupil who has made fantastic personal and academic progress this year, Alessia (Y4). Throughout the year she has grown in confidence with her work across the curriculum and is now demonstrating this clearly and independently in class. She has begun to verbally share her ideas and thinking around key concepts. Well done Alessia, we are really proud of you!

Next is one of our pupils in Reception…Charlie. Whilst walking around school during the week I saw that Charlie had drawn a dinosaur during his child initiated learning time. After I left the room, he turned his picture into a book and independently wrote about his stegosaurus. This was absolutely fantastic…keep it up Charlie!

And finally another Charlie, but this time in Year 1. Charlie has impressed both Miss Martin and myself with his commitment to maintain a daily diary during the holidays. He told me all about what he had done, and what he had enjoyed. What a fantastic way to keep practicing your writing whilst you were at home. Great work Charlie!

Before I sign off for the week I would just like to draw your attention to my request for parents and carers to join my parent focus group. This is a really valuable way for myself, governors and the leadership team to share ideas and get feedback from the perspective of parents. The commitment would initially be a meeting each half term, there will be a clear agenda and some discussion around pertinent school developments and priorities. Thank you to those that have volunteered already, but if you are interested I am looking for around another 5 people to join the group. If you are interested, or would like some more information, please contact me directly through the school office or by email head@shephalburypark.herts.sch.uk

And we close out this week with the sun in the sky, and hopefully some nice weather for the weekend. Please stay safe within the easing restrictions and I look forward to seeing everyone next week once I will have finally had a haircut!

Stay safe

Friday 26th March

Once again we have made it to the end of another term where we have a range of new experiences. Remote learning for most pupils for the majority of the term, followed by 3 weeks of face to face learning back in the classroom. I feel like I have said it many times over the past 12 months, but it really has been an unprecedented period of time for everyone, and our adaptations and modes of working have taken much time and effort to devise and embed. Through it all we have relied on the support of our community and the hard work of our staff to do the best that we can for the Shephalbury Park family.

Since arriving at Shephalbury Park 19 months ago, I have been astounded by the hard work and commitment of each and every member of staff. They all do their best for our pupils and families, and during such a difficult period of time for everyone this is truly commendable. I have said it regularly, but they are a great team and we should all be grateful of the roles that they play. Likewise, the engagement and support from you, our community, through this time has been brilliant. My quote for the week is a very simple one, that applies to all members of our community…

Since returning to school 3 weeks ago we have packed a lot in. We had a successful and engaging science week, an art project, Red Nose Day, lots of hard work and lots of time to re-engage with our friends.

Our community donations for our rainbow dress up day were £301.50. Thank you to everyone who donated to this worthy cause.

You will hopefully have seen the results of our art project, if you have dropped off or collected over the last couple of days. All of pupils have produced a self portrait, in a different colour from the rainbow. Children across the school have thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to be creative and engage in a sequence of learning to produce the results. For those that may not have seen it please seen the images below.

Today we held our annual Easter Egg Raffle. This year all pupils were provided with a raffle ticket, and therefore an equal chance of winning! We had over 60 eggs, rabbits, bars and assorted goodies donated by staff at school. Thank you to each of them for contributing. I drew the winners in assembly and you can see the winners below:

Now onto the celebrations for the week.

We had an additional celebration this week, a Lockdown Learners Tea Party (for children selected for their commitment to their remote learning during lockdown). Each teacher could have chosen many children from their class, however I invited 3 pupils form every class for a socially distanced treat this morning. Each of them showed a great commitment to their learning whilst at home, put in maximum effort and produced some great work. Well done to the following children:

A huge well done to the following children for being nominated by their teachers this week:

N: Katalea

R: Lexie

Y1: Joy

Y2: Bella

Y3: Phoebe

Y4: Emily

Y5: Amelia Q

Y6: Noah Sp

This week I have handed out Headteacher’s Awards to 4 children, each of them for fantastic work in different areas of the curriculum and outside of the curriculum.

Firstly were two of our Year 2 pupils, William and Richard. Both of them had worked hard to produce some brilliant self portraits with a blue wash. They had used their drawing skills and knowledge of tints and shades to produce some work that they should be very proud of. Well done boys…great work!

Next is another developing artist…Jessie (Y4) has also worked heard to develop her drawing skills to produce a brilliant self portrait. Throughout the last couple of weeks she has refined her image and improved it to create a fantastic likeness. Well done Jessie!

And finally was Finley Bryce (Y5) who was sent to me with his writing. He had worked really hard to plan and write an opening to his legend which created atmosphere for the rest of the piece. He had used the techniques that they had been taught and produced something to be proud of. Awesome work Finley!

That brings us to the end of another week and the term. Before I sign off I would just like to put a couple of reminders out to you all for next term:

  • All children need a freshly cleaned water bottle with them each day at school
  • Pupils will be allowed to continue to wear trainers to school (these must be black if you are buying a new pair)
  • After Easter we will be allowing pupils to bring bikes and scooters on site. If on a bike pupils must be wearing a helmet. Under no circumstances should they be ridden once on the school site. Pupils not adhering to these expectations will not be allowed to bring their bike or scooter to school.
  • We return to school on Tuesday 13th April 8.40am

I hope that you and your families enjoy the break over the next couple of weeks, and safely begin to enjoy some of the restriction easing as and when it happens.

Stay safe

Friday 19th March

What a colourful end to the week we have had, with everyone joining in with our rainbow themed dress up day in aid of Comic Relief. As I am sure you are all aware, Comic Relief supports projects in the UK and abroad that help others to free themselves from poverty. Since its inception in the 1980’s the charity has raised over £1billion for some very worthy causes. Thank you to those of you who donated to our collection via Gateway, there is still time to do so if you haven’t yet done it!

Our children have continued to settle well, and they are accessing their work well in their classes. We have furthered our rainbow theme, and begun an art project that will continue through next week as well. You will see later in my blog some of the fantastic art work that is being produced by pupils from across the school.

We will be holding our annual Easter raffle next Friday, but this year we will be providing each child in school with their own ticket. There is no need for tickets to be bought by parents and everyone will have an equal chance of winning. An enormous thank you to the staff team who have donated eggs and chocolate bars for the raffle.

Also next Friday we will be having our house point winners from last term receiving their reward…a non-uniform day for Griffin. Pupils in Griffin can come to school next Friday in their own clothes, providing that they are appropriate and suitable to be worn for school (no exposed skin or high heels).

Once again I would like to thank those of you who have taken the time to complete our parent survey regarding remote learning. If you would still like to complete it, the link was in the email sent today. We will share our findings with you in due course.

Now onto the celebrations for the week. Luckily I had my trainers on this week for assembly as I made my way around the school to recognise those pupils who have been Bucket Fillers and who have been awarded Headteacher’s Awards. Bucket Fillers this week received a chocolate mini-roll!

A huge well done to the following children for being nominated by their teachers this week:

N: William

R: Eric

Y1: Lenny B

Y2: Lilly

Y3: Laura

Y4: Alessia

Y5: Noah

Y6: Keira

This week I have handed out Headteacher’s Awards to 10 children, each of them for fantastic work in different areas of the curriculum and outside of the curriculum.

To begin the week two of our youngest pupils, Mason and Isabelle (Nursery) were rewarded for their amazing independent writing. It is clear how hard they have worked during their time at home as their writing has improved very much, and is now brilliant. A huge well done to both of you!

Someone else who has made great strides recently is Eddie (Reception), who since lockdown has been really enthusiastic about coming to school every day. He has been one of the first in and settled into class with a smile on his face on a daily basis. Well done Eddie, we are proud of you!

I have commented quite a bit on our art project across school, and our next 3 recipients have been awarded for their exceptional work in art.

In Year 4 Sophia and Max have really excelled in developing their drawing skills. They have been working on creating self portraits, understanding how to accurately measure and reproduce their key features on paper. The results have been amazing, as you will see below...brilliant work guys!

Someone else excelling in art this week is Amelia J (Y5). She has continually improved her drawing skills through the use of tutorials and it is really showing in the self portraits that she is producing. Brilliant work Amelia…well done!

Next this week are some mathematicians from Year 4. Summer, Ava and Alex all applied themselves fantastically well to their work on fractions, challenging themselves and working independently. An amazing attitude…well done!

And finally this week is Violet (Y1) who has impressed Miss Martin and myself with her attitude to learning and for getting all of her spellings right this week. We are really proud of you Violet, keep it up!

That brings us to the end of another week, and as I’m writing we have nice blue skies overhead. Here’s hoping that it stays like that for the weekend!

Friday 12th March

We have made it through our first week back, and I’m sure that your children are as tired as our staff having got back into the swing of things. Children have returned happily across the school and it has been lovely to have the beating heart back in the building.

Over the course of the week children have had time to reacquaint themselves with their friends, revisit some of the content that they covered during lockdown, participate in lots of Science experiments and generally get back into expectations that we set in all of their work. We are really pleased with their settling so far, and are looking forward to more rainbow themed activities through the next couple of weeks.

Our direction as a school is to ensure that we re-establish our expectations as quickly as we can, and understand what we need to cover in the summer term to best prepare everyone for the next stage in their education journey.

We recognised International Women’s Day on Monday this week through my assembly, and read the book ‘Girls Can Do Anything’. It is vitally important that as a school we recognise that in some aspects of life there is a fight for equality for women around the world. It is also important that we develop and encourage the future women of the world that we teach, to believe that they are able to achieve their dreams in life regardless.

This also leads into Mother’s Day this weekend. Our sense of family, I’m sure for many, has been at the forefront of our thoughts throughout our experiences of the last year. I hope that all of the mums, grandmas, nans and whatever other names you may be known as are spoilt this weekend.

Earlier this week I sent a link to a parent survey in relation to our school provision during lockdown. A huge thank you to those of you who have already completed it (nearly a third of pupils), if you haven’t yet, I would really appreciate if you could. It should only take a few minutes and will give us a chance to properly review our actions and decisions. The link is in the email sent to all parents this afternoon. Many thanks in advance.

Last week I introduced our new school community facility ‘The Store’. It has been up and running this week and is a place where, if needed, you are able to supplement your store cupboards at home with additional items if you need them. There is a variety of tins, jars, dried goods and other non-perishable items available.

The Store

Opening Times - Tuesday and Thursday from 8.40am – 9.15am and 3.00pm to 3.45pm

Location – Outside the Studio doors (Next to Early Years entrance)

If you are in a position to support our initiative and would like to contribute, to help keep our store stocked, then please provide non-perishable items in the playground box marked The Store. Items could include Tins, Pasta, Pasta sauce, Rice, Tea, Coffee, Cereal and anything else with a long shelf life. We are also hoping to provide items such as toiletries, baby wipes and washing up liquid.

Now our celebrations from the first week back! I have resumed my ‘Challenge Anneka’ style Friday assembly, setting off around the school and visiting each class (at a safe distance!). We have re-established our focus on ‘Bucket Fillers’ around the school and which recognises pupils showing good citizenship and displaying positive learning behaviour. Our winners in each class was awarded a delicious Jaffa Cake Bar!

A huge well done to the following children for being nominated by their teachers this week:

N: Felicity

R: Charlie

Y1: Emma

Y2: Jude

Y3: Melody

Y4: Reagan

Y5: Liam G

Y6: Angelika

This week I handed out Headteacher’s Awards to 5 children, each of them for fantastic work in different areas of the curriculum and outside of the curriculum.

First was for Freddie (Y1) who has worked incredibly hard throughout his period of remote learning and returned to school with a fantastic attitude to his work. He came to read me his non-chronological report about the dragon that he had created. He had used some brilliant language and rightly deserves his award. Great work Freddie!

Another member of Year 1 who is recognised for some of their remote learning is Liam. He spent a few days creating and recording his own science investigations during lockdown. It was fantastic to see his enthusiasm throughout his work…keep it up Liam!

The third recipient this week was Joe (Y4), who has developed a love and skill for the paper folding art of origami. Now this is not your average paper plane making! Joe has spent an incredible amount of time refining his skills and creating some amazing models. He has also featured in a video by one of his favourite Youtuber’s, Fearless Flourish, in an unboxing video. Seeing the detail and skill that goes into each of the models is a fascinating. If you would like to have a look at some of the models please see the video below. Super work Joe, well done!

I GOT SENT SO MANY AWESOME ORIGAMI MODELS!!! - Origami Unboxing #5

Finally are two of our oldest pupils Noah Steadman and Dennis (Y6), who have both returned to school with a fantastic attitude to learning. They have created a brilliant relationship as learning partners, and it is really showing in their application and quality of their work. Both boys were really proud of their achievement, and rightly so…keep it up!

And that brings me to the end of my blog for the first week back. Once again it has been great to see everyone returning to school. I hope that you safely enjoy the weekend and look forward to seeing you all next week.

Friday 5th March

I know that we have all made it through to this point with a lot of hard work, tears, tantrums, highs and lows, but the end is in sight for remote learning (hopefully for the foreseeable future!). I have said it many times throughout this term but I am in awe of everyone that has adapted their day to day to support their children, maintain their job and stay on top, as much as possible, of things in their homes.

Over the weeks I have spent much time reflecting on the many positives that we have seen during this period of lockdown. However today I feel that it is important to look forward, and consider the opportunities that our wider re-opening will offer our children and families. We are all really excited to be welcoming our pupils back to school and have spent much time planning for the next few weeks.

We will be spending time re-connecting with each other, re-establishing good quality social interactions, embedding our high expectations in the classroom, assessing the direction that our curriculum needs to take, having fun and above all engaging in exciting learning opportunities.

Our curriculum until the end of term will be based around rainbows and the book ‘We Made a Rainbow’ by Michelle Robinson. It is based upon recognising some of the restrictions that we have all lived with over recent times, but to remember that at the end of a storm there is a rainbow waiting for us and we all have each other. I read it to everyone in assembly today, and I feel that it is very apt for our current position. Our Science week, English and art project will be centred on this book, and will culminate in an outdoor art gallery and some independent writing.

You should have received a letter via email this week reminding you all of the expectations, routines and procedures in and around school for our return. I implore you to please make sensible and positive choices at times that your children are not at school. This will enable us to best protect our community at school, and minimise the risk to any further disruptions to pupils learning in school. If you didn’t receive the letter you can download a copy below.

You may also have seen government information that families with children of primary school age are eligible for twice weekly rapid testing, if you are symptom free. This is the case and should you wish to access these with your children you can find out more information by clicking the link below.

I have seen much of the art that pupils have produced this week as a part of the project set by Mrs Cropley. It has been brilliant to see how pupils of all ages have taken their time and focused on the individual details of the different stages of their drawings. Please ensure that these are sent into school next week so that we can display some around the school.

I would like to introduce to everyone our new school community facility ‘The Store’. This is a place where you are able to supplement your store cupboards at home with additional items if you need them. There is a variety of tins, jars, dried goods and other non-perishable items available.

If you would like to access this initiative, then please feel free to do so at the following times:

Opening Times - Tuesday and Thursday from 8.40am – 9.15am and 3.00pm to 3.45pm

Location – Outside the Studio doors (Next to Early Years entrance)

If you are able to contribute, to help keep our store stocked, then please provide non-perishable items in the playground box marked The Store. Items could include Tins, Pasta, Pasta sauce, Rice, Tea, Coffee, Cereal and anything else with a long shelf life. We are also hoping to provide items such as toiletries, baby wipes and washing up liquid.

We will be looking to expand The Store to provide other essential items over the coming weeks and months, such as clothing and books. Please keep an eye out for updates in future blogs and newsletters.

Now onto our final set of remote celebrations. Many pupils have worked incredibly hard over recent weeks and we are proud of all of them. I will be having a ‘Lockdown Learners’ picnic in the next couple of weeks for some pupils from every class who have consistently applied themselves as well as they could during their time at home.

In our assembly I announced the following Stars of the Week, chosen by their teachers for engaging consistently well, contributing to group sessions and producing some fantastic work:

N: Ashton

R: Ethan

Y1: Olivia

Y2: Roma

Y3: George P

Y4: Jayden

Y5: Isabel

Y6: Lily

Critical Worker Groups: Tommy (Y1)

This week I handed out Headteacher’s Awards to 5 different children, each of them for fantastic work in different areas of the curriculum.

First was for Joy (Y1) who has been working hard all the way through this term. She has been a part of our Critical Worker bubble at school, but has furthered her learning at home and created her own fantastic maths book. Well done Joy, we are proud of you!

The next recipient is someone who has worked incredibly hard every day and consistently gone above and beyond the expectations that his teachers have set him. Spencer C (Y2) has been an exemplary model for Mrs Lewis and Mrs Oustayiannis since January and he deserves his Headteacher’s Award very much. Well done Spencer!

Another member of Year 2 who has worked in credibly hard this week is Mayson. He has persevered with Numbots since being at home, and this is enabling him to move through the levels and be proud of his achievements. Great work Mayson I am really pleased with how determined you have been!

Max (Y1) has been awarded his award for his reading and phonics work over recent weeks. Miss Martin has been incredibly impressed, as am I, with Max’s phonics work in his group sessions and the fact that he has read all of the books allocated to him online. Great work Max!

And finally there is an award for Maisie in Nursery for her excellent work in phonics lessons with Miss Lucas. Great work Maisie!

The next time I write a blog we will have had a week back in school with everyone, safely, back together! We are all looking forward to the next few weeks, but also need to mindful that we take care and protect our community as much as we can by adhering to the expectations that we set out.

Thank you for your support of the school through what has undoubtedly been a tough time for everyone. I look forward to seeing you all on Monday morning.

Stay safe

Friday 26th February

The end of our first week back and there is some light on the horizon for our pupils, with a full return to school coming on March 8th. I hope that you have taken the time to read my letter from earlier in the week so that you understand the adaptations that we are making to our remote learning next week. This will enable our teachers enough time to fully prepare for the weeks ahead!

The art project, set by Mrs Cropley, is there for pupils in all year groups. We would like to see as many of these as possible when we return, so please encourage your children to take care and present them as best they can.

Even though we now know that pupils are returning in just over a week, it is vitally important that you support us in keeping them engaged in their remote learning next week. This will ensure that they return to school better prepared and enable us to get back into the swing of things as swiftly as possible.

As I said in my letter, we will be returning with the same routines and procedures that we had in the Autumn Term. Our curriculum will focus heavily on instilling our high expectations and non-negotiables in the core subjects of maths and English, whilst giving pupils plenty of opportunity to re-establish their good quality social interactions with their peers. We will be taking regular exercise and providing an enriching afternoon curriculum with Science Week and a whole school art project.

The story I read in my assembly today was Ruby's Worry, now we all appreciate that although we are excited about returning to school that there will be pupils who are nervous or anxious about returning. If you know that this is the case for your child, please encourage your child to talk about it and contact your child’s class teacher through their class email address should you need to.

Keep an eye out next week for a reminder of our daily routine and expectations.

Now onto our celebrations for the week, and once again I have surprised some children at home this week with Headteacher’s Awards.

In our assembly I announced the following Stars of the Week, chosen by their teachers for engaging well, produced some fantastic work and supported others when they have needed it:

N: Isabelle

R: Alys

Y1: Liam

Y2: Richard

Y3: Jamila

Y4: Ethan M

Y5: Ellis

Y6: Livvy

Critical Worker Groups: Alessia, Ephraim

This week I handed out Headteacher’s Awards to 8 different children, each of them for fantastic work in different areas of the curriculum.

First was Ethan (Y2) for the fable that he wrote before the half term Holidays. Both Mrs Oustayiannis and Mrs Lewis were really impressed with the effort and hard work that had gone into creating such a fantastic piece of writing. Super work Ethan well done!

The next recipient of a Headteacher's award was also in year 2, Ali-May received her award for persevering with her skipping and developing that skill over the last six weeks and for her use of similes this week in her English work. We are really proud of the hard work that you have put into this Ali-May well done keep it up!

Also, this week I handed out headteacher's awards to three members of the same family. Nevaeh, Molly and Sophie Griffiths all carried out some random acts of kindness this week for frontline workers in our community. They delivered notes and Flowers to a range of people who have supported our community throughout this pandemic as a show of gratitude which I feel is much needed and has put a smile on people’s faces. Thank you for being so kind and generous, you truly deserve a Headteacher's award each.

Emily (Y1) has been working really hard in her English work this week, creating and describing her own dragon. Her creation and writing were very imaginative and well thought out. Well done Emily!

Finally, this week are some Headteacher awards for 2 pupils in Year 4. Both Lewis and Ella have consistently impressed Mrs Cropley and I with their constant commitment to their learning since January. They have contributed to class discussions, and always put in maximum effort in all of their work. Well done…we are really proud of you!

Friday 12th February

We made it…we have reached the end of half term and what a way to celebrate with our pyjama party! A massive thank you to DJ Krust for putting on such a great time for us all.

I want to start by saying how amazing all of our community has been through the last 6 weeks. You have been juggling children, work, remote learning, dogs, cats and everything else that life can throw at you. I say this as a parent myself, it hasn’t been easy for anyone! I’m sure that your houses have been like mine with tears, laughs, tantrums, hugs and fun, but through it all we have done our best to make the most of this situation.

I want you to know how brilliantly you are all doing at home. I am lucky enough to be able to see across our entire remote learning platform, and what I see are children who are learning well, listening to their teachers and sending in some fantastic work. I see parents interacting brilliantly, whilst juggling their own pressures, and I am incredibly proud to be leading this community. I want to give a Headteacher’s Award to each and every parent who has done a fantastic job at managing all of these things over the last 6 weeks. Unfortunately I couldn’t get around to all of you to give you your sticker, but you can print your own from the image below should you want to!

As a school we need to demonstrate that we are meeting our statutory responsibility in delivering a high quality remote offer, with specified amounts of learning. I know that some have felt overwhelmed by this. I know from speaking to many of you that for most of our parents the learning has been spot on, but for some it may be too much or too little. Some children have needed more support, and others have worked independently quite happily. There is no one size fits all solution, and you can only do what you can do. If you can get through with children who are warm, cared for, have food in their bellies and feel loved then you have done a great job!

On days where someone calls or emails you because your child hasn’t got online or submitted some work, please don’t feel like you are being judged. We are doing so to check that you are all ok, and to see if there is any way in which we can help or support you and your children.

As it stands I still have no further indications as to when a ‘school return’ might take place, or in what context we will be returning. The government have previously stated an aim to target March 8th at the earliest to begin opening up to increased amounts of pupils. Whether this will still happen, is likely to be announced in the week following half term.

With this in mind our plan is to continue to provide our provision in the same manner that we have been for the last half term, for the first 2 weeks of next half term at least, until we have clarity on the wider situation. Depending on the implications of any further announcements our provision may have to be adapted and run in a different way, but please be assured that we will keep you updated as soon as any decisions are made.

Like I regularly do, I want to pay tribute to our incredible staff for their work over the last 6 weeks. Despite their roles and manner of working having to change at short notice, they have all done their utmost to make sure that they are providing the best that they can for the children of Shephalbury Park. Whether they are supporting children at school, or at home juggling family life and delivering full days of learning to their classes, their commitment to this community is highly commendable and much valued by many.

This week has seen everyone take part in Feeling Good Week activities at home. I have seen some fantastic examples of what has been going on, including art work, baking and different physical activities. I hope that these have put a smile on your faces and made everyone in your home feel good. If you haven’t already done so, please send in some pictures of what you have been doing to you teachers so that they can share what has been going on in your classes.

This week is the last week of our official skipping challenge, and I have to say how delighted I am for the impact that it has had for many of our children. Like me, I see many of them determined to improve, keeping active and learning a new skill. I really hope that you continue to encourage your children to keep on skipping as a form of exercise and to support their mental well being. We will be using these skills during sports week later in the year!

Below is the last video for the challenge…I am sure that if you look back through my blogs, you will see the progress that everyone has made! After half term we will be starting a new challenge, which you receive more information about once we return.

This week I handed out Headteacher’s Awards to a range of children across the school. First of all was McKenzie (Y1) for her amazing commitment to absolutely everything thast she has done over the last 6 weeks. Miss Martin and I have been so impressed by the quality and quantity of work that she has produced, as well as being delighted to see the progress she continues to make. Well done McKenzie!

Next is a couple of our youngest pupils, Ethan and Alfie (N). Now I know that these two are best friends, and this week it seems as though they have a telepathic connection as they have both been making great progress with their phonics. Miss Lucas sent me some photos and videos of what you have been doing and it is fantastic…well done boys!

Now in Year 4 this week there has been much fun and excitement with their English unit on performance poetry. And it would seem that we may have a couple of Michael Rosen or Benjamin Zephaniah’s in our midst! Both Joe and Alex have performed some incredible poems that you can see below. Amazing work boys, well done!

Also in Year 4 Hannah and Ethan P have been awarded Headteacher awards for their continual high levels of engagement and commitment to all of their work this half term. Great work guys!

And finally this half term it is 2 of our oldest pupils, Noah Spiller and Angelika (Y6) for some well written and highly informative biographies this week. They had both utilised the skills that they had learnt throughout their English unit and presented them really well. Some great work to be proud of!

A huge congratulations to Year 5 for winning our Battle of the Classes!

Our governors play an active role within our school and make regular contact and visits throughout the year. Please see below for a letter from our Chari of Governors, Cameron Smith:

As well as today being the end of this half term, it also marks the start of maternity leave for Mrs Oustayiannis. She is expecting a little girl in the next few weeks, and I’m sure that you will join me in wishing her every luck and happiness we look forward to hearing her good news in the coming weeks. For the remainder of this academic year 2 will be led full time by Mrs Lewis.

As ever thank you for your support, I hope that you all enjoy a break next week and I look forward to seeing many of you back online on Monday 22nd February!

Friday 5th February

As we come to the end of our first week of February I have had some time to reflect on the sad news of the passing of Captain Sir Tom Moore earlier this week. In what has been an incredibly difficult year for many of us, Captain Tom’s story, and life, have become an inspiration to people old and young across the country. He has been the epitome of positivity and optimism for many months, and his fundraising work has raised nearly £33 million in less than a year. He is someone who will be remembered as a beacon of light during tough times and I feel that it is only right that this week’s quote is one of his.

“We will get through it in the end but it might take time, at the end of the day we shall all be ok again…for all those finding it difficult: the sun will shine on you again and the clouds will go away” Captain Sir Tom Moore.

It was great to see so many superheroes and princesses at this week’s assembly. If you attended our assembly this week, you will have heard me announce the theme (and special treat) that we have lined up for next week. To round off ‘Feeling Good Week’ we will be holding a virtual pyjama party at 2pm before our assembly. So make sure you are wearing your favourite PJ’s or onesie and be prepared to sing along and dance to the sounds of DJ Krust in your living rooms!

As mentioned above, next week is our Feeling Good Week across the school. This is a chance for us all to take part in some activities together to make us be happy, healthy and feel good about ourselves and our families. Our staff have put together a timetable of activities and ideas that you can try at home during the afternoons next week. Below you will also find lots of ideas, activities and links to a whole raft of different things.

Some classes might have activities that your teachers would like you to try, these will be shared in the normal way on Teams. For others feel free to dip in and out of our different suggestions every day. Remember that the activities should be fun, enjoyable and be shared with your families.

Please take the time to read the timetable and information below to share with your children and find activities that you can all do together. Please send pictures, videos and anything else that you do next week to your class teachers so that we can showcase it all for everyone on my blog after half term.

Last weekend I know that many of you took part in the Big Garden Birdwatch. I have seen pictures of people creating bird tables and feeders, and then patiently waiting for their garden visitors. You will see in the photos below that we had a nice variety of birds, including a sparrowhawk! Well done to everyone who took part, I hope that you enjoyed looking out for the birds as I did at my house.

As we approach the final week of our skipping challenge it has been great to hera from many of you how enthusiastic you have been to get out, stay fit and try some new tricks. Mia has been checking my blog and continues to be super impressed with the progress that you are making…well done!

This week’s video sees some of the tricks that Mia showed us last week, keep trying them throughout the next week and we will have our last skipping video on next week’s blog.

This week I handed out Headteacher’s Awards to 5 different children, each of them for fantastic work in different areas of the curriculum. First of all was Molly (Y1) for the fantastic improvements that she has made with her writing recently. I have seen some of the work that she has produced at home, and she has been working really hard. Super work Molly…well done!

Next is another member of the Griffiths household…Nevaeh has been working incredibly hard in supporting the Year 3 effort in their TTRS battle this week with Year 5. She was a top contributor in her class and her award is rightly deserved. Great work!

Also scoring highly and contributing to their class total was Teddy (Y5). He played over 200 games in the last week. Amazing effort!

Someone who has been working extremely hard on their writing this week was Seth (Y3) who has re-written his own version of Rapunzel set in space. My particular favourite part was the halloumi moon cheese which featured in the story! Well done Seth!

Friday 29th January

Once again we reach the end of the week with the prospect of some colder weather over the weekend. I know that the snow last weekend provided some respite and excitement for many of us. I am sure that many of you enjoyed snowball fights, built snowmen and went sledging.

Throughout the week Mrs Cropley, Mrs Dean and I have once again visited many of you to deliver some fresh exercise books for our pupils. It has been lovely to see you all and catch up on how you are getting on. If you haven’t yet got your new books they will be with you at the beginning of next week.

Hopefully you will have received and read my letter this week regarding the developments in our remote learning offer from next week. Please ensure that you check if your child has been invited to a support or stretch session with their teacher. These are going to be a great way for us to facilitate some small group work with teachers. The groupings are fluid and may change from week to week as the focus of the sessions changes, you will be notified by Friday of each week if your child is invited for the following week.

We have also added a live Q & A session into each day for Years 1-6, between 11.30-12pm. This is a chance for pupils to clarify work, check their understanding, or for them to gain some extra motivation from their teacher. Please encourage your child to use this time should they need to.

With the shift to remote learning, and our children spending an increased amount of time at home, there is no doubt a vast increase in the amount of time that our children are spending online. It is vital that we are aware of any potential issues that may arise, and stay up to speed on best practice whilst online to keep our children safe. There is information available on the online safety page of the website. Below is the Spring eSafety newsletter from Herts for Learning, where you will find some important information about Tik Tok and other useful information:

We also appreciate that with us spending more time in closer contact to our close family, tensions and frustrations for our children, and ourselves, may manifest themselves in different ways. This is perfectly normal at a time like this, however there is support available if things are becoming more difficult. Below is a document which details some online parent workshops on a variety of topic areas (positive behaviour, anxiety, anger, challenging behaviour) which you may wish to access.

This weekend marks the RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch, and I have already been sent some photos of the visitors in some people’s gardens. I would encourage you to take some time (an hour) to sit and have a look out of your window/door to see the birds that visit your garden or local area. I have uploaded a copy of the bird identifier below. If you are able to get some good snaps of any of the birds I would love to see them, and will make a presentation to put onto blog next week of your bird watching experiences!

We will all now have heard the news regarding the earliest possible potential opening for schools, as announced by Boris Johnson this week. This will have filled us with mixed thoughts and feelings regarding the coming weeks, and the quote that I have chosen this week summarises my thoughts in relation to this.

Thank you to everyone for joining me in our hat assembly this afternoon, it was great to see you all looking resplendent in your homes! Our theme assembly will continue next week with a Super Hero and Princess assembly…so dust off your capes and tiaras and get dressed up next week.

Next week marks Children’s Mental Health Week, you can access some ideas and activities by following the link to the website. Your class teachers may include some activities next week, however we will be having our own ‘Felling Good Week’ in the final week of this half term (8th Feb – 12th Feb) which will be filled with ideas and activities to support everyone’s mental and physical wellbeing.

Once again your skipping progress this week has been brilliant…please keep it up! We were also treated in assembly to a special message from Mia, who inspired our skipping journey in the first place.

Over the next couple of weeks let’s all see if we can master the tricks that Mia has shown us and get those videos sent in for us all to see. See the video below for this week’s skipping highlights!

Friday 22nd January

The end of our 3rd week of remote learning and I am really proud at how we have all approached it so far. We are now half way through this half term, and on the whole people have found routines and methods of working that fit into their lives.

I am in regular contact with many families, and completely understand the differing circumstances that we are all living with. Like all of you I have the same struggles with finding the balance of work, home schooling, quality family time and a bit of time to yourself! Our children will have tears and tantrums, highs and lows, but please remember that you are not alone.

As I have maintained throughout the periods in which we have been at home in the past, it is ok to take a break from the learning as you see fit, play a game, watch some TV, get some fresh air and skip!

Maintaining positive relationships in the home is more important now than ever with the amount of time that we are spending with each other. We all miss the ‘normalities’ of what life used to hold, and in time these will return, however for now we need to remember to celebrate small wins and value normal things; a bedtime story, a movie together or a shared meal.

Don’t feel pressured by what others are doing, or how they are coping with their own situation. Remember that working out what is right for you and your family is the most important thing right now, and will continue to be so over the coming weeks.

Throughout the week I have dropped into morning meetings, story time and afternoon meet ups. As always our pupils are engaged, eager to learn and keen to socialise. The work that I have the pleasure of seeing is of a good quality, a testament to the support that they are being provided from school and home.

Each week so far we have had over 150 different accounts accessing our Friday Celebration Assembly. This is undoubtedly my favourite part of the week, seeing so many happy faces and recognising pupils’ achievements. I am glad to be able to share it with all of you. From next week I thought that I would add a bit more fun into the mix…I would like everyone who is attending the assembly to wear a hat!

Throughout the week I have received skipping updates from many of you (over 75 photos and videos). I am so pleased that so many of you are putting the effort into learning or developing your skipping skills and also keeping active and healthy. I am out skipping everyday with my children and we are having so much fun learning and improving. Keep it up next week and don’t forget to send me your updates head@shephalburypark.herts.sch.uk!

Now onto our celebrations for the week, I miss not being able to hand all of these out in person, however I was able to deliver my Headteacher’s Awards for the week.

In our assembly I announced the following Stars of the Week, chosen by their teachers for engaging well, produced some fantastic work and supported others when they have needed it:

N: Mason

R: Connie

Y1: McKenzie

Y2: Tyler

Y3: Nevaeh

Y4: Ethan M

Y5: Isabel

Y6: Holly

Critical Worker Groups:

Elijah, Lexie, Emily

This week I handed out Headteacher’s Awards to 5 different children, each of them for exceptional work in different areas of the curriculum. Olivia (Y1) was awarded hers for some incredible independent instructional writing of making butterfly cakes. Well done!

Spencer C (Y2) has been committed to all aspects of his learning over the last few weeks, but has really impressed with his maths work on multiplication this week. Keep it up!

Another two Year 2 recipients this week were Roma and Bella for their brilliantly written stories. They both used lots of the features that they had learnt, and used some wonderful detail. Great work!

Freddie (Y1) has also been working hard on his writing this week. He applied his phonic knowledge in a range of work. Fantastic!

Finally, this week is Sophia (Y4) who has been indulging her passion for art whilst at home. Every day she creates something new, and her designs have really brightened up my day. Well done Sophia!

Friday 15th January

We have arrived at the end of our second week of remote learning, and I have to say how impressed your teachers and I have been so far. The effort and commitment that many of you are showing each and every day is fantastic! We all know how tough it can be to concentrate at home and manage the learning with everything else that is happening around us, however it is really important that we stick to it and do our best.

As always, if you are finding something tricky, or need a bit more support our teachers are available online everyday between 8.45am and 3.30pm. Contact them via the normal channels and they will be able to guide children and adults in making sure everyone is accessing their learning appropriately.

As a staff team we are reviewing our online provision on a weekly basis, and will be adapting and improving it as we go. We too are learning the best way to adapt our way of facilitating the curriculum and tailoring it to the needs of pupils online. I am proud of what is happening so far, but as with everything we will adapt and improve as we go. I have appreciated the feedback that we have had so far, and will send out a link to a survey in the coming weeks to gain some more insights into our provision from both pupil and parent points of view.

If you are still having technical problems, or are suffering from a lack of access at home, please do contact me so that we are able to discuss ways of supporting you.

Over the course of this week I have visited nearly every single family to drop off your skipping ropes, so that no-one has any excuses not to participate in our skipping challenge. It was great to see so many of you and have a quick chat, as well as keeping my step count up for the week (over 30,000 steps on Monday alone!).

Now as I outlined in my assembly last week, we are all at very different stages of our skipping journey. This week has been a good chance to find out where you are starting from. Please make some time every day to let your child/ren practice skipping or, once they have mastered a basic skip, learn some tricks. It is a fantastic exercise and will also develop children’s motor skills and co-ordination!

Thank you to everyone who has sent in a photo or short clip of themselves skipping this week, you are all included in the video below. Please send me your clips every week so that we can see your improvements (head@shephalburypark.herts.sch.uk) Enjoy the video:

Skipping Challenge Week 1

I know for many of us at home, children especially, one of the key parts of not coming to school is missing out on seeing their friends. I know that some of our classes have been trialling lunch time socials through Teams on video and chat, and this is giving them some much needed social contact. I know that many of you may have already been creative in putting in some other virtual social opportunities, but here are some suggestions that might work for you:

  1. Virtual story time with friends or family, read your favourite story to your friends or family
  2. Quiz, each child writes a few questions to ask their friends
  3. Virtual dinner party, all have the same meal and chat via video call whilst eating
  4. Virtual cook-a-long, arrange to cook or make something together at the same time as video calling

Next week, Monday 18th, marks Winnie the Pooh day (celebrated on the birthday of A A Milne), and I feel that the image and quote below sums up many of our feelings in regards to our friends currently.

Now onto our celebrations for the week…once again our assembly this afternoon was really well attended, thanks for coming!

In our assembly I announced the following Stars of the Week, chosen by their teachers for engaging well with their work and supporting others when they have needed it:

N: Alfie

R: Imogen

Y1: Molly

Y2: Spencer C

Y3: Rylan

Y4: Ella

Y5: Tommy

Y6: Michael

Critical Worker Groups:

Kian, Konnor

There was also a Headteacher’s Award announced in assembly for Amelia (Y3) for really developing her independence with her home learning and daily routines at home. As well as for helping out mum when she got into a sticky situation in the mud during the week. Well done Amelia, I am really proud of you!

Also working hard this week with their Numbots and Times Table Rock Stars are the children featured in the videos below:

Those that joined assembly will have also heard me promote participation in the RSPB’s Big Garden Birdwatch over the weekend of 29th – 31st January. It is a great way to connect with the wildlife around us and take some time to appreciate our local birds. If you would like to join in at home, or for more information please follow this link: https://www.rspb.org.uk/get-involved/activities/birdwatch/

I look forward to seeing your skipping updates, and will be dropping into some of the daily sessions with teachers next week.

Friday 8th January

Well what a start to 2021 we have had! First of all I would like to pay enormous credit to all of our staff for working incredibly hard in establishing remote learning and our on-site provision. This has really been an immense task, working with new technology and increased stresses.

We had planned extensively for remote learning, but as with everything until you have a chance to put it into practice you are never quite sure how it will work. With this in mind I would like to praise the perseverance and resilience of those of you at home in getting set up and your children engaged with their classes and their learning. Over the course of this week we have seen almost our entire pupil body online at registration sessions, story time, and in completing their tasks.

Pupils have embraced the new technology and methods of accessing their learning well. Now we all appreciate that our personal and home circumstances are very different currently, but the feedback coming from staff is that they are impressed with what they are getting back from all pupils.

It is important to remember that despite our desire for our children to be focussed and model pupils, we all need to recognise that learning at home is inevitably going to be different from being at school. We all know that the way that children respond to their parents and home environment is very different to the way the respond to a teacher (I know this only too well from personal experience!). Please do not feel stressed or worried if your child isn’t always as focused in their learning as you want them to be. Tailor your day and expectations to what suits you and your child best.

As we saw once all pupils returned in September, we will work hard to fill any gaps in learning and ensure that pupils continue to get the high quality, fully rounded education that we are able to provide them at school. If they don’t get everything done every day it doesn’t matter, if they need to take a break or play for a while please let them do this. We all have enough stressors in our lives at the moment, and we want to keep pupils engaged fully in their learning. Our teachers have worked hard to produce lessons that are accessible and appropriate for home and want all pupils to be successful. They too have felt the stresses of working from home with their children whilst also supporting yours.

We know that the next six weeks are going to be challenging for us all, but our priority is to ensure that pupils are engaging on a daily basis, safe, happy and trying their best with the work that is set. We will of course, as always, be here every step of the way to support, motivate and encourage you and your children to achieve this!

I have been very taken recently with the book by Charlie Macksey, The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse, and included an image in one of my previous correspondences. I feel that the image below is quite apt for the current situation.

Our last school closure saw me enter the world of vlogging for the first time, but his time around I have taken the decision to invite our entire community to a celebration assembly every Friday at 2.30pm. Thank you to everyone who joined us today!

In our assembly I announced the following Stars of the Week, chosen by their teachers for engaging well with their work and supporting others when they have needed it:

N: Isla

R: Henry F

Y1: Leo

Y2: Mayson

Y3: Caleb

Y4: Joe

Y5: Ruby

Y6: Elliot

Critical Worker Groups:

Violet, Bella, Natalia

Those that joined will have also heard about the new challenge that I have set for everyone over the next 6 weeks…to learn to skip and learn some tricks if you can. I have been inspired recently by some videos online and feel that this is a really good way for us all to be able to keep fit, learn something new and develop our perseverance at home.

Each child will receive a skipping rope over the next week, if you already have one then you will be getting a slight head start!

I will be doing a weekly update of my own progress, along with that of pupils and staff. If you would like to be included in this please send your clips or photos to head@shephalburypark.herts.sch.uk before Thursday lunchtime each week.

Thank you for your support this week, it is very much appreciated!

Friday 18th December

Well, what a year it has been? I know that for many of us, quite possibly the most difficult of our lifetime, however as a community we should be proud of how we have collectively approached the challenges in our way head on. Our pupils remain in school, engaged in learning, happy and polite. Our wider community has supported us when we have needed them to, and also when we have had to make difficult decisions that have adapted the way that we run our school.

"The greatness of a community is most accurately measured by the compassionate actions of its members." – Coretta Scott King

Our school has continued to grow in strength throughout this year, despite the bumps in the road. We have developed our curriculum, invested heavily in learning resources (books and laptops) and successfully reintegrated all pupils into the new daily norms around school. This is a testament to the committed and skilled staff team that we have, something that we should all be grateful for.

This week has been full of Christmas activities around school. At the time of writing this our Christmas production has been viewed nearly 500 times, the buzz around school on Tuesday afternoon during the premiere was fantastic. This truly is something that we should all be proud of. Christmas lunch was delicious and enjoyed by everybody, our discos saw some fab dance moves and we have all thoroughly enjoyed getting involved with the Christmas pantomime in our classes this morning!

You will find lots of additional information about other happenings around the school in our December newsletter that has been sent via email, and can also been downloaded just below. There is some important information in the newsletter regarding the reporting of any positive COVID cases over the holidays. Please take the time to read it carefully.

And now for the final time in 2020 our weekly awards…there are a few more this week. On top of our weekly Bucket Filler award and Headteacher’s awards, we also awarded our termly Presentation Prince and Princess awards, for children who consistently present their work to the very highest standard.

This week’s tour of the school was assisted by a lucky helper from year 6 and all of the winners were rewarded with their certificate and a cake bar, which this week were Christmas themed cake bars:

N- Ralph     R- Darcey    Y1- Emma     Y2- Richard    Y3- Viktor     Y4- Ethan P    Y5- Teddy    Y6- Olivia

Presentation Princes and Princes this term are:

N- Melissa     R- Lexie    Y1- Olivia     Y2- Spencer C   Y3- Riley     Y4- Ava    Y5- Finley    Y6- Holly

Now for this week’s Headteacher’s Awards…First was Liam R (Y5) who during his time in isolation at home had been working hard on improving his handwriting. Since returning to school his has used his improved handwriting style in his work, something that he should be very proud of. Well done Liam…keep it up!

Also given a Headteacher’s Award this week was Olivia (Y1). She has been recorded reading one of my children’s favourite stories, Stickman. The award is particularly given for the clarity and expression that she has in her reading throughout the video. Well done Oliva…super reading!

Holly (Y6) has taken her enjoyment of both maths and logic home and made her own infinity cube. The concentration and determination required to make this is something to be highly commended. Great work Holly!

Finally this week were 2 members of Year 2. Firstly Bella brought me the book that she had written at home retelling the story of the birth of Jesus. Her writing was exceptionally good, and to do this in her own time at home shows that she is really embracing her love of learning. Well done Bella!

Lastly was Frederico, who produced some incredible rubbings in his sketch book this week. He found some natural materials (leaves) and using crayons completed some rubbings, trying to make them look like fish swimming. He did an incredible job…keep up the hard work Frederico!

And there you have it, my final blog of the year. I have thoroughly enjoyed my weekly communications both blogging, and vlogging during lockdown 1. I appreciate the positive feedback that has been given by many of you as to the value of celebrating the successes of our community through these forums. I look forward to picking back up where we left off in January.

I hope that you all have a safe, peaceful and enjoyable break, however you and your family celebrate during this period.

Mr Ben Conway

Friday 11th December

Just one week to go until the end of term, and it truly feels like the last few weeks have flown by at a considerable rate of knots! There is a definite festive feel around the school with the decorations and lights around, topped off by our church visits today for each bubble.

Reverend Kate led 4 services aimed at the different ages of our bubbles. Everyone really enjoyed the opportunity to visit church, listen to and sign some songs and learn a bit more about the Christmas story. My particular highlight was the Chocolate Nativity Story shared with our older pupils, a huge thank you Reverend Kate for hosting us!

We have also been recording our first whole school Shephalbury Christmas Production. Much hard work and effort has gone into the creation of this, especially from Mr Klein, and we are all excited to be able to share it with our entire community next week. It will premiere on YouTube to everyone on Tuesday 15th December at 2pm. As we are still in the production stage the link will be ready to share with you on Monday, so please look out for the email when it arrives!

Today was the last day for bringing in cards and gifts to be handed to pupils and members of staff. This process has worked well so far, and has ensured that we have maintained a good level of safety for everyone. All items will now quarantine at school before being handed out at the latter end of next week

As always, one of my favourite times of the week…rewarding our Bucket Fillers and Headteacher’s Award winners!

This week’s tour of the school was assisted by a lucky helper from year 6 and all of the winners were rewarded with their certificate and a cake bar, which this week were Jaffa Cake bars:

N- Georgi     R- Lexie    Y1- Zaki     Y2- Bella    Y3- Riley     Y4- Lewis    Y5- Jacob    Y6- Billy

Now for this week’s Headteacher’s Awards…First this week were 2 pupils from our Year 1 class, Kyla M and Lilly. Kyla designed and created a brilliant string puppet based on their work learning about toys from the past. Super work!

Lilly was given her award for her consistently good work in maths, and for really challenging herself recently. This determination and drive to improve her work is a fantastic attitude to have when tackling new content…well done Lilly!

Also given a Headteacher’s Award for maths this week was Tyler (Y2). He had spent time learning about repeating patterns this week, and completed his work independently, and most importantly explained the reasoning behind his work. Well done Tyler, keep up the hard work!

Someone else working incredibly hard this week is Florence (R) for her independent writing. She took a picture of Rudolph and wrote to tell him that she likes his nose! Lovely work Florence...keep it up!

Finally, this week were 2 members of our Year 4 class. Skye has worked extremely hard all week to learn her spellings and scored 10 out of 10 in her test. This is a fantastic achievement as spelling hasn’t always come naturally to Skye but her determination this week is truly something to be proud of…well done!

The second member of Year 4 to receive an award is Alex. He has created an exceptional Christmas card for a resident at a local care home. Not only were his design and D&T skills fantastic, but hi message was incredibly kind and considerate for its recipient. Well done Alex we are really proud of you!

That is it for this week, I hope that you all have a safe and relaxing weekend.

Mr Ben Conway

Friday 4th December

And just like that we have made it to December and there is definitely the buzz of excitement around the school already. Staff and pupils have been eagerly preparing and recording their parts for the Shephalbury Christmas production which will premiere to everyone on Tuesday 15th December at 2pm. A link to this premiere will be sent out next week, and don’t worry if you miss it as you will be able to watch afterwards at a time convenient to you!

It has been great to return to work this week and see so many happy faces in and around school. Thank you for the warm welcome back! The last couple of weeks have highlighted to me the importance of prompt action should anyone in your household display symptoms. We are seeing lots of schools across the town experiencing positive cases and closing classes and bubbles. Please be vigilant and if you or close family members do display even minor symptoms, be safe, isolate and get a test.

Those pupils who are isolating are accessing their learning through Microsoft Teams, and having the chance to engage in activities with their classes like catch up time and story time. Please ensure that you have taken the chance to access your child’s Teams account using the details that were sent home earlier this term. This will ensure that you are able to access their learning should you have to isolate. For more information, please visit the remote learning page on the website

We have finalised our Christmas schedule this week, and will be visiting St Peter’s Church next Friday in our bubbles for a short service led by Reverend Kate and her team. Unfortunately, we will be unable to invite the rest of our community this year, however we are hoping that we will be able to reinstate this popular school tradition next year.

I would like to set up a parent focus group in the new year to be able to provide us with some feedback and important input with regards to school developments. It would involve being available for a meeting (remote initially) once a term. I am looking for people that may be prepared to review, and offer an opinion on, some school policies and give honest parental feedback in relation to school initiatives. If you would like to be considered for this please send me an email and let me know head@shephalburypark.herts.sch.uk

Now onto some of the highlights of my job…rewarding our Bucket Fillers and Headteacher’s Award winners!

Now I am back I was able to resume speedy tour of the school this afternoon handing out certificates and cake bars, which this week were Roses Orange Crème!

N- Sophie      R- Charlie    Y1- Leo     Y2- Joshua    Y3- Bethany     Y4- Cade    Y5- Richie    Y6- Michael

Now for this week’s Headteacher’s Awards, and there are quite a few that were awarded last week in my absence.

Firstly is Charlie (Y1) who continued his RE learning of the Christmas story at home, creating his own independently written and illustrated book. This was a fantastic effort, with some great writing…well done Charlie!

Next is Tommy (Y5) who received his award for his determination and perseverance with something which he found tricky. Year 5 had been learning about Roman numerals and this isn’t something which came naturally to Tommy at first. However, after reflecting on his learning he had another go at identifying them the following day and nailed! We are really proud of you Tommy, well done!

Lewis (Y4) is no stranger to receiving Headteacher’s awards and this is because of his fantastic work ethic and the quality of work that he produces. His award was given for incorporating his D & T work on pop-up techniques, with his research and knowledge of volcanoes. As you will see below it was brilliant…great work Lewis!

Some more Year 4 pupils this week who should feel really proud are Alessia, Summer and Ava. All three of them have visited me with their writing this week. All of them were absolutely fantastic and included lots of the features of writing that Year 4 have been working on. They had all used excellent descriptive techniques and dialogue, and the progress in their books from September was amazing. I thoroughly enjoyed reading and listening to them all…great work girls!

There has been lots of hard work going on in Year 6 recently, and both Crystal and Sonny have been given awards for continuing their learning at home independently. Crystal has been researching Queen Victoria and produced a fact poster, while Sonny continued his symmetrical Rangoli patter from RE. Well done both of you!

More Year 6 Pupils working hard recently are Chloe and Zack, who have been really determined and focused on improving their reading fluency with Mrs Grizzell. Great work guys…keep it up!

Our next 3 awards are for pupils in EYFS, firstly Tia (R) has been working hard on utilising her phonic knowledge in her writing. This has paid of greatly with her independent writing, super work! Also working hard on using their phonics knowledge in their writing is Olivia (R) who recorded the names of things from around the farm whilst playing ‘I Spy Farm’. Great stuff!

And finally is Teddy (N) who built a cinema out of Lego. He described each of the parts, and what they were watching (Toy Story 4). I particularly liked the air conditioning unit and milkshakes that were a part of his model. Amazing work Teddy, keep it up!

This week I was sent some information relating to Healthy Start Vouchers. These vouchers are available to support some families who are pregnant or have children under the age of 4 to get vouchers every week to spend on milk, fresh, frozen, and tinned fruit and vegetables, fresh, dried, and tinned pulses, and infant formula milk. You can also get free vitamins. For more information, and to find out if you are eligible, please follow the link below:

That is it for this week, I hope that you all have a safe and relaxing weekend.

Mr Ben Conway

Friday 20th November

The end of another week, and once again it has been a very strange week for me! As a family we have now been in isolation since Monday evening, and we are experiencing the challenges that many have faced this year when working and schooling from home. Thankfully, despite my wife contracting the virus, her symptoms remain mild, and the rest of us are well at the moment.

Working full time from home has been an interesting experience so far. Despite enabling me plenty of time to complete paperwork, I miss the day to day contact with our pupils and wider community. Throughout the week I have been in daily contact with Mrs Cropley, Mrs Dean and the rest of the team at school. As ever, they are doing a fantastic job at maintaining the high standards and expectations that we set for staff and pupils around school. Thank you!

You should have received a letter yesterday via email outlining our Christmas arrangements for the last couple of weeks of term. We really want to try and end, what has been a tough year for all, with fun and enjoyment at school. If you missed the email, there is a copy of the letter below.

We have, this week, bought into an online e-book library for school reading books. This will enable your child to access a wider range of levelled reading books from home every week. It Is also there to ensure that should your child be at home isolating you will have continuous access to reading books. The books are all a part of the same Big Cat reading scheme that we already use in school. Each child will be allocated books to their online bookshelf and teachers will be able to see which books pupils are reading and how often they are reading them. You will receive a paper letter with your child’s log-in details on Monday next week.

The wonders of technology will never cease to amaze me and, with the assistance of Mrs Dean, I was still able to lead celebration assembly from home this afternoon. It was great to see all of the children, and as always how excited they are to find out who will be the week’s Bucket Filler!

This week’s Bucket Fillers were rewarded for their hard work with a certificate and a Chocolate Mini Roll…delicious!

As you will know our Bucket Fillers are positive role models in and around our school all of the time. They fill the buckets of others through their kind words and actions, and it is only right that we recognise the contributions that they make in keeping our school the happy place that it is! Well done this week to:

N- Isla      R- Imogen    Y1- Olivia     Y2- Bella    Y3- Phoebe     Y4- Joe    Y5- Katie    Y6- Ava

Now for this week’s Headteacher’s Awards. I was only able to award one of these this week, however Mrs Cropley was delighted to award some in my absence.

Emilia (Y2) came to see me on Monday to show me her fantastic RE work about Christmas. She had used the question prompts that Mrs Lewis had given her to produce some fantastic answers that were really well presented. Well done Emilia!

In Year 1 this week, Vinnie and Autumn were both awarded Headteacher’s Awards by Mrs Cropley for applying their phonics knowledge to their independent writing. This is a fantastic achievement for them both, and it shows how much progress that they are both making in both their phonics and writing. Super work!

And the final award this week went to Anjolaoluwa for his brilliant design and technology work, designing and making a brilliant pop-up Christmas card. His reindeer design and pop-up mechanism are great. Amazing work Anjolaoluwa…well done!

And that is it for this week, I would like to end by just reminding everyone of the importance of adhering to the expectations that we are setting with regards to the wearing of face coverings and only individuals dropping of and collecting. These measures are in place to protect our community as best we can, so that we are able to continue to minimise the risk to all and keep our school running as normal. I urge you to mindful and follow these expectations.

I hope that you all have a safe and relaxing weekend.

Mr Ben Conway

Friday 13th November

Well what a busy and slightly crazy week we have had!

Our Maths dress up day was hugely successful, and all credit to pupils, parents and staff for their creativity in producing some absolutely incredible outfits. Everyone looked fantastic and I know that lots of pupils drive for completing more activities on TTRS or Numbots has been increased over the last couple of weeks. Thank you to everyone for entering in to the spirit of the day, and to Mrs Lewis for planning and organising everything.

In addition to this we had our, now annual, Children in Need Ramble today. Pupils from all year groups took time out from learning to have a leisurely stroll around the park (or around the school grounds for EYFS). A huge well done to everyone for taking part, and thank you to those people who donated to a very worthy cause.

Added on top of this we have had individual photos and lots of fantastic learning.

I had the pleasure, during this afternoon’s assembly, of awarding this year’s school councillors their badges. The manner in which we conduct our regular meetings will have to change for the foreseeable future, but our School Council play an important role in feeding back to me about the thoughts and opinions of pupils, as well as giving pupils a real ownership over the developments that we make in school. A prime example of this is the leading role that last year’s councillors played in the design and development of our library.

Congratulations to the following pupils who have been elected to represent their classes:

Year 1- Alfie B & Olivia

Year 2- Lilly & Joshua

Year 3- Phoebe & Olivia

Year 4- Ella & Joe

Year 5- Teddy & Logan

Year 6- Ava & Andile

And now for the bit I am sure you have all been waiting for…this week’s Bucket Fillers!

This week’s Bucket Fillers were rewarded for their hard work with a certificate and a Raspberry Mini Roll…delicious!

As you will know our Bucket Fillers are positive role models in and around our school all of the time. They fill the buckets of others through their kind words and actions, and it is only right that we recognise the contributions that they make in keeping our school the happy place that it is! Well done this week to:

N- Ashton      R- Alys     Y1- Jake     Y2- Sofia    Y3- Jamila     Y4- Kian T    Y5- Miles    Y6- Noah Sp

Now for this week’s Headteacher’s Awards. As always I thoroughly enjoy being able to share and celebrate pupils’ work with them.

This week has been a quiet week on the Headteacher Award front…Charlie in Year 2 came to see me with his maths work earlier in the week. Mrs Lewis and Mrs Oustayiannis wanted to recognise the progress and increase in mathematical confidence that Charlie has been making recently. The work in his book, and the way that he spoke to me about his maths work clearly demonstrated both of these facts. Well done Charlie, we are really proud of you!

Kian T (Y4) has been following up his work in class with additional learning at home. He went home this week, having learnt about poppies in class, and continued to find out more about Flanders Fields and Moina Michael to bring in and share with his class. Great work Kian!

I don't normally like to use this forum to communicate moans or negative messages. However, over the last couple of weeks there have been a few times where members of our community have shared concerns regarding the inconsiderate parking and manner of driving by others during drop off and collection. I urge you please, in the interest of safety for our families and neighbours, that you drive carefully and park in a safe space (not blocking residents' garages and driveways) if you need to do so. Thank you.

I hope that you all have a safe weekend at home with your families, and look forward to seeing everyone back in school for another great week on Monday.

Mr Ben Conway

Friday 6th November

As we come to the end of our first week back there has definitely been a chill in the air in and around school. I hope that you were all able to enjoy your week last week. As we enter into a new lockdown period I would like to draw your attention to the letter that was emailed out earlier today. If you missed the email you are able to download the letter below:

Children across the school have settled back in well and are applying themselves well to their new learning this half term. I have had the pleasure of joining a few classes this week on a ‘Teams’ meeting, to get them a bit more familiar with our online learning platform. A letter regarding this, and their log in details were sent home yesterday. Please ensure that you keep these details safe, and have a go at logging in at home so that you are familiar with the process. Mr Klein has produced some fantastic video tutorials to walk you through it:

Staff and children have also been getting used our new School Grid dinner system. This is a great way for parents and carers to have some positive conversations about the food choices that children are making at lunch times. Please use this system as an opportunity to involve your child in their food choices and discuss what they will have. Thank you to Mrs Chandler and Mrs Walker for her hard work in getting us all up and running.

Prior to half term I sent out a notification to all parents and carers that there was a vacancy for a parent governor. We had only one parent nominated for the role, Claire Smith, and following the protocols that are in place she will be approved onto the board unopposed. I would like to welcome her to the governing body and thank her for committing to the role for the next 4 years.

During the half term break I let you know of some different local business that were offering to support families with food while schools were closed. You may have accessed some of these offers yourselves. I would like to thank El Bar de Tapas for providing some of our families with a cooked meal every day last week, along with Miss Gaston for delivering the meals.

And now for the bit I am sure you have all been waiting for…this week’s Bucket Fillers!

This week’s Bucket Fillers were rewarded for their hard work with a certificate and a Jaffa Cake Mini Roll…scrummy!

As ever these awards are given out to those pupils who consistently demonstrate the positive attributes that we would expect from role models in and around our school. They are kind and considerate towards others, and doing so because that is the kind of person that they are! It always makes me very proud to see and hear about those pupils who are selfless in their actions, and they all deserve to be recognised. Well done this week to:

N- Lewis      R- Skylar      Y1- Daniel     Y2- Ephraim    Y3- Caleb     Y4- Summer    Y5- Amelia J    Y6- Bethany

Now for this week’s Headteacher’s Awards. As always I thoroughly enjoy being able to share and celebrate pupils’ work with them.

Only a few Headteacher’s Awards handed out this week, however those that have been handed out have been well deserved!

Ephraim (Y2) and Eliannah (Y1) wowed not just myself this week, but also the other staff that had the pleasure of seeing their work. They continued their Black History learning at home during half term and created their own projects researching some famous people, as well as writing about members of their own family. This is an incredible piece of work, especially as it charts some of their family heritage and achievements. They should both be incredibly proud of their work, as I definitely am!

Also this week I have been visited by Raynie who has been learning about poetry in Year 5. She used some of the techniques she had learnt in class to create her own poem about her hopes and dreams for the future. Great work Raynie…well done!

I hope that you all have a good weekend, if you are having some fireworks at home this weekend I would urge you to make sure that you do so safely. The link below provides lots of information on how to keep your family safe.

Mr Ben Conway

Friday 22nd October

And in the blink of an eye we have made it through to half term! It has been an interesting and challenging half term for us all, however as a whole school community we have embraced the adaptations and settled back in fantastically well. I would like to thank everyone for their ongoing support, it has made a real difference to the way that we have been able to get children back into the routines and expectations of school.

This week we have celebrated Black History across the school, with pupils learning about different key figures and themes relating to Black History in the UK. Our week culminated in our celebration assembly this afternoon, with each class sharing their learning via Zoom. It was a great way to link our classes together and share the learning from throughout the school, even though we are currently unable to all get together.

Mrs Spiller and Mrs Cropley delivered your donations to Foodshed this week. They were very thankful for the items received as it will make a great difference to those who are struggling with the current situation. Being able to support others less fortunate than us in our local community is a really generous thing to do, and we are planning on building more community and charity links throughout the year.

This week’s Bucket Fillers were rewarded for their hard work with a certificate and a Jaffa Cake bar…delicious!

As always, our Bucket Fillers are model pupils who have been positive role models in and around our school all week, consistently demonstrating the positive attributes that we expect of all of our pupils. Well done and thank you to the following children for their positive attitudes and commitment to making the right choices this week around our school:

N- Sonny      R- Tia      Y1- Lenny S     Y2- Spencer C    Y3- Melody     Y4- Paddy    Y5- Noah    Y6- Jack

Now my favourite time of the week…Headteacher’s Awards. As always I thoroughly enjoy being able to share and celebrate pupils’ work with them.

Only a few Headteacher’s Awards handed out this week, however those that have been handed out have been well deserved!

Tia (Reception) independently created her own word book, where she has used her phonic knowledge to sound out and blend words in her book. This is fantastic Tia, we are really proud of you!

Year 4 have spent this week learning about the artwork of Chris Ofili, and 3 members of their class have persevered through the week with developing their art skills. Jayden, Lewis and Rhyder brought their fantastic self-portraits to me, of which they should be really proud. They also gave me lots of information relating to Chris Ofili’s artwork, including the use of elephant dung! Well done boys, awesome artwork!

Liam R (Y5) shared with me some additional home learning that he had completed in relation to the space topic that year 5 have been learning about this half term. He created a comprehensive book with information relating to the different planets in our solar system. Superb science Liam!

I hope that you all have a safe and enjoyable week off, and look forward to seeing you all back on Monday 2nd November.

Mr Ben Conway

Friday 16th October

The end of our penultimate week of this half term and what a great week it has been! Our school looks fantastic, thanks to the hard work of our staff, pupils are engaged and learning, and despite all that is going on in the world there is a distinct sense of calmness around the school.

We had a visit from our Hertfordshire Improvement Partner this week to see our school, speak to children and to speak to staff. She was highly impressed with the environment that we work hard to create and maintain and our pupils represented the school brilliantly well. She recognised that we have implemented good systems in and around school in relation to minimising the risk of COVID-19, and that our curriculum, teaching and learning is in a strong position since returning to school. This is something for our school community to be proud of and I would like to thank all of our staff for the hard work and effort that they go to every day.

You will have received a couple of important emails this week from school. The first one is relating to school meals and registering with Schools Grid. If your child has school dinners you will need to ensure that you have clicked the link on the registration email to be able to order meals after the half term break. For more information please speak to the school office.

The second email notified parents about the nomination and elections for any potential parent governors. I have put the letter and form below if you missed it. If you would like to put yourself forward for this role please ensure that your nomination form is returned to the office by 3pm on Thursday 22nd October. For more information please contact me through the school office.

We are still collecting donations for Foodshed next week until Wednesday. Thank you to those who have already donated, if you would like to donate the crates will be out in the one-way drop off system in the mornings next week.

Once again I have been delighted to receive some more items from our Amazon wishlist. The support offered to us by community members in this way is having a positive impact on the children’s day to day lives at school, thank you! This week we have received more books, providing us with a diverse selection for our library and classrooms, games and some electronics kits.

This week’s Bucket Fillers were rewarded for their hard work with a certificate and a Galaxy cake bar, very kindly donated by Mrs Lee, thank you!

As always, our Bucket Fillers are model pupils who have been positive role models in and around our school all week, consistently demonstrating the positive attributes that we expect of all of our pupils. Well done and thank you to the following children for their positive attitudes and commitment to making the right choices this week around our school:

N- Teddy      R- Louis   Y1- Lilly  Y2- Lilly    Y3- Anjolaoluwa     Y4- Ruby    Y5- Lewis    Y6- Erin

Now for some of my highlights of the week…Headteacher’s Awards. It fills me with joy each week when I am able to reward pupils for going above and beyond with their learning. Those who receive these awards should be very proud of their achievement!

Firstly this week Jamie, Ruby and Teddy (Y5), all of whom have extended their learning at home in science, and for Teddy in other subjects across the curriculum. Well done guys…keep it up!

We have been invited to contribute towards a community project at The Lister Hospital for Remembrance Day, and the next two awards were given out for producing some fantastic artwork for this. Joe and Alex (Y4) both used the collage skills to create poppies utilising different materials and textures. They look great boys, well done!

The next award also went to a member of Year 4, Sophia has been extending her learning at home as well. She has used her English and computer processing skills to create and type up a story, and a sequel. She read them both to me and they were delightful to listen to. Just as pleasing was the fact that she has already self identified how she will improve her writing in the future. Well done Sophia, you are becoming a fantastic reflective learner!

In Year 1 this week Steffen and Zaki have both been working extra hard. Steffen has been writing using a wide range of vocabulary to order his sentences. Zaki has also been improving his writing in both his English and creative curriculum work. Well done both of you!

Lilly (Y2) has clearly had a highly productive week having already being nominated as her class Bucket Filler. She is also receiving a Headteacher’s Award for her fantastic work in RE. Well done Lilly we are really proud of you!

Pupils in Year 3 have been learning about mountains and volcanoes in their lessons recently. This has inspired many of them to further their learning at home, and the following three people have produced some wonderful self-led home learning. Bella, Olivia and Nevaeh have all had fun and learned so much more about their topic. Great work girls!

Also in Year 3 this week Damon is being recognised for his incredible improvements in maths. Since coming back in September Mr Klein has seen an enormous improvement in Damon’s work and presentation…amazing work Damon!

In Year 6 this week Anjelika has been awarded a Headteacher’s Award for her brilliant coding in computing. She created a repeating code for a robot dance sequence. I think that she could probably teach most of us a thing or two about coding! Well done Anjelika, fantastic work!

Finally this week are two members of our Reception class. Firstly Rae has learnt how to independently write her surname this week, great work! And lastly this week is Olivia (YR) who has used her phonic knowledge to independently write a sequence of rhyming words. Super phonics Olivia, well done!

I hope that all enjoy a restful weekend!

Mr Ben Conway

Friday 9th October

As we approach the end of another damp week, I have been struck on my travels in and around school by how well our pupils have settled back into life at school. There may be a few differences to the routines of everyday life, but the underlying behaviours and attitudes to work are well and truly evident in classes. Children are focused and learning, making up for the lost time during lockdown.

Hopefully you will have received the letter this week requesting food donations for the Foodshed. This local charity provides a much needed lifeline for local families who are finding finances tight. I would ask that if you are able to donate you do so by bringing some non-perishable food items (tins of soup, dried pasta, rice, tinned fruit or vegetables) and depositing them in the collection box in the one-way drop off system from Monday of next week. If you would like more information about the charity please follow the link below:

Once again I have been delighted to receive some more items from our Amazon wishlist. The support offered to us by community members in this way is having a positive impact on the children’s day to day lives at school, thank you!

If you would like to donate an item from our wishlist please follow the link below:

This week’s Bucket Fillers were rewarded for their hard work with a certificate and a raspberry jam mini roll!

It goes without saying that the children listed below have been positive role models in and around our school all week, consistently demonstrating the positive attributes that we expect of all of our pupils. Well done and thank you to the following children for their positive attitudes and commitment to making the right choices this week around our school:

N- Mason     R- Daniel   Y1- Tommy     Y2- Jude    Y3- Ben     Y4- Raegan    Y5- Owen    Y6- Chloe

And now for this week’s Headteacher’s Awards…Noah (Y5) has been inspired to followed up his learning from science by producing a fantastic poster about the moon. He has used his knowledge to demonstrate the different phases of the moon, and detailed some additional facts . Well done Noah!

Another person who has followed up their learning at home has been Jamie (Y5) who has created a computer generated visual representation of the solar system. Fantastic work Jamie!

Roma (Y2), this week, was awarded a Headteacher’s Award for her maths work on different representations of part whole models. She worked well a range of skills using our mastery approach to maths. Great work Roma!

The final 2 awards this week go to two children in Year 1, firstly Freddie for some fantastic improvements in his writing…well done Freddie, keep it up! And the final award was for Joy, she has been demonstrating some strong learning behaviours and has gone back to edit her writing. Well done Joy!

Friday 2nd October

The end of another week and we have entered October with some distinctly autumnal weather. I had the pleasure of accompanying our Nursery pupils on their weekly welly walk this morning through the woods and into our nature area, a fun and soggy time was had by everyone!

There has been some important communications sent out recently so I hope that you have had a chance to read the newsletter and the information regarding remote learning. If you haven’t yet seen or read them a copy of them is below.

The information relating to remote learning is purely there to make everyone aware of our approach and expectations should something happen, and so that we can all be prepared should something happen. Each child will today bring home the resources, relevant to their year group, that they will need should the school close or if classes had to isolate for a period. Please ensure that this is kept safe and only used in this instance as we will not be issuing any more resources.

I mentioned in my newsletter that we are looking to recruit a new parent governor. Full official information will be circulated shortly, but if you would like more information relating to the role and level of commitment required please come and speak to me.

Another request from the newsletter was for any parents that would be willing to say a couple of lines on camera to contribute to our video for prospective Nursery and Reception children and parents. If you are happy and willing to do this, please let the school office know.

Now onto our weekly celebration of the positive actions and work that has gone on around school this week. Another dash around school this week led to me handing out this week’s Bucket Filler treat, which was a Jaffa Cake bar.

As always the following children have been positive role models for their peers all week, and I am sure beyond, demonstrating the positive attributes that we expect of all of our pupils. Well done and thank you to the following children for their positive attitudes and commitment to making the right choices this week around our school:

N- Melissa    R- Elliott   Y1- Lillyanna    Y2- Ali-May    Y3- James     Y4- Ava    Y5- Amelia Q    Y6- Sonny

I have awarded a fair amount of Headteacher’s awards this week to children, in recognition of their hard work in different areas. Lilly (Y2) brought her creative curriculum work on marionette puppets to share with me. She had produced some fantastic work with a labelled and an explanation of how it works. Well done!

There has been some extremely hard work going on in Year 1 this week, with 4 children receiving Headteacher’s awards…Alfie B, Steffen, Leo and Olivia were all recognised for their brilliant writing, creating their own ending to the Colour Monster story. Also in Year 1 this week, Lenny S has been making and sharing some fantastic predictions with the whole class, well done!

Next was Konnor (Y6), like many of us Konnor has sometimes found it hard to concentrate and present his work neatly. However, Mrs Grizzell sent him for an award for his effort this week in English and for producing some very well presented writing about the Victorians. Keep it up Konnor!

In Year 3 this week, Seth has been recognised for the improvement in his reading. He has been working hard and gone up 3 levels in a short space of time. He has even begun reading chapter books! We are proud of you Seth, well done.

The final award this week was another member of our Year 6 class, Chloe. She is an extremely diligent pupil, and her award this week is for something that she has been working hard at for a long time. In maths she has worked hard over the summer, and since returning, on column addition and subtraction. She is now able to use these methods and explain her working with confidence. A brilliant achievement Chloe, well done!

Finally, I just wanted to say thank you to those of you who have already donated books, games and STEM activities through our Amazon wishlist. Donations like these will make a massive difference to all of us at school! If you would like to gift please follow the link below.

I hope that all enjoy a restful weekend!

Mr Ben Conway

Friday 25th September

We have come to the end of a week of mixed weather and are quickly approaching the end of September. There will be our first newsletter of the year coming out next week, it will be full of information about what is happening in classes, and around the school. Please make sure that you take the time to read it when it so that you are up to speed with what is going on.

There was an email sent out last week relating to parking and dropping of in the streets surrounding the school, but I would like to reiterate the point. Please be mindful and considerate of other local residents, and the parking restrictions on surrounding roads. Not only is it unfair on other local residents, it can also be a genuine safety issue.

You should have received a letter this week from Hertfordshire County Council outlining their response to COVID-19 and what you can do to play your part in keeping us all safe. This, along with other useful information can be found by clicking here.

Once again, my mad dash around school this afternoon to conduct our new style celebration assembly summoned much excitement in classes, and left me slightly out of breath! We celebrated our bucket fillers, Headteacher’s award winners, attendance and house points.

This week our Bucket Fillers were in receipt of a caramel mini roll. As always the following children have been positive role models for their peers all week, and I am sure beyond, demonstrating the positive attributes that we expect of all of our pupils. Well done and thank you to the following children for their positive attitudes and commitment to making the right choices this week around our school:

N- Joshua C  R- Matthew    Y1- McKenzie        Y2- Spencer B    Y3- Elijah     Y4- Dylan    Y5- Raynie    Y6- Lily

It has been a good week for Headteacher’s awards this week with 4 being handed out throughout the week. The first one was awarded to Rhyder (Y4) for his brilliant writing. He had used a range of authorial techniques to build tension in his independent writing, on top of this, his work was extremely well presented…well done, keep it up!

We all know that sometimes we find things tough to begin with when learning new things. However, this week Sereny (Y2) demonstrated resilience in her maths whilst developing her knowledge of different representations of part whole models. Fantastic attitude Sereny, well done!

Dyaln and Emily (Y4) have been applying themselves exceptionally well in art this week, and utilised their collage skills really well to create some very precise collages using different materials. Super work!

The final two awards were handed out during our Friday celebration assembly, these went to pupils in our older year groups. Liam Gilroy (Y5) produced an excellent piece of writing that really impressed Mr Rust with the effort that he had put into it, super work! Finally was Keira (Y6) who also impressed with her writing this week. She has produced a great piece of non-fiction work about the Victorians, brilliant work!

Finally I would like let you all know about one other celebration to finish the week, over the weekend Mrs Lee will be celebrating her 60th birthday. Children in EYFS have helped her celebrate during the day today, and we all wish her a fantastic weekend!

I hope that you all safely enjoy the weather this weekend, stay safe!

Mr Ben Conway

Friday 18th September

And just like that we are at the end of our second full week back! This week has seen an increased emphasis on high quality learning in classes. On my journeys around school this week it still amazes me how well pupils have re-adapted back into the daily life of school. This is particularly noticeable in our Nursery and Reception classes, where children have settled in fantastically well.

Thanks to everyone for limiting how many adults and older siblings are coming onto site at the start and end of the day. This expectation is there to keep us all safe!

Over the next week or so you will be receiving some information about how we intend to conduct parent consultations this term, as well as information detailing our home learning expectations should we be required to close a class, bubble or the school due a positive case or local lockdown situation. Please ensure that you read this information carefully so that you are aware of what will be happening.

Class teachers and I have been updating the website this week so that the class pages are up to date. Additionally I have updated the COVID-19 information page. The pupil absence guide (that was sent out this week) should be your first port of call should your child develop any illness or symptoms whilst at home. This, along with other useful information can be found by clicking here.

Our Friday celebration assemblies have had to change somewhat since last year due to us not being able to congregate together in the hall. Our virtual assemblies now involve a mad ‘Challenge Anneka’ style dash around the school whilst on Zoom to hand out certificates. The first couple of these have proved popular, and it has maintained the special feeling that a celebration assembly should provide for all of our pupils.

This week our Bucket Fillers were in receipt or a jammy mini roll. The following children have demonstrated the positive attributes that we expect of all of our pupils this week. It is a brilliant achievement to be recognised by staff to be given this award. Well done and thank you to the following children for their positive attitudes and commitment to making the right choices this week around our school:

N-Tommy    R- Lexie    Y1- Kyla M    Y2- Charlie    Y3- Olivia     Y4- Alessia    Y5- Isabel    Y6- Vinny

This week I have been really impressed with many pupils, but there are 5 who have stood out and been given a Headteacher’s Award. The first recipient is one of our youngest pupils, Ashton (N) has really enjoyed one of the stories that has been shared in his class this week, We’re Going on a Baer Hunt. He took his interest one step further and created his own version of the book and read it to me. A fantastic start to your journey with us…well done!

Next came two girls from Year 1, both for different reasons. This week Ottilie has worked really hard with her writing, and has applied her phonic knowledge really well to support her. Autumn was given an award for her brilliant work in maths this week…great work girls, keep it up!

George B (Y3) visited me this week to read me his excellently written instructions on how to navigate your way around our one-way system to get into school in the morning…great stuff!

And the final award went to William (Y2), this week he has been committed to all of his work, but was nominated for his maths reasoning by Mrs Lewis and Mrs Oustayiannis. Super work…well done!

I hope that you all safely enjoy the weather this weekend, stay safe!

Mr Ben Conway

Friday 11th September

As we approach the end of our first full week back to school there have been many positives evident in and around our school. Pupils are settling really well back into the daily life and routines of school, and are beginning to really apply themselves in their learning.

We have pupils at the start of their education journey with us at Shephalbury Park, and it has been fantastic to see them coming in happily and engaging with new and established friends in our Nursery and Reception classes. We welcome them and their families to our community, we really look forward to getting to know you over the coming weeks, months and years.

There is a lot of information to share with you below, but it is all equally important and valuable to us all. Please take the time to read it carefully.

I would like to pass on my thanks to everyone who is dropping off or picking up children from school on a daily basis. The procedures that are in place are working smoothly and as a community we are being respectful to each other both before entering and whilst on school grounds. I would just like to remind you all that we are requesting that only 1 adult enters the school site to drop off or collect, this also applies to older siblings who attend secondary school. If they are collecting with a friend or an additional adult I request that they wait outside of the school site until the child is collected.

I am sure that you will have all heard about the new restrictions that will come into force on Monday of next week. I would like to take this opportunity to remind you of your responsibilities as parents with regards to the way in which you and your children choose to socialise outside of school, this includes parties and other social gatherings. The restrictions are in place to keep us all safe, both in and out of school.

Parents of pupils in Nursery up to Year 2 will have seen an interruption in the provision of a school provided fruit snack since the start of term. This has been due to the supply chain getting them back into school was on hold until the middle of this week. Pupils in these year groups will now be supplied a fruit snack on a daily basis. All pupils, including those in the younger years, are encouraged to bring a fruit or vegetable snack to school every day. If you are sending your child into school with grapes, we request that they are at least halved lengthways, regardless of what year they are in. Whole grapes eaten during break times pose a choking risk.

Over the last few days some parents have asked about bringing in treats to share with their child’s class to celebrate their birthday. If you choose to do this, please ensure that what you provide is an individually wrapped, pre-packed item for each child (e.g. a small bag of haribo, mini sized chocolate bar, or equivalent). Please be reminded that all items should be completely nut free.

During the lockdown period we ensured that all pupils had access to school books by taking home reading books and books from our wonderful library. Many thanks to those of you who returned your reading books prior to the holidays via the book drop. Since returning to school we have conducted an audit of the books that haven’t been returned, and by our records around a third of both library and school reading books remain unreturned. I would remind you that we invested heavily in our books last year and it vital to us all that we respect and take care of the resources that we have. If you have school books at home please return them by the end of next week (Friday 18th September). Any unreturned books will be charged to parents should they not be returned by this date.

From this week Years 1 - 6 will be set NumBots and Times Tables Rockstars (TTRS) homework for 30 minutes each week. This equates to 5 minutes a day for 6 days and will be checked every Friday morning. Please ask your child's/children's class teachers for any login information.

Unfortunately we won’t be implementing the staff baking rota for our Bucket Fillers at the moment, however they were all treated to something special and received their certificate during our first virtual celebration assembly this afternoon. ‘Bucket Fillers’ are people who are kind, thoughtful and positive citizens in and around school. It builds on the concept that if we make positive choices we fill the buckets of others, as well as our own, with goodness. The children below have all been recognised by our staff for being such positive role models in and around our school! Well done to the following children this week:

R- Poppy    Y1- Alfie T    Y2- Pippa    Y3- Bella    Y4- Ethan P    Y5- Ellis    Y6- Zack

I also had the pleasure of handing out my first two Headteacher’s Awards this afternoon as I toured the school during assembly. They both went to pupils in our oldest year groups. The first went to Andile in year 6. The whole class have really impressed Mrs Cargill and myself with the attitudes that they have returned to school with, especially with their commitment to their work. Andile has stood out this week, and he was given his award for his excellent use of descriptive vocabulary this week in his English and guided reading work. Well done, a fantastic role model for our school!

The second Headteacher’s Award was given to a pupil who is new to our school, but who has settled in well and impressed myself and Mr Rust with a positive attitude to his work. The award went to Henry in year 5, well done for a fantastic start with us here at Shephalbury Park!

I hope that you all enjoy your weekend, and please stay safe!

Mr Ben Conway

Friday 4th September

Well what a week that has been. It has been fantastic to be able to safely welcome you all back to our school, and see many of you at drop off or collection.

As we come to the end of our first week back for a long time, it feels strange communicating with you all again in this way, as opposed to through a vlog! I am sure that it has been a week of mixed emotions for your children and yourselves, as it has for us as staff. We are ensuring that the wellbeing of the children is at the heart of everything that we are doing. They have had the opportunity this week to see their old teachers and get some closure on last year, and this afternoon were treated to some socially distanced dancing on the field.

Our school has very quickly returned to being full of the buzz of happy learners, and children eager to be back in school. Walking around our school once again fills me with so much pleasure. The children have settled into our new procedures and routines really well.

I would like to extend my thanks to you as parents and carers for the way in which we are dropping off and collecting the children. The morning one-way system drop off is working well and enables pupils to safely get into class. Likewise our end of day procedure is working well. Both of these procedures really rely on parents and children taking responsibility for following the expectations set out, and respecting the others around you, and I would like to thanks you for doing this.

Usually in my blog post I would be sharing with you the pupils who have received recognition for positive work, progressing through levels on Numbots or TT Rock Stars, or for being a Bucket Filler during the week. I am really looking forward to being able to announce some of these next week.

Pupils in Years 1 – 6 will receive a curriculum letter next week which will provide you with an overview of what topics and themes will be covered in their class over the course of this term. It will also let you know which day is your child’s PE day (as they will need to come into school in PE kit on this day) and provide you with your class email address to enable you to contact the teacher.

I hope that you all enjoy a restful weekend, as I’m sure that getting back into the swing of things has taken its toll on many people’s energy levels this week!

Friday 3rd April

This is definitely the strangest end of term that I have seen during my career as an educator, and only having a very small handful of pupils with us to wish well is not how I would have envisaged the end of my second term here at Shephalbury Park.

Despite the current situation we have had an extremely busy term and I find myself looking back on what we have achieved this term with great pleasure due to the breadth and depth of opportunities. We have had lots of fantastic learning opportunities, enriching events and excitement for all. We had our Gamelan week, Science week, new library, visits from Stephen McPartland MP, Hannah Shaw and Mayor Speller, we all dressed up on World Book Day, learnt about Chinese New Year, had our Capital-City-A-Thon, sung at the Royal Albert Hall, run in the County Cross Coutry Championships and all of this alongside our already jam packed curriculum. It goes without saying that this is a testament to our fantastic staff for leading, planning and facilitating so many fantastic curricular and extra curricular learning and opportunities. Thank you to all of them!

While the last couple of weeks have I'm sure taken a lot of acclimatisation for you all at home, the same is very true for our staff. They are working hard to provide home learning activities that are fun and accesible, building on the skills that pupils already have. We have already reviewed what is currently happening and we will be adapting this slightly for when learning is set after the holidays.

As I mentioned in my email earlier in the week, our teachers have put together an Easter Challenge for everyone to take part in over the next couple of weeks. There are 30 challenges on the list and we want to see you taking them on. We have set up a dedicated email address for you to send in pictures, videos, audio of your families completing the challenges. Your evidence will be uploaded onto the Easter Challenge page on the website, so that you can see how each other is getting on. It is not compulsory, but I would encourage you to get everyone involved and pick a couple of challenges everyday. We are all looking forward to seeing what you are getting up to!

The school is now completely closed over the holidays and no one will be monitoring the phones. I have shared my direct contact details in previous communications and would urge you to use these should you need to contact someone.

I hope that you and your families stay safe, listen to the advice that is given, spend quality time together and enjoy each others company over the next couple of weeks.

Friday 27th March

Good afternoon,

Like last week this is an unusual blog post to be writing…as we come to the end of our first week of closure for the majority of our community there has been much for us all to get used to.

Anyway I thought that I’d use this opportunity to say a few things about our new ‘normal’ for the foreseeable future.

Firstly I really hope that you have all managed to stay healthy and safe over the past week. Please make sure that you are following the advice given, and take your opportunity to take your daily dose of exercise.

Hopefully by now you will all have had the opportunity to access the home learning through our website and other platforms. I know how that the internet went crazy with quite a few of the platforms that we use at the beginning of the week, but hopefully this is now sorted. The work that is set by the teachers is there to support you with some ideas of activities to do with the children. There are no expectations from us that you are sitting them down to do a school day at home!

If you get some of the learning done, great. If you have been out in the garden, great. If, like I know some of you have, baked or cooked together, great. If you’re having some quality family time playing board games, great. If you’ve created something incredible out of Lego, great. If you have FaceTimed a relative and read a story together, that’s also great!

There are so many things out there currently for us all to access, make the most of it. Whether it is a daily fitness routine with Joe Wicks or listening to David Walliams reading one of his books, there are plenty of free to access resources that you can be doing together!

There are a small handful of children who are joining us day to day, so that we can support their parents in providing critical services to the public, they are not at school having a normal school day and sitting down to do lessons!

If, like me, you are having to work from home, don’t even try and do ‘lessons’ at the same time. You will drive yourself crazy!

We are living in extraordinary and unprecedented times, and none of us know how long this will go on for. Like everyone else, I sit and listen to the daily briefing from the Prime Minister to work out what we are going to do next. As a school we have tried hard to think about providing you with some materials and activities for you to support your children at home. We are not expecting you to ‘teach’ them anything new or for them to continue to progress through our school curriculum whilst they are not with us.

We will all have had very different experiences whilst we are away from day to day school, but don’t worry about that. It will be our job to support the pupils and get back to where we know they can be when the time comes!

Right now your key priority should be to keep your children and families safe and happy. Yes, keep going with reading, keep going with times tables and Numbots and practice their spellings, and encourage them to do their daily writing. But please don’t cause unnecessary anxiety, worry or arguments because you want your children to do all of their work at once and they want to do something else! It really isn’t worth it.

As a staff we will be reviewing what is sent out and are keen to make sure that it is appropriate and manageable for all.

Stay safe, follow the advice and contact us should you need any support.

Ben Conway

Friday 20th March

Well that was a busy week! I know that this is quite a late post and ordinarily I pride myself on getting this up in good time at the end of a Friday. However this week has been a lot to digest for all of us. I know that I have said it in previous communications, but I want to thank each and every member of staff within our school for giving above and beyond to our community, and for continuing to do so over the coming weeks. The strength and togetherness of our staff is fantastic and I hope that you all appreciate them as much as I do!

Today we said goodbye to one of our longest serving staff members, Mrs Penfound. I am reliably informed that she has worked at the school for 23 years! This truly is an amazing thing for anyone, to show such commitment and dedication to a community and to have an impact across different generations, for which we are all very thankful. We wish her a fond farewell and lots of luck with her retirement.

Due to the nature of the week we haven’t had the usual awards today. However throughout this week it has really struck me how lucky we are to have such a great school; the support from the parent body, staff and the continuing enthusiasm of our pupils has provided me with much happiness at this tough time.

You all should have received the information regarding the home learning expectations today. I will also upload a copy of the information below so that you can see what we expect. The learning can be found on your child’s class page. If you want extra things to do with them have a look at some of our recommended websites.

I appreciate for many of us right now this is a really challenging time, and completely unprecedented. I speak with many of you regularly and we are all worried about a huge variety of things - not least the education of your children. Please remember that you also need to consider your own well-being as parents. Don’t get too annoyed if your child won’t follow the timetable, or you can’t quite remember the sound of a particular diagraph. Just do what you can to be there and support your children in any way that you can. When this is all over and your children return to us we will be there to put things back in place to support them and help them catch up should they need to. Focus on doing what you can, not what you think will be ‘ideal’.

Please do not put undue pressure on yourselves. Remember there will be lots of parents in the same situation - you are not alone!

Mr Ben Conway

Friday 13th March

The end of another busy week here at Shephalbury Park, and another great week it has been. We have celebrated British Science Week with the theme of ‘our diverse planet’. Pupils across the school have taken part in workshops, investigations and activities to promote scientific curiosity and develop their scientific skills. Hopefully they have been sharing their experiences with you at home! I have seen plant investigations, people extracting the DNA from strawberries, a range of animals in school and floating cotton wool. Thank you to Mrs Hart for co-ordinating our overview of activities and arranging the workshops.

This week has also seen pupils venturing into our library for the first time since the refurbishment. Pupils from across the school have had orientation sessions to learn about the new books and where to find them. Lunch time sessions are proving popular, and children are talking enthusiastically about which book they want to read next. I hope that you are supporting our efforts with the encouragement to develop that love of reading at home. We launched ‘Ready, Steady, Read’ last week, and I hope that children are totting up their minutes read at home, as well as being sponsored and collecting money to further enrich the books that we have on offer.

I was fortunate enough to take a trip to the Royal Albert Hall last Sunday to see our small, but perfectly formed, choir perform at the Hertfordshire Schools Music Gala. It was a fantastic performance by all involved and an amazing experience for those involved. A huge thank you to Mrs Oustayiannis for leading and organising, and Mrs Spiller for supporting on the day.

Today was a first for Mr Rust as he baked his first ever batch of cakes! The theme this week was Sports Relief and he created a range of ball themed cakes for our winners. Everyone agreed that he had made a fantastic effort and were delighted with the results! Thank you for providing them. As always our Bucket Fillers encapsulate the positive traits we expect of all of our pupils. We like to set high standards for behaviour and attitudes around our school, and these children have proved themselves to be positive role models. We are proud of all of you:

It has been another bumper week for Headteacher’s awards, and handing these out is truly one of the greatest pleasures of my job. Seeing the delight on the face of the children and the pride that they get from the recognition of being able to share their learning with me reminds me what a special job this is!

Amelia Q (Y4) followed up from our visit by Hannah Shaw last week, by spending time meticulously creating some of her own illustrations. These were fantastic and she was truly inspired by the experience of last week’s workshop. Well done!

Two other people who have been putting in the extra effort at home are Bella (Y1) and Chloe (Y5). Bella wrote and illustrated her own book at home, and Chloe has been practicing many of the skills and methods that she has been taught in both maths and English over recent weeks. Some brilliant commitment to furthering their own learning at home, super stuff!

Another two people have come to me for the same reason this week, and they are Ethan M (Y3) and Elijah (Y2). Both boys have been working extremely hard to improve the standard of their presentation and handwriting, and this effort has really paid off. The improvements are clear to see and what is even better is that both of them recognised that the increased effort has really helped them to improve. Fantastic attitude!

There has been a big focus in our younger years to develop their phonics and early writing skills. This has been really evident in the fact that I have seen 3 children from Reception for great independent writing this week. Jessica wrote a book about a fairy, and Daniel and Eliannah wrote some brilliant independent sentences. Well done!

Finally this week were Konnor and Crystal (Y5). They have both persevered with their maths this week. Initially they found the concept that they were working on quite tricky. However with determination and perseverance they have mastered the method and have been able to apply it in a range of contexts. A great attitude to learning!

A letter updating all parents/carers with regards to Coronavirus information has been sent to everyone on our mailing list. You can also download a copy of this letter below.

I hope that you all have a restful weekend

Mr Ben Conway

Friday 6th March

Well, what a week we have had here at Shephalbury Park! It has been a real pleasure to have the opportunity to have visited all of our classes this week and seen fantastic learning across a wide range of themes and topics. From biomes in Year 5 to dioramas in Year 1, play scripts in Year 3 and rhyming words in Reception. Children have been engaged and thoroughly enjoying the learning experiences created and planned by their teachers.

Alongside all of the brilliant things that we see on a day to basis, the highlight of the week has to be World Book Day. Thank you to everyone for the effort that went into the wide range of costumes that we saw, especially the staff. During the day everyone was treated to a brilliant illustration workshop with Hannah Shaw, who inspired many of us with her stories and pictures. And in the afternoon we welcomed the Mayor Simon Speller to our school to officially open our new library. He visited some classes and talked about his love of books, even bringing in his own childhood favourites to share with us. He had tea with our School Council and chatted about many things. Some councillors even got the chance to become Mayor for a minute by wearing the chain of office. Finally those that had purchased some of Hannah’s books got the opportunity to meet her in the library and have them signed. It was a truly memorable day for everyone, and a great way to kick off our sponsored ‘Ready, Steady, Read’ event.

You all should have received information, a sponsor form and reading log for ‘Ready, Steady, Read’ on Monday of this week. This is a fantastic way to get everyone reading a range of different things (it doesn’t just have to be books!), or listening to stories with others. Collectively the more we read, the more enjoyment we will get from it, the more money we are able to raise, the more books we will be able to further supplement our library. The event will run from 5th March – 20th March, and during this time you can use your reading log as evidence of your home reading instead of your reading diary if you wish. I look forward to see who is totting up the highest number of minutes! If you can’t find the details you can download them below:

Mrs Oustayiannis baked some early Easter treats for this week’s Bucket Fillers with a mini-egg cake. There was very little left by the time the children left my office this morning, thank you for providing them! As always our Bucket Fillers encapsulate the positive traits we expect of all of our pupils. We like to set high standards for behaviour and attitudes around our school, and these children have proved themselves to be positive role models. We are proud of all of you:

N- Harvey   R- Jessica   Y1- Olly  Y2- James  Y3- Zafran  Y4- Katie  Y5- Zack  Y6- Chloe

I commented last week that I had an influx of Headteacher’s awards, and if that was the case this week has seen a deluge! The week began with Olivia (Y6) coming to show me the progress that she has been making in maths. She openly admitted that she finds some aspects of maths challenging (as do a lot of us!) but she has shown determination to overcome these challenges and is positive and proud of the progress that she has made. Well done!

Anjelika, Lillia and Lily (Y5) presented their research on the Taiga Forest biome from their Geography lessons in a fantastic poster. It was creative and clearly displayed the knowledge that they had gained throughout the lessons. Fab work!

Alfie B and Freddie (R) had worked hard to apply the knowledge that they had gained through their English lessons this week to create some lists of rhyming words. We talked about how we knew that they rhymed and any other words we could think of that also rhymed with them. Great stuff!

Noah St (Y5) was extremely proud of his maths work on fractions this week. He felt that he had mastered adding fractions with different denominators really well, and Mrs Cropley and Mrs Oustayiannis also agreed! Super maths work!

Three pupils in Year 3 had worked hard this week on their play scripts. Rhyder, Ella and Maya had not only worked hard on their initial creations, but they had listened to the feedback that they were given, understood how to improve their work, and then edited it. Great reflective learning!

And finally this week I was visited by Rylan and George B (Y2) for their work in science this week. They had been investigating the effects of certain conditions on plants and making predictions as to what they thought would happen. They had carefully considered these predictions and backed them up with valid ideas. Great science work!

I am delighted to let you all know that we were successful in appointing an Assistant headteacher last week. Mrs Dean will be joining us permanently after the Easter holidays and will be working 4 days a week. Her responsibilities will be for inclusion and pastoral welfare across the school. I would like to formally welcome her to the Shephalbury Park community and we all look forward to working with her over the coming months and years.

There is a lot written about and commented on in the media with regard to the current Coronavirus situation both locally and nationally. I can assure you that we are following all of the advice that is pertinent to us and ensuring good hand hygiene is high on that list. Children were shown a song in assembly earlier this week to encourage them to wash their hands well. You can see this by following the link below:

Friday 28th February

Welcome back after what I hope was an enjoyable half term break for you all. We have all got straight back into the swing of things here at Shephalbury Park with some fantastic learning happening across the school. This will be a slightly truncated blog post today as there is the newsletter also coming out to you all today, packed full of information about what has been happening and what is coming up in the next month. Please take some time out to have a read.

A little reminder for those who may wish to pre-order and buy a book by our visiting author next week, Hannah Shaw, books are available from the school office. You will be able to collect your book on World Book Day and have it signed by Hannah in our library.

Mrs Ramus created some leap year themed cup cakes for our Bucket Fillers this week. They looked great and tested even better! Thank you for providing them. This week it was particularly pleasing to welcome some pupils who have sometimes found it hard to display all of the attributes of a good Bucket Filler, but have worked hard to make the right choices with their behaviour, attitude to school and the way in which they behave towards others. Coming to a tea party really is a well deserved privilege for those who are selected, and our pupils all speak enthusiastically about the chance to be chosen and how well rewarded they feel if and when selected. Well done to the following children this week:

N- Finley   R- Steffen   Y1- Tyler  Y2- Caleb  Y3- Dylan  Y4- Jamie  Y5- Walid  Y6- Jamie

There have been lots of children working hard over half term to make progress on Numbots, well done to all of those pictured below for furthering their learning at home!

I have had an influx of Headteacher’s awards this morning, recognising some of the fantastic work that some of our pupils have been doing this week. However at the start of the week Connie (N) was awarded the first award of this half term, she has been an absolute reading superstar since starting to take home her reading book. She reads every single night at home with an adult and makes sure that her reading record is signed. This is a brilliant routine to get into at such an early point in her education journey, well done! Another of our youngest pupils has also been hard at work this week. Imogen (N) took the puppets that she had made during our Working Together Wednesday session and created her own imaginative story with them at home. I had the pleasure of watching it on Tapestry (our online learning journals for EYFS), super work!

Next this week was Nevaeh (Y2) for her exceptional home learning around their current topic of The Great Fire of London. During half term she visited London to do her own research and visit the key sites of the fire. She has since followed this up with a photo diary and some art work to reflect her research. Brilliant work, well done.

And finally for this week are 4 awards for pupils in Year 5, for two different reasons. Sonny and Dennis were awarded theirs for their conscientious attitude and positive teamwork when litter picking in the lanes around school. This is a part of their current English unit of work, but both boys showed a genuine commitment to improve the cleanliness of our local area. A great attitude and positive citizenship, well done! The final two recipients were Noah Sp and Elliott for their exceptional work in Geogrpahy this week investigating climate zones around the world. They used the atlas skills that they have been developing, along with research skills to investigate the different zones and what the climate is like in each of them. Super stuff boys, well done!

I hope that the weather perks up a bit for us all over the weekend, and that you all have an enjoyable one!

Friday 14th February

In a blink of an eye we are half way through the academic year, and we have had a jam packed week full of fun, excitement and fantastic learning opportunities for everyone. We have welcomed students from The University of Hertfordshire this week for the Gamalan project. Pupils have participated in singing and music workshops throughout the week, which culminated in Key Stage 2’s fantastic performance this afternoon. A huge thank you to the students for working with and educating our pupils this week, it has been a lot of fun for everyone!

Also this week we have had the installation of our new library. You will have seen and heard me talk about this a lot since I joined in September, I truly believe that developing a love, excitement and enjoyment for reading is key in unlocking learning potential in all of our learners. Once complete we will have a fantastic facility, full of a wide range of books for everyone to engage with. We are still spending much time organising and setting it up, and I must say a huge thank you to Mrs Grizzell, Mr Gorman and Mr Hobbs, along with our Year 6 helpers and school councillors for the time and effort they have put into this project as it wouldn’t have got to this point without their commitment to it! Pupils will get the opportunity have an orientation lesson around the new library in the first week back after half term, with lots more planned after the official opening on Thursday March 5th.

The grand opening of the new library coincides with World Book Day, another way that we are engaging with our learners about their favourite books and book characters. A reminder that we are inviting children and staff (and parents if you so wish!) to dress as their favourite book character for the day, and/or bring a copy of their favourite book to school for the day. There has been much discussion already in the staff room over what the staff will be coming as, we look forward to seeing a wide range of characters joining us! This day will also see us being joined by author and illustrator Hannah Shaw (https://www.hannahshawillustrator.co.uk/) who will be leading workshops for all of our children. At the end of the day there will be an opportunity to meet her and get her to sign books. We currently have a stock of some of her books, a letter will come out to you on the first day back after half term letting you know how you can pre-order one of these to be collected and signed on the day.

Today saw the culmination of our house competition for this half term, the Captial-City-A-Thon Finals were held in front of the school this morning. The winners from each class came to the front and pitted the knowledge of capital cities, continents and oceans against each other to win a prize and more importantly 20 house points! Each final was truly well contested and there were very few (only 1 I think) incorrect answers, with nearly all finals going into tie breaks. Well done to everyone who got through to the finals as this is a huge achievement in itself, and a special well done to the following champions: Leo and Charlie (R), Sofia (Y1), Ben (Y2), Lewis (Y3), Owen (Y4), Jack (Y5) and Sienna (Y6).

I don’t usually use this platform to send out reminders, as on the whole we deal with most things in an immediate way to nip them in the bud. However over the last couple of weeks we have seen a decline in the pride that pupils are taking in their appearance in relation to adherence to our school uniform expectations, in particular with regards to footwear and hair accessories. May I remind you that it is your responsibility to ensure that children are meeting these expectations. Shoes must be black (not sports trainers), and hair accessories (bands and bows) should be small and either navy or white. If you have an issue with meeting the uniform expectations then please feel free to contact me through the school office. https://www.shephalburypark.herts.sch.uk/uniform-information-1/

Mrs Spiller treated our Bucket Fillers to some Valentines themes chocolate brownies this week. Everyone agreed how temting they looked, and the taste of them certainly didn’t disappoint our winners this week. Thank you for providing them! This week it was particularly pleasing to welcome some pupils who have worked incredibly hard on making the correct choices, even when those around them aren’t. This is a valuable life skill and something that this week’s winners should be proud of. Well done to the following children this week:

N- Tia   R- Zaki   Y1- William   Y2- Anjolaolauwa   Y3- Ava   Y4- Tommy  Y5- Samuel   Y6- Lucia

It has been a slightly quieter week for Headteacher’s Awards this week, however those who have been awarded are truly deserving! Anjolaolauwa (Y2) has been working incredibly hard this week to produce a fantastic piece of descriptive writing based on their current topic of The Great Fire of London. He used the descriptive techniques that had been taught and should be very proud of his application throughout the writing process, well done!

The other awards were for 4 pupils in Year 1 Lilly, William, Sofia and Maia, all of whom wrote some excellent instructions. They have been spending a lot of time looking at the Gingerbread Man recently, and had fun writing instructions on how to make gingerbread people (after making them for themselves last week). They were all really well written and it sounded like that had had a great time during the course of their writing unit. Well done to them!

Finally I would like to let you know that the planning for the Summer Fair is well underway, with raffle prizes being requested, some sponsorship being gained and bookings for stalls being taken. If you or anyone that you know would like to sponsor the event in anyway, donate a raffle prize or have a stall on the day please get in contact with us at summerfair2020@shephalburypark.herts.sch.uk

I hope that you all enjoy a fantastic week off and look forward to seeing everyone back at normal time on Monday 24th February!

Mr Ben Conway

Friday 7th February

The weeks are flying by and there is, as always, so much happening in and around our school. This week our library refurbishment project has got well and truly underway, with the old furniture being removed, and the room being redecorated and readied for the new fixtures and fittings next week. A huge thank you to Mr Gorman and Mr Hobbs for their work in there so far, to ensure that we have a fantastic new reading environment for our community. I will update you all with some pictures next week to see the finished article.

Also this week we were visited by our local MP Stephen McPartland, this came about due to the work we did on the general election at the end of last year. He spoke to us all in assembly about what his job involves and the answered some very thoughtful and well considered questions from pupils in years 4, 5 & 6. You will see more about his visit in this month’s newsletter.

Mr Klein was this week’s baker for our Bucket Filler’s Tea Party, and he certainly didn’t disappoint those who were selected to come. His Cream Egg rocky road bites looked truly incredible! Thank you to him for providing them. As always it gives me great pleasure to spend time with the pupils who visit each week, as they are true role models in and around our school. I hope that they are all proud of their achievements and recognise the reward in attending our Tea Party. Well done to the following children this week:

N- George  R- Daniel   Y1- Spencer B   Y2- Phoebe   Y3- Jessie   Y4- Finley  Y5- Angelika   Y6- Shakira

It has been a truly bumper week for Headteacher’s awards this week, which goes to show the dedication and commitment to learning that our pupils are demonstrating in their work. Awards were given to Sienna, Johnny, Adrian, Evie, Abigail and Niamh in Year 6 for their work in maths. The Year 6 maths curriculum can be very challenging at times, however these pupils have developed a really sound understanding of how to solve unit fraction problems using bar models. Well done!

Going from some of our oldest pupils to some of our youngest…I was visited by both Eliannah and Lilly from Reception, both for some excellent English work. Eliannah for her writing, and Lilly for her retelling of the story Handa’s Surprise.

In Year 2 this week, Olivia beat Mrs Lewis in a times table challenge, a brilliant achievement, this earnt her an award. I was lucky enough to see Year 3’s lesson on cave painting, supporting their learning about the Stone Age, last week. They were using natural materials (soil, berries, leaves and sticks) to create some brilliant images. Two pupils who excelled at this were Jessie-Mae and Alex, super work from them!

The final 3 awards went to pupils in year 5, firstly Keira for mastering the use of bar modelling to calculate missing number problems. This is something she has worked hard at improving and now feels very confident with. Walid has been working hard on gathering words to describe different Amazonian animals for his poetry work. His choice of words to describe a sloth were very apt, and he utilised a thesaurus really well to improve his word choice. The final award was to Dennis for his ongoing outstanding contribution to RE lessons in his class. Year 5 have spent much time learning about Judaism this year, and Dennis has regularly made valuable contributions in lessons, and produced work of a high standard.

This week our Numbots certificate winners have all been working hard to progress to the next level in their challenge. Well done to the following children: Roma, Bella, Keira, Emilia, Amelia, Nevaeh, Lilly and Ephraim.

Next week we will be joined by a group of teaching students from the University of Hertfordshire, who will be running Gamelan workshops all week across the school. Pupils will explore some unfamiliar instruments and learn some songs for a performance next week. We would like to invite parents of pupils in years 3, 4, 5 & 6 to join us for a performance next Friday 14th February at 2pm in the hall.

Finally I would like to thank those of you with pupils in EYFS, as well as our EYFS staff team and the children. There has been a bit of upheaval this week with some boiler issues in their classrooms, however learning has continued in the hall and studio in a fantastic way. The children and staff have been really adaptable and are still having every opportunity to learn and play in a constructive and developmental way. We are working hard to ensure that our issues are resolved as soon as possible.

I hope that you all enjoy a great weekend!

Mr Ben Conway

Friday 31st January

The end of another week and the month…and hasn’t it flown past at a rate of knots? As always there have been many things happening in and around school this week with Chinese New Year Learning day, a trip for Years 3 & 4 and some of our governors visiting to see how we are developing our curriculum in and around the school. As it is the end of the month there is our first newsletter of 2020 coming out to you all today, so for loads of extra information about what is going on please take the time to have a read!

This week our Bucket Fillers couldn’t believe their luck, as Mrs Bond had baked a strawberry flan and chocolate cupcakes, a real treat for them all! As you will see in the picture below she has clearly gone to a lot of effort, thank you. As always, our Bucket Fillers have demonstrated the positive values we expect of all of our pupils in and around our school. Whether it is by listening to others, being a good friend, holding the door open for someone or being consistently polite, they are all a real credit to our Shephalbury Park learning community, and I thank them all for that. Well done to the following children this week:

N- Ronnie   R- Liam   Y1- Roma   Y2- George   Y3- Lewis   Y4- Amelia J   Y5- Billy   Y6- Grace

Another good week for Headteacher’s awards this week, with another 5 being handed out. The first went to Erin (Y5) for demonstrating determination and perseverance in her maths work. She has developed her multiplication methods so that she is now confident with the expanded formal methods used in Year 5. Great work! Also in Year 5, Ronnie was so engaged with the learning on Chinese New Year Learning Day he took his riddle writing to the next level, spending time during lunch creating his own riddles for me to solve. They were fantastic, and he even taught me the trick to solving them.

Following these two Year 5 pupils are two pupils from Year 4. Firstly Noah brought me some work he had created in RE, they had been learning about symbols, particularly in relation to Sikhism. We discussed the 5Ks of Sikhism and what each element represented, followed by him showing me the symbols that he had created that represented his own life. Secondly from Year 4 was Hobie, who has been working extremely hard on mastering some of his times tables. We all know how frustrating it can be when things are taking time to learn, however he has been really determined and persevered to achieve something which he had initially found tough. Well done!

Finally an award was given to Oscar (Y1) this week for some fabulous writing. He had worked independently to write his own version of the traditional tale of the Gingerbread Man. His adapted version ‘The Gingerbread Dinosaur’ was well written and neatly presented, a great effort!

7 children were awarded Numbots certificates this week for their hardwork in moving up levels. Well done to Raegan, Konnor, Jamila, Olivia, Spencer C, Joshua and Harvey. Additionally there was on person achieving the status of ‘Rock Legend’ on Times Table Rockstars this week, and that was Noah (Y4), a huge achievement and only one of a few children in our school to have reached this level. A super effort, well done!

I hope that you all enjoy a fun and relaxing weekend,

Mr Ben Conway

Friday 24th January

The end of another busy week here at Shephalbury Park with lots to write home about. As I let everyone know last week, the library will be closed from February 3rd for the refurbishment, with that in mind we would like all library books returned this week to enable us to reorganise them all in the new library once it is installed. Please be aware that you may receive a letter requesting payment for any lost or unreturned books. We will be learning about Chinese new year on Monday in our latest learning day, I’m sure you will hear all about it on Monday evening! Gong hei fat choy to anyone celebrating this weekend.

A huge thank you to those parents who attended the Summer Fair planning meeting this Monday night. We made some great progress with our discussions and have set the date of Saturday 27th June between 1&4pm. There were many other things discussed including stalls, activities and a raffle. We are all very keen and excited to make this a fantastic event, but can’t do this this without your support. I have sent a letter home via email today with further details and information on how you can help and get involved. You can also download this letter below.

Mrs Cropley had the pleasure of leading the tea party today for this week’s bucket fillers. Mrs Lee was this weeks Baker providing some delicious cupcakes and a special fortune cookie for each winner to take home in celebration of Chinese New year which begins tomorrow.  A huge thank you to her for these treats! Well done to the following children this week:

N- Imogen   R- Emma    Y1- Sofia    Y2- Neveah    Y3- Summer    Y4- Lewis    Y5- Olivia    Y6- Harley E

It has been a good week for Headteacher’s awards this week, with 4 being handed out. The first went to Lilly in Reception for some fantastic sentences written about people with some rather interesting hairstyles, my personal favourite was the strawberry design! The second award also went to a Lilly, but this time in year 1, she had taken a trip to London over the weekend and had made a poster with some amazing illustrations and facts about the Tower of London. It was a real pleasure to hear how much she had enjoyed her trip and to see how much she had learnt. My third recipient this week was Olivia in year 5, or oldest pupils have been learning about deforestation in South America, in particular for the production of palm oil. She had thought long and hard about the environmental impact of the food choices that we make and choose not to eat her snack due to it containing palm oil. I am very proud that the learning that is happening in our school is provoking thought and discussion in this way, and am particularly proud of the conscientious attitude that Olivia has taken towards her food choices. My final award went to one of our youngest pupils, Tia in nursery, who created her own mobile phone and independently wrote out the numbers 1-10. Well done to each and every one of them for their effort and application this week.

Mrs Lewis handed out a raft of Numbots certificates today, well done to all of the children for persevering and improving the skills and knowledge this week to achieve these.

I hope that you all enjoy a fun and relaxing weekend,

Mr Ben Conway

Friday 17th January

A wet and windy week hasn’t put the brakes on our learning over the past week. Pupils across the school have settled back in really well, focusing in lessons and engaging in the broad curriculum that we provide them with. I have seen children talking about The Great Fire of London, investigating the Stone Age and delving into South America. It has also been great to see how our youngest pupils, in Nursery and Reception, are developing their life skills in their refurbished snack area. These pupils are using proper place settings, crockery and glasses, all very carefully and developing their skills with these very well.

As mentioned last week the plans for the library refurbishment are well underway. We are also investing in the stock that we hold in the library, and have had some very keen and able pupil helpers labelling, stamping and scanning books onto our library system. We will be celebrating the ‘Grand Opening’ of our library on Thursday March 5th, which coincides with World Book Day. We have a fun day planned for everyone, and also have some invited guests. We will be being visited by author and illustrator Hannah Shaw (https://www.hannahshawillustrator.co.uk/) for the entire day, she will be leading illustration workshops for pupils in all years throughout the day. There will be a chance to purchase her books and have them signed on the day. We will also be welcoming the Mayor of Stevenage to assist with the opening ceremony.

On this day we would like pupils to dress up as their favourite book character or bring their favourite book to school.

A reminder about the first planning meeting for the Summer Fair, it will be held on Monday January 20th at 7pm in the school hall. I would really appreciate as many people as possible turning up to support with the discussions, as we all know many hands make light work!

Miss Gaston provide the bake for this week’s Bucket Fillers. As it is January she provided us with some vegan chocolate muffins, made in the most eco-friendly way possible. Everything was mixed by hand, with the only energy usage being that of the oven. As I’m sure you can imagine, the pupils took no time at all to demolish the lot! Thank you to Miss Gaston for providing these tasty muffins. Well done to the following children this week:

N- Rogan    R- Jaden    Y1- Mina    Y2- Olivia    Y3- Hannah    Y4- Owen    Y5- Chloe    Y6- Olivia

I have only handed out 1 Headteacher’s Awards this week, and that went to Spencer B in Year 1. This was a very pleasing award to hand out, as he has shown a great determination to improve his work, and his attitude towards it. This was very clear and evident in his English book this week, where there has been clear progress and improvement since returning after the holidays. Well done Spencer, I am proud of you for this!

Some others who have been working hard at their times tables this week are Lucia (Y6), Finley (Y4) and Ellis (Y4). Lucia has achieved the status of ‘Rock Star’, and Finley and Ellis the status of ‘Rock Hero’. Well done to all of them as it takes dedication and determination to progress through to this standard!

I hope that you all enjoy a fun and relaxing weekend,

Mr Ben Conway

Friday 10th January

Happy new year to you all, I hope that everyone had an enjoyable and restful break over the holidays!

As we return for our Spring term I would like to welcome Miss Martin (Year 1), Mrs Cochlin (Year 2) and Mrs Dean (INCo) to our staff team, we are really pleased that you are joining us and I’m sure that you will all make them feel very welcome within our learning community. Our pupils have returned full of vigour and ready to continue their learning journey for the year, with the start of some fantastic new topics, and some inspiring & engaging learning already clearly evident across the school.

I reported in my newsletter at the end of last term that we would be having our newly refurbished library installed as soon as possible. The installation will be taking place in the last week of this half term. With that in mind, the library will be closed from Monday 3rd February until after half term. Please ensure that all library books are returned by this date and note that we will not be opening up for library and ICT suite community usage (on Monday and Tuesday after school) on February 3rd, 4th, 10th & 11th. As you can imagine we are all very excited for this and are working hard to not only improve the environment, but also to develop the books that we have on offer for everyone to access. The skills of reading are an essential life skill for everyone, and we are really keen to develop a real love of learning for everyone in our learning community. We have invested heavily in this, but would like to offer out the opportunity for others to contribute in any way that they can. School Council have thought of a scheme to support donations. Look out for a letter from them next week.

If you have read my previous correspondence you will have seen reminders and messages about the first planning meeting for the Summer Fair. A reminder that it will be held on Monday January 20th at 7pm. This is as a result of our last parent coffee morning meeting. At the meeting we will begin to formulate a strategy and create a team to plan and orchestrate the fair. If you would like to be a part of the team in any way, shape or form I urge you to attend. Remember many hands make light work, and also will hopefully create a fantastic event that we can all be proud of.

It was my turn on the baking rota this week, and the first Bucket Fillers of 2020 were treated to my chocolate drizzled meringues. It was fantastic to welcome pupils who have returned to school with the same positive attitude to those around them that we expect of all of our pupils. Thank you to them for being such positive role models in and around our school! Well done to the following children this week:

N- Maya    R- Kyla D    Y1- Jude    Y2- Kian    Y3- Ronnie    Y4- Ruby    Y5- Bethany    Y6- Ade

I handed out 5 Headteacher’s Awards this week, with the majority of them going to pupils in Year 5. Firstly Billy and Olivia came to show me the additional home learning that they had done based on their exciting new geography topic of South America. They were so excited about and engrossed in the subject that they went home and researched countries, continents and key facts relating to these from around the world. This demonstrates a tremendous work ethic from them, as well as celebrating the engagement in a new topic in their class. The next person to receive an award was Charlie in Reception, he has also been engrossed in learning about the new member of his class (a 1.5m tall skeleton who is yet to be named!). His enthusiasm for it was infectious, and he went home and created a life sized model using paper plates. Finally we celebrated some brilliant art work from Year 5 pupils Noah Sp and Lillia, who both produced some fantastic images of a macaw using oil pastels. Well done to each and every one of them!

Another person who needs to be recognised for a fantastic achievement this week is Ben (Y2), he is the first person this year to be awarded the title of 'Rock Icon' meaning that his average response time to answering all questions on TT Rockstars is less than 0.5 seconds. This really is something to be proud of, well done!

Finally, I would like to just draw your attention to a letter that is coming home with every single pupil across the school today. This half term’s House competition is a Capital-City-A-Thon, where each child is expected to learn a range of places as outlined on the letter. This is a great way to develop some self-led learning with your child and finding some intuitive ways to memorise some fun facts. If your child mislays their copy you can download it below, or come to the school office to ask for a paper copy.

I hope that you all enjoy your weekend,

Mr Ben Conway

Thursday 19th December

Welcome to the final blog post of 2019...you will see a link below to download a copy of our latest newsletter, which contains lots of information about what has been happening over the last few weeks, so please check it out!

As we reach the end of the term we have had some fantastic events for everyone across the school, including the disco, performances, carol concert and pantomime trip (thank you for being patient with our late return!). This has created such a fun and exciting place to be, where everyone is learning and enjoying being a part of our Shephalbury Park community.

There was no Bucket Fillers Tea today, but this will resume in the new year. There were however lots of Numbots certificates handed out in assembly. Also there is a new Rock Star in town...well done to Brooke for achieving this status!

We also celebrated to pupils who have been exceptional with their presentation this term, or who have made good progress with improving the presentation of their work. These pupils should all be proud of their achievements with this and keep it up when we return in January...well done!

And finally this term I would like to thank each and every person for their hard work and support of our school since I joined in September. This is a very special community and it is a privilege to be a part of it. I hope that those of you who celebrate have a fun and joyous Christmas and look forward to seeing you all back here on Tuesday 7th January.

Mr Ben Conway

Friday 13th December

The end of another week and we are well and truly on the countdown to Christmas. We have seen some fantastic performances by our pupils in both the Key Stage 1 production of ‘Born in a Barn’ and our Early Years Christmas Concert. There were many stand out performances from many of our pupils and we are incredibly proud of all of you for shining on stage, well done! Along with these brilliant performances comes all of the hard work and effort that the staff put in to create such brilliant experiences for us all. I’m sure that you will all join me in thanking them for this.

Last Friday saw our House Cross Country competition, which was hotly contested in quite muddy conditions. There was maximum effort exerted but all of the pupils, desperate to earn as many house points for their team as possible. There were some stand out performances, especially for those children who won in their year groups. The overall result was incredibly tight, with 2 houses tying for the win: Joint 1st Dragons & Unicorns 343points, 3rd Phoenix 326points, 4th Griffin 289points. Well done to our winners, and good luck to the top three boys and girls in years 5 & 6 who will go forward to represent us at the cross country championships in February next year.

Our Bucket Fillers this week were provided with some incredibly seasonal snowman cupcakes, very ably provided by Mrs Cargill. Thank you for these, the children were definitely not disappointed! As always I am incredibly proud of these pupils for encapsulating and portraying positive behaviours in and around our school. Well done to the following children this week:

N- Henry     R- Tommy    Y1- Maia     Y2- Ben     Y3- Joe     Y4- Raynie     Y5- Konnor     Y6- Katie

This week saw only one Headteacher’s Award presented, and that was to someone who, amongst a whole host of glittering performances, really shone on stage. Nevaeh (Y2) performed so incredibly well, and her performances were commented on by many of the audience members. We are all incredibly proud of you for being so confident up on stage in front of so many people, well done!

Also presented in today’s assembly were our Christmas card competition winners. Each winner was selected by School Council (and they couldn’t select only 1 winner from Year 5 due to the high quality entries!). The winners were all rewarded with 5 house points each that had already contributed to this term’s totals. Well done to all of our winners!

As ‘Election Fever’ swept the nation this week, it didn’t miss us here at Shephalbury Park. Having given speeches and campaigned around the school, Year 6 pupils were competing for the pupils’ votes. On Thursday our polling station opened and all pupils in years 1-6 cast their vote. The outcome very much mirrored the actual election result, with The Conservative Party being victorious. Look out in next week’s newsletter for a full press release.

This week also saw the first of our ‘Community Lunches’. Four residents from Roebuck Nursing Home visited us on Wednesday this week to share a roast dinner and conversation with some Year 6 pupils and our school councillors. It was a fantastic opportunity for some intergenerational experiences and all participants got a lot out of the experience. A full report of this will be in the newsletter. We are already planning some more opportunities for the new year.

Finally a couple of notes about next week:

Monday

Christingle and Advent Learning activities; pupils will be learning about the significance of these through some activities led by Reverend Kate.

The disco will run from the end of school until 5pm. Pupils should bring their change of clothes to school with them, and will need no additional money. All children will be dismissed from the hall safeguard all of them. Please come to the studio side entrance, next to the EYFS entrance where we will filter parents through the hall to collect pupils.

Tuesday

We would love to welcome you to our carol service at St Peter’s Church from around 9am, following this we will be singing outside the CO-OP, feel free to join us there as well. Pupils may wear a Christmas/festive/seasonal jumper for the day with their normal school uniform.

Pupils will be having Christmas lunch together, if your child would like this and you haven’t yet paid please contact the school office.

Wednesday

Early Years parents are invited to join us for some Christmas activities in classes straight from 9am. Straight after this, at 9.30am, is a session in the hall for Nursery and Reception parents regarding Tapestry. This is to show you how to access your child’s online learning journal to see what they have been doing at school. This session will be repeated at 2.30pm for any parents who couldn’t make the earlier one.

Years 1-6 will be going to the pantomime (Sleeping Beauty) at the Wyllyotts Theatre. Our approximate return time will be 5pm. Pupils must be in full school uniform. We will dismiss the pupils in the same way as we do following the disco, from the main hall with parents entering from the side Studio entrance.

Thursday

Break up for the Christmas holidays at 1.30pm

I hope that you all have a fantastic weekend,

Mr Ben Conway

Friday 6th December

A wet end to the week hasn’t dampened the children’s enthusiasm for House Cross Country this afternoon. All pupils in years 1-6 donned their PE kits and trainers to compete in our first inter-house sporting event of the year. There were many notable performances from pupils of all ages, determined to earn maximum house points for their team. Well done to the winners in each year group, full details of the winners will be in the end of term newsletter. The house points won in this will contribute to the points already accrued through this term. The winning house for the term will be announced in the middle of next week, with the winners being allowed to come to school in their pyjamas next Friday (the reward that was determined and voted for by School Council).

It was fantastic to welcome some parent body representatives this morning to discuss some ideas about doing some fundraising events for the school, and potentially formalising a parent teacher association. There were some really great ideas shared, with the key outcome being that we will be holding a summer fair next year. In order for this to happen we will of course require further support and ideas. I will be sending out some more comprehensive information regarding this in the new year, however just wanted to give you a date for your diary if you would like to join the summer fair planning committee. We will be meeting at school on Monday 20th January at 7pm to come up with a formal plan to get the event off of the ground. Thank you to those who attended this morning and gave their input!

Our Bucket Fillers this week devoured Mrs Grizzell’s Victoria sponge cake, it was also highly commended by staff at break time, as they feasted on the leftovers! As always I feel very privileged to spend time with pupils who encapsulate and portray positive behaviours in and around our school. I feel very lucky to be able to spend some time sharing a treat and conversation with those pupils every week. This week saw my first return visitor, which is shows me how much of a positive role model some pupils are within our community. Well done to the following children this week:

N- Florence    R- Autumn     Y1- Mina     Y2- Jamila     Y3- Maya     Y4- Jacob     Y5- Sonny     Y6- Johnny

This week we had one person who was elevated to Rock Star status, and that was Noah (Y4), well done on this fantastic achievement! Also working hard on Numbots this week to move up levels were William (Y1), Olivia (Y2) and Joshua (Y1), well done to them for their commitment to improve themselves in their home learning.

I handed out 4 Headteacher’s Awards this week, each for a different reason. Firstly I had a return visitor from last week, and someone who has really been committed to their own academic development recently, and that was Sonny (Y5). I am really proud of him for his attitude to learning! He has been working hard in developing his reading skills recently and has made fantastic progress with this. There has been lots of great writing in Year 5 this term and Ronnie is the latest in a line of Year 5 writers that have been to see me. His descriptive piece about a soldier in World War II was brilliant, and we were all treated to a section of it in assembly. As I mentioned last week, there has been some really engaging learning in Years 3 & 4 with their creative curriculum topic of The Ancient Egyptians this term. Max (Y3) brought me his Canopic jar with a jackal head that he had made from Modroc. He also provided me, and the rest of the school, with some information about Horus, the Egyptian god of the sky. My final award went to another hard worker this week, and that was William (Y1) for his illustration of a hanukiah (a candle holder that Jews use during the festival of Hanukah). It was very carefully produced and well thought out. Well done to all of you!

You may have heard that we are holding our own general election here at Shephalbury Park. A group of committed and determined Year 6 pupils have split themselves into four of the main political parties and are campaigning around school to try and win the votes of other pupils. They have researched key policies and manifesto promises and shared them in assembly this week with the whole school. They will be following this up with a live debate in next week’s assembly, before we set up our polling station on election day next Thursday. I would like to say a huge well done, and I’m proud of each of the pupils involved in this. They are giving up their own time (at school and home) to further their learning and understanding of politics, and contributing to developing the rest of our school community’s understanding of democracy.

Finally, I would like to just draw your attention to the letter that was circulated via email (and on paper for years 1 & 2) today. It details the changes to some of the staffing arrangements in January. If you didn’t receive a copy of the letter, a link is below for you to download it.

I hope that you all enjoy your weekend,

Mr Ben Conway

Friday 29th November

The end of another week and it is starting to feel a little festive around the school. Our Christmas lights are going up, as is the tree and decorations, and the sound of Christmas songs are floating around the corridors as pupils prepare for their shows and carol singing. Despite all of this there is still lots of good quality learning happening all over the place. I was treated to a fantastic rendition of the three times table from Year 4, seen some Canopic jar creations in Year 3, heard some fabulous cross-curricular letter writing in Year 5 and been shown lots of brilliant maths work utilising many different methods and representations from across the school.

We are constantly striving for ways to improve and develop the teaching and learning that happens at Shephalbury Park, however I am extremely proud of the effort and commitment from all of the staff in providing such engaging and developmental learning in all areas of our school. Thank you!

As I mentioned in last week’s post, there are a lot of events coming up over the next few weeks. There is a comprehensive list included in the newsletter which has been emailed out, and can also be downloaded from the link below. There will be more details coming out to you regarding the individual events as and when appropriate. If you have any questions or queries regarding any of these, then please contact the school office.

Headteacher’s Awards; As I mentioned earlier, I have been fortunate enough to see some many examples of great work this week. Year 2 are clearly benefiting from their current approach to maths. This week I have seen Damon, for working independently on subtraction, and Uzma and Phoebe for utilising a range of pictorial representations in their work. Also this week Sonny, Year 5, has made some great progress in his work on factors. Well done to these mathematicians!

I have also been treated to some wonderful English work. Tommy in Reception has been independently applying his phonic knowledge of the ‘igh’ trigraph in his writing. Another phonics superstar this week was in Year 1, Freddie independently used his phonic knowledge to write a range of words correctly. My final Headteacher’s award this week went to Konnor in Year 5. They have learnt a lot over the course of the term about World War II, and have used this knowledge across the wider curriculum. This week Konnor produced a well-considered letter from the viewpoint of a soldier in the war. It was great to listen to, and something he should be really proud of. A huge well done to all of the recipients this week!

This week Miss Lucas supplied M&M surprise cupcakes for our Bucket Fillers. As always they were devoured by the children, thank you for the yummy treats! It gives me great pleasure every week to spend time with children who are making such positive choices in and around our school. Having pupils conduct themselves in this manner contributes so much to all aspects of our school that it benefits us all. It makes me feel very privileged and proud to be a part of this learning community. Thank you and well done to all of them!

N- Theo    R- Lenny B     Y1- Bella     Y2- Leanna     Y3- Ruby     Y4- Amelia     Y5- Scarlett     Y6- Archie

There were two people elevated to Rock Star status this week, and they both come from the same family! A huge well done to Bella (Y2) and Liam (Y4) for working so hard to achieve this status.

Also this week the following children were awarded Numbots certificates for completing various stages; Raegan (Y3), Jamila, James, Ben and Anjolaoluwa (all Y2), a huge well done to all of them.

Finally, another reminder about the coffee morning that you are all invited to on Friday 6th December at 9am. This will be a chance to build on the initial conversation that I had with parents in October, and will be used to discuss some ideas around forming/re-forming a parent teacher association. If you are able to attend then please let me know via the contact box below. If you are unable to attend, but would like to contribute some ideas or have an interest in taking on a role in a potential PTA then please also let me know through the contact box.

Wishing you all an enjoyable weekend with your families,

Mr Ben Conway

Parent Coffee Morning

Please let me know if you will be attending the coffee morning on Friday 6th December. If you can't make it but would like to contribute then please send you contribution in the message box below.

Friday 22nd November

The end of a chilly week here, and it looks like we could be in for a wet weekend! As always there has been loads of great things happening in and around school. Years 3 and 4 had a fantastic Egyptian day this week, including a range of activities and a special escape room. Thank you to Mr Klein and Mr Rust for organising a great day for the children.

As I’m sure you will all be aware, there are a lot of events up and coming during the next month. The key dates have been in the newsletters on a monthly basis, and we I will ensure that a comprehensive list of dates is circulated with the next newsletter in the next week or so. If you are unsure about the arrangements for any of the events, then please contact the school office after they have been circulated.

I have been treated to a handful of visitors this week each bringing me their work for a Headteacher’s Award. Liam in year 4 was so inspired by his RE learning about Hinduism that he went home and created an amazing Rangoli pattern. Elliot and Noah Sp, in year 5, both produced some fantastically descriptive descriptions of a setting, based on a short film that they watched. The film linked to their learning on World War II, and perfectly encapsulated the images of soldiers disembarking their boats under enemy fire. And finally this week I saw Caleb in year 2. He had worked incredibly well to independently produce a story map to retell a mixed up version of Little Red Riding Hood, where The Big Bad Wolf was the victim and Little Red Riding Hood was the villain. Well done to all of these children, I am really proud of you all!

Our bucket fillers this week were treated to Mrs Lewis’ jammy heart biscuits. They all went down an absolute treat with the children! Each and every one of these pupils has been a positive role model around the school, consistently demonstrating the values that we expect of our pupils throughout the week at school. Thank you and well done to all of them!

N- Poppy    R- Molly     Y1- Fredrico     Y2- Kyrillos     Y3- Maya     Y4- Archie     Y5- Olivia     Y6- Emily

Also this week there were plenty of Numbots and Times Table Rockstars certificates to give out. Well done to all of those children in years 1 & 2 to have successfully moved up levels in the last couple of weeks. We also awarded certificates to our biggest individual contributors during last week’s national challenge, they were Owen (y4), Ben (y2) and our biggest individual contributor Dennis (y5). Our final certificate was for Abigail (y6) who achieved the coveted status of Rock Star! A brilliant achievement, well done.

Finally, I would like to remind you that I will be holding a coffee morning on Friday 6th December at 9am to discuss some ideas around forming/re-forming a parent teacher association. If you are able to attend then please let me know via the contact box below. If you are unable to attend, but would like to contribute some ideas or have an interest in taking on a role in a potential PTA then please also let me know through the contact box.

I hope that you all enjoy a great weekend,

Mr Ben Conway

Friday 15th November

This week has seen a wide variety of things going on in and around the school. We have spent time focusing on Anti-Bullying week and doing some work on recognising what makes us unique, and how we should be treating others. We based some of our learning on the book ‘Only One You’, with everyone creating their own individual pebble design.

We have also marked our support for 2 charitable causes this week, Odd Socks Day (for the Anti-Bullying Alliance) and a ramble in the park (for Children in Need). There has been a fantastic array of odd socks and Pudsey paraphernalia around school today, and everyone thoroughly enjoyed our ramble around Shephalbury Park. It was great to see everyone chatting, exercising and having a good time! A special mention needs to go to our Year 6 pupils, who were all buddied up with Year 1 pupils for our ramble. They stuck with them the entire way round, made good conversation and supported them on the walk. They all displayed the qualities and values that we expect of our pupils in being positive role models and good citizens. I am very proud of each of them for their conduct this morning.

This week I have awarded one Headteacher’s Award, this was to Ruby in Year 3 for a brilliantly written tanka (a 31 syllable poem), about being yourself. Not only was it well written, but she performed her poem exceptionally well!

Our bucket fillers this week were treated to Mrs McKenzie’s jam doughnut muffins. The children all agreed that they were amazing, and there wasn’t a crumb left. Each and every one of these pupils has been a positive role model around the school, consistently demonstrating the values that we expect of our pupils throughout the week at school. They were:

N- Olivia    R- Ottilie     Y1- Lilly     Y2- Seth     Y3- Kian M     Y4- Tommy     Y5- Noah Sp     Y6- Evie

I would like to say how nice it was to see many of you at our parent consultation evenings over the last couple of weeks. I hope that you found them useful to understand the progress that your child is making, and give you the opportunity to hear about what their next steps in learning are. As always we are keen to review our procedures and processes around the format and structure of the consultations. If you have some constructive feedback that you would like to share for consideration, please send it to me via the contact box below.

Parent Consultation Feedback

Finally, I would like to share some great news with you all, Mrs Levy is expecting her first child in the new year. I’m sure that you will all join me in wishing her and her husband the best of luck over the coming months.

I hope that you all enjoy a great weekend,

Mr Ben Conway

Friday 8th November

The end of our first week back, and my post today will be brief, as I have also sent out a newsletter today (click the link below to download a copy!)

As you will read in the newsletter we have had quite a few pupils representing our school with pride over the last few weeks. A special mention this week must go to those pupils who represented our school at the Table Tennis competition held this week. Many of our representatives were new to the sport, but they all achieved very creditable results. Our team of boys finished 4th out of 8, whilst our girls won bronze medals finishing 3rd! A fantastic achievement by all, well done.

If you want to read more about our sporting achievements, then why don't you follow the link to our sports blog:

https://www.shephalburypark.herts.sch.uk/sports-blog/

Hopefully you will recall the competition that we have been running to create a poster or factfile about an inspirational figure from black history, to support our work around Black History Month. There were some brilliant entries from pupils in all year groups across the school, and each entry has earned the pupils 2 house points. During our daily staff briefing this week, staff voted on which entry from each phase within the school should be the winner. It was an incredibly tough choice, however the winners were:

EYFS- Esme Munford

Y1&2- Nevaeh Griffiths

Y3&4- Amelia Quick

Y5&6 Johnny Satchell

Each of them have been awarded 5 house points and been bought a book of their choice.

Our bucket fillers this week were treated to some delicious bonfire cakes from Mrs Ramus (thank you!), they have demonstrated the values that we expected of our pupils throughout the week at school. They were:

N- Eleanor   R- Alfie   Y1- Josh   Y2- Elijah   Y3- Cade   Y4- Lewis   Y5- Ronnie   Y6- Ishraa

I have been visited by 6 pupils this week who were awarded Headteacher’s Awards for their commitment to furthering their academic learning. Angelika in year 5 has shown a real love for reading, especially at home. She records in her reading record every night and is making great progress because of this. Mina in year 1 was a super scientist this week, sorting plants and animals, and identifying the differences between them. And my final four recipients were from year 4, Kian T, Paddy, Raegan and Jessie-Mae have all been working hard with Mrs Grizzell to learn about and write their own Autumn haikus. Well done to them all!

A reminder that our friends at Longmeadow are hosting a fireworks display tonight. As well as the fireworks there will be a DJ, and food and drink available to purchase. If you are interested, please see the flier below.

Finally I would like to thank those people within the community that have registered us as their charitable cause at the local Co-op. We have been a part of the scheme for the last year, and have just had our final donation made to the school. Those people that have supported us have enabled us to receive over £3,700 from the community fund. These much needed funds will go towards supporting enriching the learning experiences that we can our community. A special thanks to Mrs Chandler for identifying this opportunity and registering us!

I hope that you all enjoy your weekend with your families,

Mr Ben Conway

Friday 25th October

As we come to the end of our first half term we have a lot to celebrate. I have been extremely pleased with the effort shown by so many to develop themselves by academically, personally and professionally. For this I need to particularly thank all of our staff for their ongoing commitment to improving our school and for the opportunities that they are providing our pupils.

Unfortunately this week we say goodbye to Mrs Ashby and Mrs Nazzari, both of whom are a part of our midday supervisory team. I would like to thank them for their hard work at our school and wish them luck in the future.

The last week has seen some of oldest pupils excel with their physical abilities. Last Friday our year 5 netball team won their first match of the year 10-0 against Trotts Hill, a fantastic start to the year! Additionally this week has seen the following year 5 & 6 pupils reach the expected swimming standard for primary aged pupils: Konnor, Noah Sp, Jack, Scarlett, Vinny, Dennis, Angelika and Sienna. Well done to you all, we are proud of you!

Today saw the finals of our Spelling Bee, the first of our house competition of the year. Each of the finalists had done incredibly well to reach this stage of the competition, and they all acquitted themselves incredibly well in front of a packed audience in the hall and received house points and a book of their choice each as a prize. Our winners were: Steffen & Olivia, Ephraim & Hamish, Ben & Riley, Joe & Ethan M, Lewis & Logan, Jack and Kai.
One of our key focuses this year is on the pride we take in presenting our written work across the school. Each class teacher has nominated a ‘Presentation Prince or Princess’ for a pupil who is either exceptional in all of their presentation, or who has made incredible progress this half term. Each winner was awarded 10 house points each, they were: Tia, Mckenzie, Roma, Melisa, Ava, Finley, Scarlett and Niamh.
Our bucket fillers this week were treated to some delicious treats from Mrs Gibson (thank you!), they have demonstrated the values that we expected of our pupils throughout the week at school. They were: Esme, Joy, Richard, George, Milly, Logan, Lily and Adrian.

I would like to thank those parents who attended, or contributed to, our coffee afternoon today. I found it very informative, and a great starting point for building on the work and opportunities that we currently offer for working together. I will send out some detailed information in the next newsletter.

Our friends at Longmeadow are hosting a fireworks display on Friday 8th November. As well as the fireworks there will be a DJ, and food and drink available to purchase. If you are interested, please see the flier below.

As we approach Armistice Day, the school will be selling poppies and other assorted items, in support of the Royal British Legion. Poppies would require a donation of 20p, whilst other items will be up to the value of £1. Items will be on sale in the stable at break time and lunch time from Monday 4th November to Friday 8th November. Please send any donations in a named, sealed envelope.

Finally I hope that you all get the opportunity to have a break over half term, and look forward to seeing you all when we return on Monday 4th November (hopefully with England as rugby world champions!).

Mr Ben Conway

Friday 18th October

We have once again come to the end of another rather damp week, however there have been many children working hard and brightening up our week!

I have spent the last couple of days on a learning journey myself, listening to and learning from some inspirational speakers at a conference. It is always important to remember that we are all learners regardless of age or experience, and I am thankful for the opportunities that learning offers us.

With that in mind I would like to remind you all that I will be holding a coffee afternoon (yes...there will be cake!) next Friday, 25th October from 2pm. As I would like this to be a focused opportunity to share ideas and views on our communications and parental involvement, this session will be for adults only (please do not bring smaller children). If you would like to contribute some ideas/opinions but are unable to attend then please share them via the contact box below, and I will add these into the conversation. I would also request that you let me know if you are going to come, you can do this by sending me your name in the contact box below, or by letting the school office know.

Parent Coffee Afternoon- communications and parental involvement

Please let me know if you are going to attend, or if you have some ideas/comments to add into the conversation

Mrs Cropley had the envious job of leading the Bucket Fillers’ Tea Party today for the 8 children who have embodied the bucket filling values throughout the week. This week, they were:

N- Lexi    R- Charlie    Y1- Joshua    Y2- Rosie    Y3- Max    Y4- Finley    Y5- Lily    Y6- Brooke

The pupils in Year 1 and 2 have thoroughly enjoyed their learning this half term, based on and around Scotland and Katie Morag. They have designed and created some fantastic tartan designs, through drawing, on the computers, and by paper weaving. This week four pupils who demonstrated some brilliant tartan work received Headteacher’s Awards, they were Rosie, Phoebe, Olly and Frederico.

Additionally this week, Times Table Rock Stars and Numbots have seen many of our children working hard to practice and embed these key skills in their maths learning.

The most improved in studio in the last week were: 1st Bella, 2nd Elijah, 3rd Olivia.

The most improved in studio since starting TTRS are: 1st Isabel, 2nd Crystal and 3rd Keira.

Alongside these children who had a good amount of children moving up levels in Numbots, with Ethan gaining 3 certificates!

Well done to everyone who has seen improvements this week, especially our winners...I am really proud of all of you!

I hope that you all have a dry and enjoyable weekend...here’s hoping that England can overcome Australia in the Rugby World Cup!

Black History Month Challenge

This month across the UK is during October, and we have had a series of assemblies looking at equal rights, and learning about some inspirational individuals from Black History.

With this in mind we have set up a challenge for pupils to complete over the next few weeks:

  • Choose an inspirational person from Black History (some examples are Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King Jr, Nelson Mandela, Jesse Owens)

  • Create a fact-file or poster about that person

  • Hand it in to the post box by Mr Conway’s office

  • Prizes/rewards for all pieces handed in

  • Closing date Wednesday  6th November

Friday 11th October

I hope that your week has been brighter than our current dreary weather, however that hasn't put a dampener on our pupils working hard throughout this week! I have the pleasure of being able to visit all of their classes regularly, and they are all immersed in some fantastic learning. I have been particularly impressed this week by the pupils in Nursery and Reception. Their interactions with each other, the resources in their classrooms, the staff and their lessons is great to see. They have all settled into life at Shephalbury Park really well, and we are all looking forward to their journey with us through our school!

Hopefully you will have seen the notices around advertising the travelling book fair. This is a great opportunity for you to enrich your children's lives further with some really lovely new books. If you haven't already visited it will be open in the hall after school today, and until Wednesday 16th October.

Today also sees the first of our competitive sporting fixtures, with a football match against Martins Wood, good luck to those taking part...I hope to report a positive result next week!

Thank you to those of you who have donated food or toiletries for our Harvest Assembly next week. If you are yet to do so, it isn't too late. Please bring any donations to the main office, or send them in with your children where they can take them to the office. All donations will be taken to a local food bank next week.

There have been a steady stream of children that have visited me throughout the course of this week to receive Headteacher's Awards, many of them for additional home learning. This has pleased myself and their teachers, as it demonstrates their desire to further their learning independently, and that they are enjoying the topics that they are learning about.

Teddy and Keeley in year 4 both took on additional home learning, Teddy with some brilliant hieroglyphics and Keeley some maths that she had found challenging at school this week. Another person who took on additional home learning was Miley in year 6, again she is consolidating her maths learning at home.

I have been a part of lessons in both years 5 & 6 this week, and their topic of World War 2 has engaged and inspired many of the pupils. Travis and Jamie (Y6) both used some excellent figurative language in their preparations for writing a poem, and Noah Sp and Jack (Y5) wrote some well balanced arguments  on the theme of evacuation. Finally this week was an award for Lenny in Reception, he has been thoroughly engaged in the dinosaur theme in his class, and wrote a shopping list of food to buy for the dinosaur.

As always I am incredibly proud of each of these children for receiving these awards, and they should all be proud of themselves!

This week has seen the introduction of Numbots for pupils in years 1 & 2, this game secures the childrens' knowledge of number bonds before moving onto further developing their times table knowledge with Times Table Rock Stars. As you can see from the picture above many of the children achieved level up certificates this week, well done to all of them. A special well done needs to go to William in year 1, who achieved 3 level ups this week, a fantastic achievement...keep it up!

Our Times Table Rock Star (TTRS) certificates this week were awarded for the best increase in correct answers, and we saw a couple of people that we have already seen for other TTRS certificates in previous weeks. Well done to the following children:

1st Liam (Y4), 2nd Bella (Y2), Ben (Y2)

And finally this week, my bucket fillers were in for a treat today...they had the choice of two amazing cakes supplied by Miss Gaston (see pictures). It is great to spend 15 minutes with these children every week, as it is so important that we recognise their positive contributions to being positive role models in the way that they conduct themselves in and around our school. This week's winners were:

N- Henry     R- Freddie     Y1- Pippa     Y2- Victor     Y3- Ava     Y4- Jamie     Y5- Andile     Y6- Travis

I hope that you all enjoy a lovely weekend, hopefully the weather will cheer us all up a bit!

Friday 4th October

I will open this week by saying 'Shana Tova!' to you all, as our children found out today this means good year in Hebrew. We have been immersed in a day of learning about Rosh Hashannah (Jewish New Year) today, we had a fantastic assembly from Rabbi Neil Janes, where he talked about some of the Jewish traditions at this time of year, and blew his shofar (ram's horn) for us. There has also been some Israeli dancing, card making, problem solving, paper mache and poetry writing among other things- and no festival would be complete without some sort of food, children had the traditional apple and honey to try! Thank you to all of our staff, especially Mrs Holman for facilitating a great day.

I have been particularly awestruck this week by 2 inspirational female athletes, Dina Asher-Smith and Katerina Johnson-Thompson, both of whom won World Championship gold medals. Their commitment, dedication, perseverance and drive to be the best that they can be should be an inspiration to us all!

I would like to share with you those children who have demonstrated some of those traits, as well as others, this week. Headteacher's Awards were given to William (Y1) for some excellent maths work, additionally Hobie (Y4) persevered with his maths and produced some fantastic work demonstrating his understanding of number. Steffen (R) showed me some incredible writing this week, he used his phonic knowledge to record a wide range of words. Finally this week was Ellis (Y4), he had researched and written about the Ancient Egyptians in his creative curriculum lesson. His work was detailed, and presentation superb!

Joining me at this week's Bucket Fillers' tea party, and enjoying Mrs Spiller's fantastic baking were:

N- Connie     R- Lilly     Y1- Frddie     Y2- Ethan     Y3- Sophia     Y4- Richie     Y5- Dennis     Y6- Kai

Also this week, our most accurate pupils on Times Table Rock Stars were:

1st Anjolaoluwa (Y2), 2nd George (Y2) and 3rd Keeley (Y4)

Well done to all of the children above, I am really proud of all of you!

Today we will also be sending out our second newsletter of the year via email. You can also download a copy of it just below. If you would like a paper copy, or some more information about the content of it, please feel free to come to the main school office and ask.

I hope that you have restful weekends, and that England's good form in the Rugby World Cup continues!

Friday 27th September

Well Friday has come around quickly again this week, and hasn't it been a great start for the England rugby team at the Rugby World Cup in Japan! Here's to hoping that they can keep it up!

As always we have some children celebrating their personal achievements today at school. I have been fortunate to award 4 Headteacher's Awards this week. Abigail in year 6 has produced some fantastic research at home around their topic of World War 2. This independent motivation to further her learning is fantastic to see. Anjolaoluwa in year 2 has been working hard in PE, making sure that he keeps himself and others safe at all times. Jacob in year 4 was awarded his for excellent maths work, counting on in 100s. Finally this week, Riley in year 2 worked hard on his understanding of sentence structures in class. Well done, I am proud of all of you!

This week's Bucket Fillers were fortunate to have Mr Klein's chocolate fridge cake for their Tea Party (I have included the recipe below if you would like to try it at home), these children have displayed the bucket filling values that we expect of our entire learning community, well done we are proud of you! They are:

N- Louis     R- Kyla     Y1- Charlie     Y2- Bella     Y3- Lewis     Y4- Noah     Y5- Samuel     Y6- Evie

One class that should be particularly proud this week is year 3, they were our best attenders with 99.3% last week, well done to them!

More children that we are proud of are the winners of this week's Times Table Rock Stars Challenge, last week Mrs Lewis challenged pupils to see who could earn the most coins this week. The following pupils were our top 3:

1st- Ben year 2

2nd- Bella year 2

3rd- Ethan year 3

The challenge for next week is to be the most accurate Rock Star...good luck!

This afternoon we will be holding a cake sale in aid of the Macmillan Big Coffee Morning. Please feel free to pick up a cake or two from the school hall at the end of the day and donate to a fantastic cause that supports so many families in their time of need. Cakes will range from 20p to 50p.

Next Friday I will be sending out a newsletter. There will be quite a bit of information in there about some of the bigger things that have been happening recently, and more about things that are coming up in the near future. Keep an eye out for it next Friday.

Finally I want to wish the Year 5 & 6 pupils on their residential trip this weekend a fun and enjoyable time away, I know how much the staff were looking forward to the trip, and I look forward to hearing about it when they return on Monday!

Wishing you all a restful and enjoyable weekend,

Mr Ben Conway

Friday 20th September

The end of another sunny week here at Shephalbury Park, and a lot for us to be positive and proud of!

You will receive paper copies of 2 important letters today, an updated home school agreement and a letter detailing the minimum expectations for home learning (years 1-6). I urge you to read them both carefully, and share them with your child. These two letters outline the high expectations that we should all have of each other, and how we expect each other to support our learning community.

Please sign the home school agreement, and ask your child to do the same, and return it to school by Friday 27th September

I was able to award this week's bucket fillers with certificates this week thanks to Amelia in Year 2. Her design was voted, by the senior leadership team, as the best, and it has been used to create the certificate that will be awarded for the rest of the year. Amelia was awarded 10 house points and chose 2 new books to take home and keep!

The bucket fillers that attended the tea party this week, and got to eat Mrs Levy's delicious chocolate cornflake cakes, were:

Nursery- Flynn

Reception- Jake

Y1- Harvey

Y2- Noorisha

Y3- Ella

Y4- Freddie

Y5- Holly

Y6- Madison

Well done to these children, and thank you for displaying all of the positive traits that we expect of our pupils!

A couple of things to round us off...I want to congratulate Reception class this week, as they were the only class in the school to achieve 100% attendance last week. This is a fantastic start for them, and we should all be striving to be here everyday. Also to be congratulated are Years 2, 3 & 6 for having no lates last week...keep it up!

And finally I wanted to pass on congratulations to Mr Gorman and his fiance Charlotte for their wedding this weekend from everyone in the Shephalbury community. We all hope that you have a fantastic day.

I hope that you all enjoy a restful weekend

Friday 13th September

Wow...we have been back for a full week and a half and it feels like we were never away!

There has been a lot going on across the school including children settling into the expectations of their new year groups, starting learning of their new topics, and welcoming our newest and youngest pupils to Nursery.

This week I have been very fortunate to award my first 3 Headteacher's Awards. Archie in Y3 was awrded for resilience and perseverance with his work when he found something tricky; Viktor in Y2 demonstrated some fantastic reasoning using manipulatives in his maths lessons; and Molly in Reception also demonstrated some brilliant maths skills with pictorial representations. Well done to these three children!

Today your child will be bringing home some information about our 'House Spelling Bee'. All children will be participating, and will earn points for their house team. Please support them to learn the words that they are expected to learn, there are some links on the information. There is also a copy of this information below.

This morning saw us congratulate our first 8 'Bucket Fillers' in assembly, and they joined me for a celebration tea. These children have contributed positively around the school in the past week in everything that they do, being kind, helpful, polite and helping others. We are all very proud of them, and I look forward to sharing tea with 8 more 'Bucket Fillers' next week.

Nursery- Rae

Reception- Eliannah

Y1- Amelia

Y2- Phoebe

Y3- Jenson

Y4- Ruby

Y5- Noah St

Y6- Abigail

Finally today I would like to celebrate a fantastic achievement for 3 more people, Ben Y2, Owen Y4 and Ethan Y3 were rewarded for being the highest scoring members of our learning community on Times Tables Rockstars since we began. This really does show that the hard work and practice pays off! It looks like we all have some work to do to catch them up over the course of this year.

I hope that you all have an enjoyable weekend!
