Year 5
Welcome to our Year 5 class page
WOW Time!
On a Friday afternoon, the children will have the opportunity to share anything special they have done outside of school with the rest of the class. This may be extra learning they have done at home, a special day out, a certificate or medal of achievement or something else that is deemed to be a WOW moment. Please ensure your child lets Mrs Spiller know by Friday morning at the latest if they have something to show or something to tell. You are also welcome to email any pictures or videos to support your child’s WOW time to the Year 5 email address.
We can’t wait to see your WOW moments.

Our learning in Year 5...
English
We are currently looking at Cinquain poems in English. Today, we performed a poem of our choice demonstrating our understanding through intonation, tone and volume.
Easter Journey
We enjoyed visiting Longmeadow Evangelical Church this afternoon to attend an Easter Journey run by Bridgebuilders.
Coding Workshop
Today, we completed a coding workshop lead by STEM POINT. We used the BBC micro:bits to create programs for an alarm to stop a jewel thief!
STEAM workshop
We were really lucky to have a STEAM workshop provided by Mr Coates. We looked at the 'E' in STEAM and had to work in teams to create our own bridge structures out of spaghetti. We are going to test them on Friday to see if they can take the weight!
English
For the creative hook for our new unit of work, we worked in pairs to discuss, design and make a new object from an old plastic bottle.
Geography
We will be exploring the country of Greece this half term. In our first Geography lesson we used the Atlases to locate Greece and it's bordering countries. We then stretched ourselves by identifying other European countries and their capital cities.
Art
We have been exploring Ancient Greek Art. We focused on Olympic athletes, drawing these to show movement and proportion.
Year 5 & 6 trip to Stevenage Old Town
The Year 5 and 6 children had a great morning exploring Stevenage Old Town. They found lots of different features of old Victorian buildings and plotted these on their own maps, creating a key alongside this. They also had a go at creating a field sketch of the Holy Trinity Church.
Computing
In Computing this week, we worked together in pairs to create our own nature inspired vector drawings. We demonstrated some of the vector drawings skills we had previously learnt such as copying and pasting, creating shapes, fill colours and layering objects. What do you think?
Music
Our focus song in music is currently ‘Make you Feel My Love’ by Adele. The children have really enjoyed learning how to play the tune on the glockenspiels and have all done incredibly well. They were also lucky enough to have Miss Patti supporting them in the lesson who even sang the song while they played it!
English
In English this week we have been learning how to use descriptive language to describe settings and characters in order to make our writing more engaging for the reader. We shared our descriptions with a partner who then had to draw the setting and character based on the descriptions given.
