Welcome to Year 6!

I hope that everyone has had a restful summer break and are ready for lots more learning!

This term we start our new topic, The Victorians. As part of this topic, we will be travelling to The Royal Gunpowder Mills to explore what life was like in Victorian Britain and how changes to work, education, leisure and transport shaped the world we live in today. We will also be reflecting back in time in our English topic when writing a recount of our trip. Our guided reading book will be ‘Cogheart’ by Peter Bunzl.

As well as learning about The Victorians, we'll also be learning about light in Science with a focus on Isaac Newton and exploring online safety in computing. Additionally, there will be a chance for children to familiarise themselves with SAT questions during the autumn term to help build confidence. We also have our residential trip to look forward to!

Swimming commences on Thursday 8th September. Make sure you bring your swimming cap, goggles, towel and dry underwear and come to school with your swimming costume underneath your school uniform.

Spellings and reading continue this term. Reading will be 3 times a week alongside a spelling test and both will be due in on Friday. This year, Shephalbury are introducing a new online programme to help prepare and recap topics taught in English and Maths called Mirodo, children will be given activities and deadlines throughout the week using this programme. Therefore, there will be no expectation for children to complete TT Rockstars for 30 minutes a week, but they can get involved in the school competitions. As the term progresses, there will be additional homework as we revise topics reading for the SATs.
