ARCHIVE Mr Conway's Blog 2021-2022

Friday 22nd July 2022

Well, what a scorching week we have had to end to 2021-2022 academic year! We are very fortunate to have air conditioning throughout the vast majority of our classrooms, and our EYFS learners used additional air conditioned spaces to keep cool.

Our Year 6 cohort have had a busy final week, playing football in a match against a staff team, and unfortunately losing, helping out with our younger learners, signing shirts and sharing some lovely songs and memories of their time at school in their leavers assembly. We wish them well and hope that their time at Shephalbury Park sets them on their way to achieve their hopes and dreams in the future.

We had our final Golden Ticket Award of the year in today’s assembly, with Phil’s question this week being ‘How can you keep yourself feeling safe if you are at home or out alone?’, see below for the winners:

Olivia Y2: ‘Tell a shopkeeper if you are in a shop’

Anjolaoluwa Y4: ‘By locking the doors if you’re inside or if you’re outside be with a friend’

Henry Y6: ‘I will not look at my phone, be careful of my surroundings and always be aware’

The end of term brings a couple of additional goodbyes…we wish Mrs Hart well as she moves on to another school from September. We also wish Miss Kenyon well as she leaves us on maternity leave for the birth of her first child!

This week saw use recognise Unicorns as our house winners for the term. They were well rewarded with ice creams, as chosen by our school councillors. Congratulations to them, and well done to everyone else in the other houses for for working hard to earn house points this term.

An end of year letter was circulated by email today, which has a couple of important updates and reminders for everyone regarding next year. Please make sure that you give it a read.

I handed out my final 2 Headteacher’s Awards of the year this week. Firstly was Bella (R), who is another one of our young learners who has made fantastic progress with her phonics recently. A huge well done to Bella…keep it up!

Secondly was William, also in Reception, for a book that he wrote and illustrated at home. The Adventure of Mr Strawberry, was a brilliant story and I absolutely loved the illustrations that accompanied it. Great work William…I look forward to reading more of your creations in the future!

And that brings me to the end of my final blog of the year. I hope that you all have a fantastic summer and look forward to seeing everyone back at school on Monday 5th September.

Friday 15th July 2022

Another warm week comes to an end, and my penultimate blog of the year is punctuated with new beginnings and happy endings for many around our school.

Year 6 returned from their residential trip to perform ‘Prexit’ to the school, family and friends with great aplomb. As I said at the evening performance on Wednesday, putting any performance together is hard work for those performing in it, but it is also an intense period of work for those adults directing and preparing for it. A massive well done to the cast and support team, as well as a huge thank you to Miss Cordner and Mrs Spiller for their work in producing and directing the show.

Yesterday saw our annual transition day take place with all classes meeting their new teachers and spending the morning in their new classes. There was a lovely buzz around school as everyone got to know the new expectations for September and learnt about their new teachers and classrooms.

We also had the opportunity to welcome some new members to our school community with our Reception new starters joining our current Nursery learners for the day. It was fantastic to meet them all and we look forward to welcoming them full time from September.

As I am sure that you are all aware, next week we have an amber weather warning for high temperatures on Monday and Tuesday. As a school we are incredibly fortunate as the vast majority of our classrooms have air conditioning which will ensure that learners remain in cool temperatures throughout the day.

We will manage break and lunchtimes accordingly, using areas with shade and limiting the amount of time spent outside. Please ensure that your children have a hat, water bottle and sun cream applied. If they wish to wear PE kit to keep cool then please feel free to do so.

We will be collecting in reading and library books over the next week, and will not be issuing new ones until the new year. Please ensure that you send back any that you may have at home to enable us to be prepared for redistribution in September.

We are delighted to let you know that Stevenage Football Club Foundation will be providing a multi-sport camp at Shephalbury Park throughout the summer holidays. As you will know, we work closely with the team at SFCF throughout the year and our learners are familiar with many of the coaches through our lunchtime and after school provision. The sessions are great value at £12 per day and all bookings are made through the online system via the link below. The password required for booking has been emailed and sent out via the school app:

This week saw Phil’s Golden Moment, rewarding all of our Golden Ticket winners from this half term. As is now customary, Phil celebrated with ice cream, sprinkles and an awful lot of chocolate sauce! It was a lovely to reward learners from across the school for their thoughtful answers and considerations. We’re already looking forward to our next one in the autumn term!

Phil Good’s question this week this week, once again, has been really well received and created some interesting discussions…‘How could you keep safe if there was a bee or wasp in the classroom?’

As always Mrs Dean and Mrs McKenzie were blown away with the quality and quantity of the answers being provided by learners in all year groups. The recipients of the Golden Tickets of their well thought out answers were:

Dominica YN: “You can say ‘Shoo!’ or ‘No, go away!’ Don’t kill bees because they get nectar and make honey and you can’t kill bees because they help flowers to grow stuff.”

Bella Y4: “You could just stay still and try not to fidget, like trying to smack it because you could be allergic and you might get stung. Just stay calm!”

Ezme Y5: “Just leave it alone because remember you are a giant compared to them, so imagine how they feel.”

Today our Bucket Fillers were treated to a slice of delicious chocolate cake! All of our Bucket Fillers have been positive role models and good citizens in their class. As always we discussed my weekly questions and reflected on our week of learning. A huge well done to the following children for being nominated by their teachers this week:

N: Stefan

R: Alfie

Y1: Lexie

Y2: Autumn

Y3: Richard

Y4: Jamila

Y5: Alessia

Y6: Finnley

As well as Bucket Fillers, in assembly we have handed our Shephalbury LEARNER certificates, shared the attendance data and had a look at the house point totals.

As always our staff have seen pupils from around the school working hard to demonstrate the 7 attributes that make up a Shephalbury LEARNER, reflect, solve, create, think, stretch, grow and risk through the lessons and activities that they have participated in. The children listed below have been nominated by their teachers for being Shephalbury LEARNERS this week, a huge well done to each and every one of them:

Nursery: Naayel- Think                                 Reception: Teddy- Create

Year 1: Olivia- Reflect                                               Year 2: Molly- Reflect

Year 3: Olly- Grow                                        Year 4: Phoebe- Reflect

Year 5: Max-Risk                                           Year 6: Isabel- Grow

This week I have handed out 2 Headteacher’s Award, both of which are for amazing work in phonics!

Both Sonny (R) and Matthew (Y1) have been working incredibly hard at developing and improving their phonic knowledge. This has resulted in both of them making fantastic progress in recognising graphemes, using them in reading and applying them in some of their writing.

Super work from both of you boys…keep it up!

I hope that you all enjoy a fantastic weekend and hope that you can stay cool!

Friday 8th July 2022

A bright and sunny end to another busy week in the life of Shephalbury Park Primary School.

Our Year 6 class took a well deserved break from the rehearsals of their upcoming performance of ‘Prexit’ to spend a couple of nights away at Gilwell Park, the home of the Scouts. They had a fantastic time trying out many adventurous activities, playing games and spending some valuable time with their friends. The pictures on the Gilwell blog show how much fun they have all had!

A special mention must also go to our Year 6 learners who didn’t attend the residential…they have been excellent role models for the rest of the learners around school. They have led activities, read stories and planned games for others superbly well and we are proud of their contribution this week.

A huge thank you to Mrs Cropley, Miss Cordner and Mrs McKenzie for leading the trip.

Today you will receive your child’s annual report, which summarises their achievements from the year and links their learning behaviours to our Shephalbury LEARNER attributes. Also inside the reports are official reported data for learners in Reception, Year 1 (phonics), Year 2 (KS1 teacher assessments), Year 4 (multiplication checks) and Year 6 (KS2 SATs). We know how hard all of our learners have worked across the course of the year and these reports celebrate this for many.

Within the report envelope, you will also find our staffing arrangements for September. On Thursday next week, all of our classes will get to spend the morning with their new teacher and TA to get to know each other a little better and set some expectations for when they join their new year groups. These will take place in their new classroom. On this day, we ask that all children all dropped off to their new class teacher on the field at drop off time, to be taken in together to their new class.

We have already welcomed many of our new Nursery cohort for a stay and play session last week, and look forward to them joining us again next.

We know and appreciate that transition can caused many mixed feelings for children and this displays in many different ways. We have already begun transition activities for quite a few learners across the school. Please support your child by having positive conversations regarding their transition and speak to Mrs McKenzie or Mrs Dean if you have any concerns that you feel may be effecting your child.

In line with the national trend at the moment, we are seeing an increase in COVID cases again around school. While we have maintained all of our enhanced hygiene procedures around school, I would ask that you remain vigilant with your child/ren should they become unwell. The latest guidance is as follows:

‘If a child or young person has a positive COVID-19 test result they should try to stay at home and avoid contact with other people for 3 days after the day they took the test, if they can. After 3 days, if they feel well and do not have a high temperature, the risk of passing the infection on to others is much lower. This is because children and young people tend to be infectious to other people for less time than adults.

Children and young people who usually go to school, college or childcare and who live with someone who has a positive COVID-19 test result should continue to attend as normal.’

Phil Good’s question this week this week, once again, has been really well received and created some interesting discussions…‘How could you keep yourself feeling ok when you are starting a new class or school?’

As always Mrs Dean and Mrs McKenzie were blown away with the quality and quantity of the answers being provided by learners in all year groups. The recipients of the Golden Tickets of their well thought out answers were:

Sophie YR: “Stay happy when you go to school.”

Roma Y3: “Take a breath, believe in yourself and do your best!”

Anjolaoluwa Y4: “I’d recommend going with the newest children so you can grow and bond together, but also learn from those who have been there the longest.”

Today our Bucket Fillers were treated to some delicious chocolate donuts! All of our Bucket Fillers have been positive role models and good citizens in their class. As always we discussed my weekly questions and reflected on our week of learning. A huge well done to the following children for being nominated by their teachers this week:

N: Maison

R: Isabelle

Y1: Poppy

Y2: Kyla M

Year 5: Jenson- Create                                                         Year 6: -

This week I have handed out 4 Headteacher’s Award, most of which went to Shephalbury LEARNERS in Year 1!

First was Daniel (Y1) for his excellent commitment to continue his learning at home. He has been inspired by his writing during English lessons at school and continued his writing during his own time, re-writing his own version of the story that Year 1 have been learning about. Super work Daniel…well done!

Also in Year 1, and for a very similar reason, was Elliot, who has independently been completing a range of home learning tasks. He has been writing and practicing maths as, in his words, he finds learning fun and wants to do as much as he can! A super attitude to have…keep it up Elliot!

Poppy (Y1) has been working incredibly hard this week, not only did she attend my Bucket Filler’s tea party earlier today, but she also received a Headteacher’s Award for some excellent writing. Poppy described how she had written the problem for her story, edited it, improved it and re-written. We read it together and it was brilliant to see how she had improved the language choices that she had made. Awesome work Poppy!

Finally this week was Teddy (Y6), who has been working incredibly hard and excelling in all of the rehearsals for the Year 6 production of Prexit.

I hope that you all enjoy a fantastic weekend!

Friday 1st July 2022

After the excitement and energy that Sports Week brought last week, we have returned to our regular curriculum learning this week.

The week kicked off with an assembly from our friends at the Dogs Trust. They came and spoke to us all regarding how we can be safe around dogs and how we can ensure that we keep dogs safe and treat them well. We also found out about some of the work that they do to help dogs that are in need. The assembly was followed up by some workshops to support us in learning some more.

To find out more about Dogs Trust follow the link below:

On Tuesday and Wednesday this week, we welcomed our new Nursery and Reception cohorts and parents to a welcome session. It was lovely to see lots of familiar faces, as well as some new ones who will be joining our learning community from September. We discussed transition and the children had a chance to meet some of their classmates in their new classrooms. We look forward to welcoming them all again over the next few weeks as they join us for some additional transition sessions during the day.

Whilst we have already begun some transition activities across the school already, we will all be having our transition day on 14th July. During the day, classes will spend time with their new teachers in their new classrooms, getting to know and understand the expectations for their new year group. It will also give them a chance to start building some positive relationships with the staff that they will be working with from September. More information regarding this and the staffing arrangements for September will be sent out with reports next Friday.

Mrs Dean held a ‘Coffee & Chat’ session this week, which focused on the subject of supporting your child/ren with transition. Thank you to those who attended, we hope that you found the information useful. We will be holding a later session on the same theme next Monday at 5.30pm at school for anyone who would like to attend.

We have seen some amazing sporting success this week, with our Year 5 netball team. Not only have they won their league over the course of this season, but they also won the local tournament held at Marriotts School this week. A fantastic achievement for the girls, and much credit to Mrs McKenzie for coaching them throughout the year!

Our 100 Day Reading Challenge ended a couple of weeks ago, and today we selected the three winners from across the school from those learners who showed a real commitment and enjoyment of this challenge. Each person who completed the challenge was awarded 20 house points, with the winners also being bought a book of their choice.

Phil Good’s question this week this week, once again, has been really well received and created some interesting discussions…‘Can you choose not to be sad?’

As always Mrs Dean and Mrs McKenzie were blown away with the quality and quantity of the answers being provided by learners in all year groups. The recipients of the Golden Tickets of their well thought out answers were:

Vinnie Y2: “Yes because you can make yourself think about a happy thought instead of a bad thought.”

Kian M Y5: “Yes if you have a friend by your side to make you laugh.”

Amelia Q Y6: “No you can’t as it is a natural emotion and it comes naturally at any time!”

Today our Bucket Fillers were treated to some delicious chocolate swiss roll! All of our Bucket Fillers have been positive role models and good citizens in their class. As always we discussed my weekly questions and reflected on our week of learning. A huge well done to the following children for being nominated by their teachers this week:

N: Lola

R: Melissa G

Y1: Harvey

Y2: Steffen

Y3: William

Y4: Bethany

Y5: Alex

Y6: Liam R

Year 3: Maia- Think                                      Year 4: Bella- Reflect

Year 5: Max- Risk                                          Year 6: Noah- Create

This week I have handed out 2 Headteacher’s Award, both for some incredible artwork! Melissa G and Oliver, both in Reception, were inspired by pictures by artist Mahfuzur Rahman and recreated their own versions. They very carefully applied watercolour paints in blocks and Melissa added some detailed outlining using oil pastel once it had dried. I think that we will all agree that these are both fantastic efforts and well worthy of Headteacher’s Awards. Super artwork Melissa and Oliver…well done!

I hope that you all enjoy a fantastic weekend!

WOW! What an amazing sports week we have at Shephalbury Park. It has had everything from tug of war to poetry and much more in between.

We kicked off the week with a visit from former Commonwealth gold medal winner Adrian Patrick who talked to us about the hard work and commitment that it takes to be a top level athlete. He linked his success to having a growth mind set and applying yourself even if you face knock backs in the process of doing something…just like our Shephalbury LEARNERS. He followed this with some fantastic sprint training sessions for us all and we got a chance to see his gold medal.

We also saw everyone compete in our field events day with jumps and throws to try and earn as many house points as we could for our team.

Tuesday saw us all using our hip action to perfect the art of hula hooping with John Parnell aka ‘The Hoop Guy’ (you may remember him from Britain’s Got Talent a few years ago!). He amazed us all with his amazing introductory assembly and set the tone for the day. Everyone got an opportunity to play some hoop-based games outside and most of us got the chance to learn and develop the right techniques for hooping and performing some other hoop tricks. Another amazing experience for us all!

Wednesday saw the return of the Shephalbury Sports Day and picnic lunch. This was my first experience of the traditional Shephalbury way, along with many of our learners and families…and what a morning we had! Everyone competed as hard as they could across the range of events on offer. They were all keenly contested and good sportspersonship was evident throughout the event. It culminated in a hotly contested tug of war competition for our upper key stage 2 learners which had a very intense ending.

Our family picnic topped off a wonderful, and rather warm and sunny, morning. It was brilliant to see so many parents, carers, grandparents and wider family members supporting this wholes school event.

We had two separate visitors with us on Thursday, a BMX demonstration and workshops for our Year 5 & 6 learners and martial arts workshops for Nursery to Year 4. We were wowed and amazed by the BMX tricks performed, especially the leap over 2 members of staff! Our older learners loved the experience of learning how to ride a BMX bike and practice over a few small ramps.

The rest of our year groups learned some stretches and basic moves associated with martial arts through their sessions. This was also thoroughly enjoyed, although we agree that we might all need some work on our flexibility!

Our week culminated with the fantastic spectacle of our Commonwealth Festival, celebrating our learning about different countries from around the Commonwealth over the last three weeks. From Nursery to Year 6, the singing, dancing and poetry was brilliant and a great way to showcase this learning for our community. Once again, this was fabulously well attended and we thank everyone for their support of the event.

It was also great to be able to share some of our regular celebration assembly features, Bucket Fillers and Shephalbury LEARNER certificates, with a bigger audience. The festival culminated in the announcement of the winners of Sports Week. The results of which you can see below:

Huge thanks go to all of our learners, staff and families for their work and support this week, and a special mention to Mr Rust for his organisation and dedication to providing a brilliantly immersive week of sport for everyone!

This week we chose our two winners of the design competition for Phil Good’s new friends, Bea Happy and Will Being. The winning designs are currently in the hands of a graphic designer who is basing his images of these new characters on the designs by Logan (Y6) and Ruby (Y6). We look forward to sharing these with you once they are complete!

Phil Good’s question this was ‘Is port all about winning? Is it ok to lose? What do you think about winning or losing?’

As always Mrs Dean and Mrs McKenzie were blown away with the quality and quantity of the answers being provided by learners in all year groups. The recipients of the Golden Tickets of their well thought out answers were:

Jaiden YR: “It is ok, do not give up, try again.”

George Y1: “It is ok to lose because at least you tried.”

Ruby Y6: “sport is not all about winning as if everyone won there would be no losers. It is ok to lose as it leaves room for improvement. I think it is good to win so that you know you have done something great, but it is good to lose so that you know you need more practice”

Today our Bucket Fillers were treated to some very tasty cupcakes! All of our Bucket Fillers have been positive role models and good citizens in their class. As always we discussed my weekly questions and reflected on our week of learning. A huge well done to the following children for being nominated by their teachers this week:

N: Kacper

R: Esmie

Y1: Ethan

Y2: Violet

Y3: Freddie

Y4: Olivia

What a glorious week we have had…topped off by today’s scorcher!

Our intrepid Year 3 & 4 learners were lucky to spend three days at Burwell House this week enjoying a wide range of outdoor activities including fire lighting, pond dipping and enamelling. Upon their return, there were many tired and weary faces, but everyone concurred that they had had the most fantastic time away.

A huge thank you to Mrs Cropley for organising and leading the trip, along with Mr Klein, Mrs Grizzell, Miss Stringer and Mrs Smith for supporting during the time away.

To find out more about the trip and to see some of the fabulous photos please follow the link below to see the Burwell page.

Our whole school theme on the Commonwealth has continued at a pace with classes across the school engaging in some engaging and informative learning about their focus country. Included in this learning is our preparation for our Commonwealth Festival next Friday. We look forward to sharing our performances with you all!

Today also signalled the first event linked to Sports Week, which begins next Monday, with our A-Life healthy living workshop sessions. Sports Week promises to be a great way for everyone to have some amazing experiences, meet a Commonwealth Games medal winner, learn some new skills and compete for their team at Sports Day and in other competitions.

We are really looking forward to the return of our traditional Sports Day and picnic next week as well. Full details were sent out last week, if you missed it please contact the school office. We look forward to seeing you there supporting and encouraging our school community!

In EYFS today, we also saw our Father’s (and Grandpa’s and Mother’s) Day stay and play, which was really well attended. It was great to see so many people coming in and engaging in a wide range of activities with their children in our EYFS environment. Everyone was also very lucky to be treated to an extra breakfast pastry or two!

Earlier on this week we welcome our Hertfordshire Improvement Partner, Carole Hinstridge, to school for our Summer review visit. The focus for this was our approach to teaching and learning of phonics and early reading, using the Little Wandle programme, which we have introduced this term. We had a brilliant turn out at our parent information sessions at the outset of our journey, and having reviewed our progress so far it is clear the impact that it is already having. Well done and thank you to all of our staff delivering the programme, the learners who read during the visit and to Mrs Cargill our English Leader for her hard work in developing and embedding our update approach to phonics and early reading. If you would like some more information about Little Wandle Phonics, please follow the link below:

Linked to reading, our 100 Day Reading Challenge has now ended. If your child has completed the range of challenges and recorded them every day over the course of the 100 day challenge, please ensure that they have returned their booklet to school by Wednesday 22nd June to Mrs Cargill, where they will be entered into a prize draw!

Phil Good’s question this week this week, once again, has been really well received and created some interesting discussions…‘Is a cloud in the sky or under the sky?’

As always Mrs Dean and Mrs McKenzie were blown away with the quality and quantity of the answers being provided by learners in all year groups. The recipients of the Golden Tickets of their well thought out answers were:

Vinnie Y2: “In the sky because the wind lifts it up.”

Laura Y4: “Both because it could be sunny and the clouds could be in the sky or it could be stormy and the clouds would cause fog.”

Miles Y6: “I would say under because the sky is a part of the atmosphere which is above the clouds. So clouds are under the sky.”

There was also an extra Golden Ticket awarded to James (Y4) for his excellent ideas for branding and merchandising for Phil Good.

Today our Bucket Fillers were treated to some amazing ice cream themed cakes very kindly provided by Mrs Spiller, thank you very much! All of our Bucket Fillers have been positive role models and good citizens in their class. As always we discussed my weekly questions and reflected on our week of learning. A huge well done to the following children for being nominated by their teachers this week:

N: Arthur

R: Lewis

Y1: Henry F

Y2: McKenzie

Y3: Emilia

Y4: Noorisha

Y5: Cade

Y6: Liam B

This week I have handed out 1 Headteacher’s Award, for some amazing Commonwealth learning by Lenny B (Y2). He took it upon himself to research 10 of the different Commonwealth countries at home, including Jamaica which his class are currently learning about. Great work Lenny, you are a fantastic Shephalbury LEARNER!

I hope that you all enjoy a fantastic weekend!

Friday 10th June 2022

I hope that you all enjoyed a break and the festivities that the extended Jubilee weekend afforded us all. We are back for the final half term of the year, and what a great start we have had with the start of our Commonwealth Learning theme across the school. There has been lots of excitement and interest around the countries each class is learning about, and this has already been supplemented by Mr McKenzie visiting EYFS today to talk about his native South Africa. Many thanks to him for his time and interesting artefacts that he showed us

The Commonwealth Games are being held this summer in Birmingham, and to celebrate this, along with recognising the Queen’s contribution to the Commonwealth, we are all learning about countries within it.

‘Commonwealth, also called Commonwealth of Nations, formerly (1931–49) British Commonwealth of Nations, a free association of sovereign states comprising the United Kingdom and a number of its former dependencies who have chosen to maintain ties of friendship and practical cooperation and who acknowledge the British monarch as symbolic head of their association.’

We kicked of the week by learning a bit about the function and purpose of the Commonwealth in assembly and found out which countries we would be learning about. Some of our learners were particularly good at identifying flags from different nations!

We finished the week with our fabulous Cultural Food Day, where everyone had the opportunity to share and try a wide range of food from around the world. There was some delicious food from all over the world, and everyone tried something new! A huge thank you to everyone who provided some tasters from their culture, it was all very gratefully received.

We had some of our learners represent us amazingly well at the Stevenage athletics finals this week, at Ridlins track. Everyone acquitted themselves admirably and there were a few stand out performances to mention:

Anjolouluwa- 3rd in 300m

Kyrillos- 2nd javelin

Phoebe- 3rd long jump & 2nd 50m sprint

Year 4- 2nd 50m shuttle relay & 2nd overall

Cade- 2nd 600m

These are all fantastic achievements, a huge well done to you all!

Phil Good’s question this week this week, once again, has been really well received and created some interesting discussions…‘If every time you laughed it knocked a minute off of your life, would you stop laughing?’

As always Mrs Dean and Mrs McKenzie were blown away with the quality and quantity of the answers being provided by learners in all year groups. The recipients of the Golden Tickets of their well thought out answers were:

Ezme Y5: “I wouldn’t stop laughing because if you don’t laugh, what’s the point in living? So I would just cut it down.”

Ella Y5: “No because I don’t know how many minutes of my life I have left.”

Today our Bucket Fillers were treated to a Penguin cake bar and juice. It was really nice today to welcome back some children for a repeat visit this year, demonstrating how hard they are working at being a positive role model and good citizen in their class. As always we discussed my weekly questions and reflected on our week of learning. A huge well done to the following children for being nominated by their teachers this week:

N: John-Boy

R: Alfie

Y1: Flynn

Y2: Daniel

Y3: Bella

Y4: Bethany

Y5: Ruby

Y6: Noah

As well as Bucket Fillers, in assembly we have handed our Shephalbury LEARNER certificates, shared the attendance data and had a look at the house point totals.

As always our staff have seen pupils from around the school working hard to demonstrate the 7 attributes that make up a Shephalbury LEARNER, reflect, solve, create, think, stretch, grow and risk through the lessons and activities that they have participated in. The children listed below have been nominated by their teachers for being Shephalbury LEARNERS this week, a huge well done to each and every one of them:

Nursery: Stefan- Think           Reception: Isabelle- Reflect

Year 1: Elijah- Stretch                   Year 2: Lilly- Growth

Year 3: Joshua- Stretch                    Year 4: Noorisha- Grow

Year 5: Cade- Reflect                         Year 6: Liam G- Grow

This week I have handed out 3 Headteacher’s Awards, for a couple of different reasons.

Firstly were Leanna (Y4) and Lillyanna (Y2) for some fantastic learning at home over the last few weeks. They took home the sunflower seed that everyone received before the Easter holiday, planted it and have been keeping a diary ever since. Each day they have been tending to them and measuring them on a weekly basis. Both girls have produced a lovely diary charting the growth of their sunflower. Great work girls!

My other award went to Isabel (Y6) for some more incredible charity work. During the break she was a part of a group that raised over £60,000 for Cancer Research UK by doing a muddy run. We are really proud of the charity work that you have been doing Isabel…keep it up!

I hope that you all enjoy a fantastic weekend!

Friday 27th May 2022

What a very regal end to the week we have had today. It was wonderful to see the effort that everyone went to in dressing up in their royal outfits and red, white and blue. Throughout the day learners participated in a range of Jubilee themed activities and enjoyed a picnic with their friends.

You may remember that last week our Reception class were on the trail of the Queen’s lost knickers. I am delighted to say that after searching high and low throughout the week Her Highness’ VIP knickers were discovered in the woodland area. The Queen was eternally grateful to the class and sent them all a very royal gold star each.

Our cake sale in support of Stand Up 2 Cancer earlier this week was a huge success. Well done and thank you to Ruby, Owen and Isabel (Year 6) for suggesting, planning and delivering a super cake sale. At the point of writing this they had raised £205.51 to donate to the charity. Thank you to everyone who bought cakes and supported this great charity. If you would like more information about the work of Stand Up 2 Cancer please follow the link below.

To finish off the charity event some of the staff entered a bake off today making a swiss roll technical challenge which was judged in assembly this afternoon. Thank you to our entrants; Mrs Gaston, Mrs Dean, Mrs McKenzie and Mrs Cargill. The winner- as chosen by our esteemed judges- was Mrs Cargill…congratulations!

I have shared over the last couple of weeks that there is an opportunity to share some opinions and have some discussions to help inform our understanding of our current and future practices.

The key foci for this meeting will be our Mental Health and Pastoral support and home learning.

Please indicate via the link below if you would like to attend this group on Monday 13th June at 6.30pm. If you are unable to attend but would like to share an opinion on either of these subject areas for consideration within the discussions, there is an opportunity to do so as well by following the link.

When we return after the half term break the whole school will be engaging in a learning theme about the Commonwealth. Classes will be looking at different countries from across the Commonwealth and learning about many different aspects of the culture and lives of those from around the world. To enrich this learning further we will be holding a couple of special events. Firstly on Friday 10th June we will be holding a Cultural Food Day, where we are inviting everyone to bring in food from their home culture to share with the rest of the school. A letter regarding this has already been sent home.

We are also inviting parents and carers to come to the culmination of our Commonwealth learning at our Commonwealth Festival on the afternoon of Friday 24th June, where learners from all classes will be performing something based on their learning throughout the topic. A letter with final details of this event will be sent out after the half term break.

On Wednesday, the Year 3 and Year 4 football team took part in the junior tournament at Bedwell school. They lost the first game 1-0 to an unlucky goal after a great double save from Ben. They drew the next two games 1-1, with George B and Billy-Joe scoring one each. We won the final game 2-0 thanks to goals from George and Billy-Joe again. The whole team played wonderfully and were a credit to our school. Well done to everyone who took part!

Our Year 5 & 6 football team won their final match of the season least week 3-0, leaving them as runners up in their league. Well done to all of the players that represented the school in this team throughout the year.

Phil had his Golden Moment this week for all of the worthy winners from throughout this half term…they were treated to ice creams!

Phil Good’s question this week this week, once again, has been really well received and created some interesting discussions…‘I have been feeling lonely and need a friend, can you think of a good wellbeing name for them?’

Once again both Mrs Dean and Mrs McKenzie were blown away with the quality and quantity of the answers being provided by learners in all year groups. The recipients of the Golden Tickets of their well thought out answers were:

Richard Y3: Bea Happy

Mina Y3 & Ben Y4: Will Being

Following on from this week’s question, Phil is running a half term competition to draw one of either of his new friends, Will Being or Bea Happy. The winning illustrators will win a special prize and we will create a life sized image of their character.

Phil also features with his wellbeing update in our inclusion newsletter, which is available below, and is packed full of information about things happening in and around school and the wider community.

Today our Bucket Fillers were treated to a very royal Victoria sponge cake made by Mrs Spiller…it looked and- I am reliably informed- tasted absolutely delicious! It was really nice today to welcome back some children for a repeat visit this year, demonstrating how hard they are working at being a positive role model and good citizen in their class. As always we discussed my weekly questions and reflected on our week of learning. A huge well done to the following children for being nominated by their teachers this week:

N: Ivy

R: Felicity B

Y1: Elliot

Y2: Autumn

Y3: Ali-May

Y4: Ben

Y5: Dylan

Y6: Ellis

As well as Bucket Fillers, in assembly we have handed our Shephalbury LEARNER certificates, shared the attendance data and had a look at the house point totals.

As always our staff have seen pupils from around the school working hard to demonstrate the 7 attributes that make up a Shephalbury LEARNER, reflect, solve, create, think, stretch, grow and risk through the lessons and activities that they have participated in. The children listed below have been nominated by their teachers for being Shephalbury LEARNERS this week, a huge well done to each and every one of them:

Nursery: Dominica- Reflect                  Reception: Teddy- Create

Year 1: George- Reflect                    Year 2: Freddie- Stretch

Year 3: Tyler- Grow                     Year 4: Seth- Stretch

Year 5: Ava- Create                     Year 6: Isabel- Grow

This week I have handed out 8 Headteacher’s Awards, for a range of different reasons.

Jaxson and Felicity B (YR) were both the lucky recipients of the Bedtime bags last week. The bag contains some delicious hot chocolate, biscuits, books and a cuddly toy to share with their family over the weekend. Both of them had a great time with the bag, and wrote about what they enjoyed. Super writing from both of them…well done!

Another member of our Reception class who has been working incredibly hard on their writing is Alfie. His independent application of his phonics, teamed with his improved handwriting has led to him being given a Headteacher’s award this week…keep it up Alfie!

The next award went to someone for their efforts within our community. Poppy (Y1) has been getting upset with the amount of rubbish that is littering the lanes and paths around Shephalbury Park. She has been out litter picking and disposing of it in the bin, becoming a real eco-warrior! Well done Poppy, we are proud of you!

Leo (Y2) has been recognised this week for his excellent writing and use of story language in his development of the story of George and the Dragon. Super work Leo!

And finally this week are Ruby, Owen and Isabel (Y6) who came up with the idea, planned and put on the cake sale this week, raising over £200 for charity. This really is a wonderful thing to have done and we are really proud of all of you!

I hope that you all have a great half term and look forward to seeing everyone back at school on Tuesday 7th June!

Friday 20th May 2022

After a wet end to the week we have made it to the weekend. As ever there has been a lot going on around the school this week…

Our youngest learners in EYFS have been investigating an issue for The Queen, who has lost her knickers! They have had some help from the police who have visited them this week with a van and equipment which may help them with their search. They even had a very special video call from ‘The Queen’ whilst she is at home at Buckingham Palace. This has inspired lots of role play and writing in the classroom, resulting in some fantastic posters around school. I know that they would really appreciate everyone’s help, so please keep an eye out for The Queen’s knickers!

Thank you to Mr Kennedy and Miss Collard for giving up their time to visit and enrich the learning for our children.

Year 1 enjoyed a visit from Stevenage Sporting Futures on Wednesday who introduced them to Active Maths. Everyone had a great time being active and using their maths skills in the activities.

We are approaching the end of our 100 Days of Reading Challenge which we began on World Book Day. A big well done to everyone who has completed a challenge every day since then. Saturday 11th June is day 100 and the final day of our reading challenge. Once all the challenges are complete, please return the record card to your class teacher by Wednesday 15th June. Everyone who completes the challenges will receive a certificate and will be entered into the prize draw to win a book of their choosing.

Last week I shared that there is an opportunity to share some opinions and have some discussions to help inform our understanding of our current and future practices.

There are a couple of notable out of school achievements that are very deserving of being recognised in this my blog this week.

Firstly Tommy (Y6) who has been representing the Stevenage Schools District team throughout the course of this academic year:

Tommy was part of the Stevenage Schools District team who played in the Lamex Tournament on Saturday. Completing against some tough teams and coming back from behind to win on a few occasions. Stevenage Schools won the tournament lifting the trophy high and proud. All the players showed a great work ethic & togetherness. Everyone is so proud of the team who represented Stevenage with pride.

We are really proud of your achievement as well Tommy…well done!

Secondly is Elijah (Y4), who has been taking part in The Royal Jubilee Virtual Challenge. The Royal Jubilee Virtual Challenge is a 500-mile route visiting all 5 of the Queen’s residencies in the UK and more Royal highlights. Elijah has been working hard and has completed this mammoth endurance task over the course of the last 6 weeks. This is another brilliant achievement…Well done Elijah!

Phil Good’s question this week this week, once again, has been really well received and created some interesting discussions…‘If anyone had an argument, how could they sort it out?’

Once again both Mrs Dean and Mrs McKenzie were blown away with the quality and quantity of the answers being provided by learners in all year groups. The recipients of the Golden Tickets of their well thought out answers were:

Esmie YR: “One person could stop and take the other person’s idea.”

Alfie T Y2: “Walk away, calm down and tell a teacher.”

Noorisha Y4: “They could tell a trusted adult or walk away from it and go to the Phil Good Bag.”

Hannah Y5: “They could say sorry and say what they have done wrong and try to be nice. You would need a little break from them if they were really rude. Try to forget about it. You can talk to someone about it.”

Today our Bucket Fillers were treated to their choice of swiss roll or angel cake and juice. It was really nice today to welcome back some children for a repeat visit this year, demonstrating how hard they are working at being a positive role model and good citizen in their class. As always we discussed my weekly questions and reflected on our week of learning. A huge well done to the following children for being nominated by their teachers this week:

N: Emily

R: Jaxson

Y1: Elijah

Y2: Lenny B

Y3: Amelia

Y4: Shay

Y5: Sophia

Y6: Jacob

As well as Bucket Fillers, in assembly we have handed our Shephalbury LEARNER certificates, shared the attendance data and had a look at the house point totals.

As always our staff have seen pupils from around the school working hard to demonstrate the 7 attributes that make up a Shephalbury LEARNER, reflect, solve, create, think, stretch, grow and risk through the lessons and activities that they have participated in. Year 3: Sereny- Solve                        Year 4: Kyrillos- Create

Year 5: Skye- Grow               Year 6: Archie- Grow

This week I have handed out 2 Headteacher’s Awards, both for different reasons.

Sophie (YR) came to me this week after her turn with the ‘Bedtime Bag’ last weekend. In EYFS learners are taking it in turn to take the bedtime bag home over the weekend to enjoy the stories and goodies that it has inside. Sophie really enjoyed her turn and it inspired her to write about her experience. Super writing and enthusiasm for learning Sophie…keep it up!

The second award was also for a member of our Reception class, Daniel was nominated by Miss Martin for a couple of reasons. Firstly he has been applying himself to his learning really well recently and showing many of the attributes of a Shephalbury LEARNER. As well as this he produced a great retelling of the Pirates Next Door Story independently last week. We are proud of you Daniel…well done!

I hope that you all enjoy a fantastic weekend!

A sunny way to end the week, and what a week it has been, especially for our Year 6 cohort. After two academic years with no SATs, they have returned in 2022 and the learners in our school have applied themselves well throughout the week. Our Shephalbury LEARNER attributes have been on show for many, with their determination to try their hardest. Well done to them all, and to the staff members who have worked hard to support them through the trials and tribulations of this period.

There are many things for our Year 6 cohort, along with the rest of the school to look forward to over the coming weeks and months. Below is a list of dates and events that will be taking place during the rest of the term, further details will communicated with you prior to each event.

I shared last week in my blog that we would be recognising Mental Health Awareness Week, learning about loneliness and how to support ourselves and others in overcoming it should be find ourselves lonely. Phil Good has been getting himself involved and set up his own Phil Good Area on the stable, to help our learners to support themselves during break and lunch times.

As we continue through the year, mental health and wellbeing will continue to focus in our day to day life in and around school with the support and strategies that we have in place. If you would like to learn more, please keep an eye out for our next Inclusion Newsletter or come to our next Inclusion Coffee Afternoon later on this term.

Mental Health Awareness Week 2022 - Loneliness

Did you know that loneliness has a huge impact on our physical and mental health? This Mental Health Awareness Week we want to tackle the epidemic of lonelin...

As a part of our continual school development I would like to offer parents and carers an opportunity to share some opinions and have some discussions to help inform our understanding of our current and future practices.

I would like to take this opportunity to reiterate a couple of key messages in relation to home packed lunches and school uniforms.

It has been noted over the last few weeks that the contents of some lunches are not providing our learners with a healthy balanced meal in line with the expectations that are set out. This in turn has a knock on effect on their ability to focus, concentrate and apply themselves to their learning through the rest of the day. If you child does have a home packed lunch please ensure that there is a healthy balance of carbohydrate, protein, fruits and vegetables.

Lunches under no circumstances should contain nuts, chocolate bars or sweets and we should be trying to minimise the amount of high salt, sugar and processed foods as much as possible.

For more information and ideas on this subject please follow the links below.

There has also been a slip in the standards that some of our learners are displaying with the wearing of the correct and appropriate school uniform and PE kits. As a part of their uniform shoes/trainers should be predominantly black. When wearing navy PE kits with white t-shirts, logos and branding should be at an absolute minimum and jumpers worn should be sweatshirts and not hooded tops. Under no circumstances should any other colour of shorts, jumper or trousers be worn, or football shirts.

I appreciate your co-operation in ensuring that we set the same standards and expectations for all learners within our school community.

Phil Good’s question this week this week, once again, has been really well received and created some interesting discussions…‘Which is more important, being right or being nice?’

Once again both Mrs Dean and Mrs McKenzie were blown away with the quality and quantity of the answers being provided by learners in all year groups. The recipients of the Golden Tickets of their well thought out answers were:

Olivia Y2: “Being nice because if you want to be treated nicely you have to treat others kindly. Being right doesn’t really matter.”

Ali-May Y3: “Being nice because if you are right all the time there is no point in coming to school.”

Ava Y5: “Nice because you don’t have to be right all the time as that’s the point of learning! Normally when you’re nice to people they tend to be nice back to you! Everyone wants to be treated nicely, so traet people how you want to be treated.”

Mr Rust: “I think it is always nice to be right, but it is always right to be nice!”

Today our Bucket Fillers were treated to a delicious cupcake and juice. It was really nice today to welcome back some children for a repeat visit this year, demonstrating how hard they are working at being a positive role model and good citizen in their class. As always we discussed my weekly questions and reflected on our week of learning. A huge well done to the following children for being nominated by their teachers this week:

N: Isla

R: Albert

Y1: Harvey

Y2: Liam

Y3: Spencer B

Y4: Amelia

Y5: Rhyder

Y6: Hobie

As well as Bucket Fillers, in assembly we have handed our Shephalbury LEARNER certificates, shared the attendance data and had a look at the house point totals.

As always our staff have seen pupils from around the school working hard to demonstrate the 7 attributes that make up a Shephalbury LEARNER, reflect, solve, create, think, stretch, grow and risk through the lessons and activities that they have participated in. Year 3: Ethan- Grow             Year 4: Caleb- Grow

Year 5: Jessie-Mae- Grow                Year 6: Ruby- Grow

This week I have handed out 7 Headteacher’s Awards, for some great work across the curriculum.

First this week in Reception was Esmie, for some excellent writing at home. Over the course of the year Esmie has consistently shown her love of writing, and this week she produced an outstanding book of stories about herself and her brother. It was a pleasure to read…I can’t wait to read the sequel!

Also producing some excellent writing this week in Reception was Katalea. During her child initiated learning Katalea accessed the writing are to write and illustrate her own story. Super work Katalea…keep it up!

Another Reception learner really excelling with their writing this week is Isabelle, who has been really engrossed (like the rest of the class) with the theme of pirates. Using our Talk4writing strategies learners have been writing their own innovated version of The Pirates Next Door. Isabelle’s writing is incredible, with added detail throughout. Super work!

In Year 1 this week Ethan is recognised for his brilliantly drawn story map, retelling the story of Jack and the Beanstalk. He showed me his work and used it to retell the story accurately. Great work Ethan!

Imogen, also in Year 1, has been mastering her understanding of quarters this week. Firstly by using pictorial strategies to find a quarter of different numbers, followed by applying this knowledge to the invers and finding the whole when given a quarter. Brilliant work Imogen!

In Year 2 the week Charlie has been working really hard on trying to apply himself independently to his work, demonstrating that he is a good Shephalbury LEARNER. Mrs Spiller has been incredibly impressed with Charlie’s application to his RE work, independently completing his tasks. Keep up the hard work Charlie!

And finally this week were Riley and Damon in Year 4, for more exceptionally good writing. They have been developing their authorial skills by including extra detail to ensure that the reader gets a fully immersive read within their writing. Both boys read their work to me fantastically well…keep it up!

I hope that you all enjoy a fantastic weekend!

Friday 5th May 2022

Well this 4 day week has flown by at a rate of knots! As always there has been a fantastic buzz of learning throughout the school, with learners demonstrating all of the attributes of Shephalbury LEARNERs within their lessons.

After a couple of rainy days it has been lovely to see a bit more sunshine, with the hope that there will be more over the weekend and next week. Our Year 6 learners have been working hard this week getting their final preparations and revision sessions in before their SATs tests next week. We hope that they feel as prepared as they can be, despite the last couple of challenging years that they have had with the ins and outs of COVID. As they head into the weekend and next week, I am sure that you will join me in wishing them good luck, and I hope that they are filled with self belief to show their true potential.

As a part of our drive to ensure that we are able to provide the very best for all of our learners and community we recently commissioned a full review of safeguarding at school. Yesterday we welcomed Carole Hinstridge, our school improvement partner to review our safeguarding policies, protocols and practices. We were accompanied throughout the day by Amy Collard, who is our governor with this area of responsibility. The day took an in depth look into many areas of our school, and she spoke with members across our entire community. Her feedback was very positive, and as always she really enjoyed speaking with our learners about how they feel about our school. She left us with a couple of suggestions which will support us in ensuring that we can continue to develop best practice.

Next week is also Mental Health Awareness Week. Throughout the school we have been highlighting the importance of good mental health with everyone, and developing our strategies and ways of supporting and educating everyone in this area. The theme of this week is loneliness, and classes will participate in some activities and sessions to further develop their understanding of this. If you would like some further information please follow the link below.

Phil Good’s question this week this week, directly links into the theme for next week…‘Is being alone the same as being lonely?’

Once again both Mrs Dean and Mrs McKenzie were blown away with the quality and quantity of the answers being provided by learners in all year groups. The recipients of the Golden Tickets of their well thought out answers were:

Leo Y2: “No! Because the people in your heart are still with you.”

Bella YR: “I felt lonely when I went to sleep.”

Nevaeh Y4: “No because being alone means that you do not want to play with your friends on that day, but being lonely means you do not have anyone to play with.”

Ella Y5: “No because being lonely is when you may be upset. People can choose to be alone, but you don’t choose to be lonely.”

N: Jaxon

R: Daniel

Y1: Ronnie

Y2: Lillyanna

Y3: Joshua

Y4: George B

Y5: Maya

Y6: Luca

As well as Bucket Fillers, in assembly we have handed our Shephalbury LEARNER certificates, shared the attendance data and had a look at the house point totals.

As always our staff have seen pupils from around the school working hard to demonstrate the 7 attributes that make up a Shephalbury LEARNER, reflect, solve, create, think, stretch, grow and risk through the lessons and activities that they have participated in. The children listed below have been nominated by their teachers for being Shephalbury LEARNERS this week, a huge well done to each and every one of them:

Nursery: Archie- Think                     Reception: Melissa M- Create

Year 1: Matthew- Risk                      Year 2: Jaden- Solve

Year 3: Emilia- Stretch                      Year 4: Kian- Grow

Year 5: Lewis- Think                         Year 6: Keeley- Stretch

This week I have handed out 2 Headteacher’s Awards, both for fantastic writing.

The first was for Florence (Y1) for some amazing writing about a range of animals. She really impressed me with her very neat handwriting and the use of full stops throughout the piece. Well done Florence…keep it up!

The second was for a brilliant story map created by Tommy (YR), based on the book The Prates Next Door. Learners across Reception have been really engaged with the book this week, but Tommy’s independent creation of a story map was brilliant. To top it off he confidently stood in front of the whole school in assembly and retold the story using his story map. Well done Tommy…we are really proud of you!

I hope that you all have a great weekend!

Friday 29th April 2022

As we approach the long weekend there has been a lot happening all over school.

It has been lovely to be able to welcome more parents back on site this week with our first inclusion coffee afternoon yesterday led by Mrs Dean and Mrs McKenzie. It was a great chance to get together with families and share some of the strategies we use in school and signpost to wider support. It also enables us to further develop support networks within school for learners and families.

Thank you to those parents who took the time to come, I hope that you found it useful. We will be holding these on a regular basis, and will be inviting professionals from other agencies to come in and speak with us. We will let you know when the next one is taking place.

We also saw the start of our extra-curricular provision for this term. In total we have 18 different clubs running across the week with a variety of different themes and activities. It has been great to see children engaging in dance, library, art, sports and circus skills throughout the week.

There are some clubs which still have spaces in them. If you are interested please contact the school office to find out more.

I wrote last week about the brilliant attendance that we had at our parent information session for our approach to phonics and early reading. Across Reception and Key Stage 1 we have started with our new strategy of the delivery of this, and learners have been engaging really well in their new groups. Everywhere you turn at 9am, there is the buzz of phonics followed by some great reading.

Mrs Dean and I have met with all teachers during this week to discuss the progress of learners in every class across the school. It has been interesting to see how much progress is being made in all areas of learners’ development, and how our staff are going to keep working hard in providing the best that we can for each and every learner.

Now onto our celebrations for the week.

Phil Good’s question this week was ‘If you could change the world, what would you change and why?’ It was interesting discussing this with different groups of children over lunch this week.

Both Mrs Dean and Mrs McKenzie were really impressed with the quality of the answers this week, as well as how many entries they received. The recipients of the Golden Tickets of their well thought out answers were:

Connie Y1- “I won’t change anything because the world is beautiful.”

Alys Y1- “Everyone would have a cat because I love cats.”

Kyrillos Y4- “I would make it so there is no discrimination of any type and so women have the same rights as men, because everyone deserves to be treated equally.”

Keeley Y6- “I would change all problems and let all homeless people have stuff they need. Also for criminals because none of us like suffering.”

Today our Bucket Fillers were treated to a mini roll and juice. It was really nice today to welcome back some children for a repeat visit this year, demonstrating how hard they are working at being a positive role model and good citizen in their class. As always we discussed my weekly questions and reflected on our week of learning. A huge well done to the following children for being nominated by their teachers this week:

N: Rebecca

R: Tommy

Y1: Louis

Y2: Emma

Y3: Olly

Y4: Melody

Y5: Emily

Y6: Ellis

As well as Bucket Fillers, in assembly we have handed our Shephalbury LEARNER certificates, shared the attendance data and had a look at the house point totals.

As always our staff have seen pupils from around the school working hard to demonstrate the 7 attributes that make up a Shephalbury LEARNER, reflect, solve, create, think, stretch, grow and risk through the lessons and activities that they have participated in. The children listed below have been nominated by their teachers for being Shephalbury LEARNERS this week, a huge well done to each and every one of them:

Nursery: Maison- Grow                                 Reception: Sophie- Grow

Year 1: Imogen- Grow                                  Year 2: Leo- Stretch

Year 3: Spencer C- Stretch                           Year 4: Laura- Reflect

Year 5: Max- Create                                      Year 6: Logan- Stretch

This week I have handed out 3 Headteacher’s Awards, all for different reasons.

First this week was Jaiden (YR) who had worked really hard to develop his application of phonics to his reading and writing. He was challenged by Mrs Lee this week to read her sentence and draw a picture that showed what it said. Jaiden not only did this, but he wrote his own sentence and drew a picture to represent it. Super work Jaiden, keep up the hard work!

The next 2 awards both went to boys in Year 6. Firstly Liam R for his added commitment to revising some of the topics that his class have been revising in maths this week. With SATs coming up in a couple of weeks, learners are busy preparing themselves, and Liam was challenged to do some extra revision which he did fantastically well. Great work Liam!

The second award in Year 6 went to Hobie who has been a fantastic help in and around EYFS, and to Mr Haslett. As well as reading and working with some of our younger learners, Hobie has been helping to recondition some pedal bikes and build balance bikes to support the physical development in EYFS. Hobie has demonstrated so many positive attributes with the attitude and skills that he has shown. Thank you Hobie for making a big difference for our young learners!

I hope that you all enjoy the long weekend and look forward to seeing everyone on Tuesday next week.

Welcome back to school!

As always, after a well earned break it already feels like we have never been away. Even in the short time we have all been back at school there has been a lot going on.

I started this week by sharing an assembly focusing on respect. Learners discussed who they should show respect to in our school community, and the ways in which they are able to show this. There were lots of great ideas, and we will be ensuring that the respect that they show is clearly demonstrated to all.

Today saw our House winners from last term, Unicorns, celebrate their win with crazy hair day. It was great to see the creativity and crazy styles across the school.

Yesterday our learners in EYFS received some very exciting post direct from Winsor Castle. Earlier in the year learners had written letters and made pictures to send to The Queen on the occasion of her Platinum Jubilee. These were obviously very well received, and one of The Queen’s Ladies in Waiting responded with a letter of thanks, along with some fantastic mementoes for the school.

Also yesterday, we were belatedly visited by two Easter Bunnies, from Costain, as we had been selected as their local Easter raffle winners. The bunnies eagerly hopped around school causing chaos and delivering an Easter egg to every learner in the school. Many thanks to Costain for providing this for us!

An email was sent home to everyone today highlighting an issue which has been raised recently on many social media channels. We have been made aware that there are sunscreen lotions, including Nivea kids, that now contain nut oils in their active ingredients. Please be reminded that we are a nut free school, with children who suffer with severe nut allergies, and as such there should be no nut products whatsoever in school.

Please carefully check the ingredients of the sunscreen lotions that you are using before sending your children into school with it on.

Today we held a parent information session in relation to our approach to phonics and early reading, led by our English leader Mrs Cargill. The introduction to the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds revised scheme was really well attended by parents from Reception and Years 1 & 2. Thank you to those who showed your support and attended this as it will greatly benefit you and your child in developing their reading.

During the session Mrs Cargill shared some videos and resources, there are more available by following the link below. A huge thank you to Mrs Cargill for putting the session together, if you have any further questions regarding this please contact your child’s teacher or Mrs Cargill.

As we have only been in for a short period this week there was no celebration assembly this week, our awards will be back up and running next Friday. I hope that you have a great weekend,

Friday 1st April 2022

We have made it to the end of term, and what a way to end the week we have had!

Yesterday was a busy day in and around the school for a number of reasons, including the influx of snow that we had! Everyone enjoyed their yoga and mindfulness experience during the day. Each class had the opportunity to experience some different moves and learn about the benefits of yoga and mindfulness for the physical and mental wellbeing. It was clear how calm and relaxed all classes were having had their experience.

During the afternoon yesterday the first group of Phil Good’s Golden Ticket winners were rewarded with the Phil’s Golden Moment. This was ice cream sundaes, and they were thoroughly well deserved and enjoyed by the attendees. A huge well done to this lucky group, and we look forward to seeing what Phil’s next Golden moment has in store.

In our final celebration assembly of the term we drew our lucky Easter raffle winners. Firstly, it is important to say a huge thank you to all of the staff members who have generously donated eggs and other treats as prizes! Secondly, thank you to everyone who purchased tickets, the money raised will donated to support the victims of the war in Ukraine.

Also, during our assembly, we announced that Unicorns were this term’s House Champions with an impressive total of 1152. A massive well done to each member of the Unicorns team! During our School Council meeting at the start of this week they voted for the winning house to have a ‘crazy hair day’ on Friday 22nd April. We look forward to seeing your crazy designs!

When we return after the Easter break, children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 will begin following the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised phonics programme. Children’s learning in phonics underpins their early reading skills, the development of which is crucial to be able to access learning across the curriculum.

To make children’s learning in phonics as effective as possible, we will be making some changes to the structure of children’s phonics lessons. Children will be taught in smaller groups, closely matched to their current development in phonics. Throughout this half-term, children have been assessed and grouped accordingly. To ensure children’s lessons, match their needs as closely as possible, groups may consist of children from Reception, Year 1 and Year 2.

In their small groups, children will take part in a daily phonics session, learning new sounds and practising their reading skills. This will be followed by a daily reading session, allowing children to apply the skills learnt in their phonics lesson.

We would like to invite parents and carers, with children in Reception, Year 1 or 2, to an information session to find out more about the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised phonics programme on Friday 22nd April. There will be two identical sessions at 9.00am and 2.30pm. Each session will last for approximately 30 minutes and outline the teaching structure in school and provide ideas and resources to help you support your child at home.

So that we can ensure we are able to set up appropriately, please confirm your attendance and indicate which session you will be joining via the link below. We hope that all parents and carers will be able to attend one of the sessions.

From the Governors

‘Hello everyone – just a quick note to wish you all a lovely Easter break. We’ve had a good few weeks in this half term, we went into school en-masse recently and had a really interesting time in the classrooms and talking to teachers, it helps us understand how the school is improving and gives us pointers for our discussions next term. Governors are really pleased with the progress being made this year. Hopefully we will get to see many of you next term at school.’

Phil Good’s question this week was ‘How would you keep yourself safe if you had to brush a crocodile’s teeth?’ It was interesting discussing this with different groups of children over lunch this week.

The recipients of the Golden Tickets of their well thought out answers were:

Ethan (R)- ‘Be in a box and make small hole to brush his teeth through.’

Imogen (Y1)- ‘No because it is not safe.’

Sofia (Y3)- ‘Make sure you’re with an adult that knows what to do.’

Rhyder (Y5)- ‘Use a long mechanical arm!’

Our extra-curricular programme for the Summer Term was circulated yesterday and the booking system will go live at around 1pm today. All club payments will be allocated during the week that we return after the Easter holidays.

Now onto our celebrations for the week. Thank you very much to Mrs Ramus for her very special Easter cake contribution today, they were loved by everyone! Those nominated as Bucket Fillers this week joined me at the tea party to enjoy their treat and a drink, as well as answering my weekly questions!

Friday 25th March 2022

It has been fantastic to be back to work this week, and what a wonderful welcome back I have had from many, thank you!

One of the best parts about returning to school this week has been seeing the genuine excitement throughout the school for our smallest and fluffiest members of the community. Many of us have been fortunate to have a hold, and watching them run around the hall has been great fun for us all!

It was also great this week to be able to welcome parents back into school for our Learning Review Meetings. I know how nice it is to be able to see your child’s work and have a face to face conversation with their teacher. I hope that you found these valuable and informative, with some good advice on how to support your child with their learning.

This week also saw us welcome mums, nans, grandmas and a few dads to our Mother’s Day breakfast for our Nursery and Reception classes. It was lovely to see the children sharing their croissant and hot cross buns with their adults and sing them a special song. Thank you to everyone who attended the event, we hope that you enjoyed it as much as we did.

Also this week we sent off our donations for Ukrainian Square UK, they will be being shipped directly over to the people of Mykolayiv this weekend. The donations were received with great thanks as they will provide for those who need it the most! The money raised by our Easter raffle will also be donated to the cause.

When we return after the Easter break, children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 will begin following the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised phonics programme. Children’s learning in phonics underpins their early reading skills, the development of which is crucial to be able to access learning across the curriculum.

Our inclusion and pastoral team of Mrs Dean, Mrs McKenzie and Phil Good have been busy compiling the first of their Inclusion Newsletters. In it you will find a wealth of information that may support you and your family at home, local groups and activities, upcoming events and a whole lot more. Please take some time to have a read:

Phil Good’s question this week was ‘Is it good to be happy all of the time?’ It was interesting discussing this with different groups of children over lunch this week.

The recipients of the Golden Tickets of their well thought out answers were:

Charlie Y1- 'Yes because you will have fun'

Lilly Y3- No I don't think it is good to be happy all the time because it is good to have other feelings, and how do you know what happy feels like if you haven't experienced other emotions?'

Archie Y6- 'It's good to be happy and good to be sad, because it's ok to show your emotions'

Our extra-curricular programme for the Summer Term will be sent out later this week. Booking for these will open next Friday at 1pm on Gateway. All club payments will be allocated during the week that we return after the Easter holidays.

Now onto our celebrations for the week. Thank you very much to Mrs Spiller for her cake contribution today, they were loved by everyone! Those nominated as Bucket Fillers this week joined me at the tea party to enjoy their treat and a drink, as well as answering my weekly questions!

Year 5: Rhyder- Stretch                                            Year 6: Amelia Q- Think

This week I have handed out 3 Headteacher’s Awards, all for fantastic writing and phonics.

First this week was Violet (Y2) who had worked really hard to independently write the end part to her innovated version of Little Red Riding Hood. Violet showed fantastic concentration, and application of the skills she has been practising, to write about her new characters- Little Green Riding Hood, the Fox and the Gardener. Super work Violet...well done!

Next this week was Sophie in Reception for a couple of reasons. We are really proud of how hard Sophie has been working to improve her phonic knowledge, both at school and at home. This week she has been using this phonic knowledge in her writing, independently applying it on her own. Amazing work Sophie…keep it up!

Finally this week was Isabelle, also in Reception. Isabelle spent an afternoon this week writing herself a bedtime book, something which I know could help a lot of people! Included in her book were nursery rhymes and some bedtime stories that she had created herself. This was a lovely thing to be able to create and share with me. Great work Isabelle!

I hope that you have a restful weekend and I will see you all on Monday!

Friday 18th March 2022

A very red and funny end to our Science Week at Shephalbury Park. Unfortunately, I have been a mere observer from home due to my isolation…but I have seen how engaged learners across the school have been, especially with the newest member of our school community.

The theme for British Science Week has been ‘Growth’, and as a school we focused our learning on a book ‘Greta and the Giants’ which highlights the plight of deforestation and climate change. It is based on the work of Greta Thunberg and has formed the basis for cross-curricular work throughout the week. It is vital that we educate ourselves and our children about the effects that humans have on the earth, and understand how we as humans need to adapt and develop to ensure the long term health of our world.

In Nursery this week, we have been celebrating Science Week and have engaged in a variety of ‘growing’ theme based activities. To start the week we made our own seed balls, planted some cress and watched the fluffy chicks hatch from their eggs. We learnt about the important job that honeybees have and observed a real honeycomb from the hive before making delicious honey sandwiches. To finish the week, we listened to the story ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’ and planted our own broad beans, knowing exactly how to look after them in order for them to grow.

In addition, a big thank you to Mrs Murphy (Rebecca’s Mummy) for joining us this week and sharing many exciting experiments with us!

In Reception we have been very busy observing the chicks and were even lucky to watch one of them hatch. We have also been discussing different types of growing, the children have been plant detectives looking around our environment for different types of plants and discussing where and why they grow so well in certain areas.

The children have also been growing some cress seeds, which they will hopefully see growing over the weekend. We also read the story Greta and the Giants, we discussed why the animals were upset and what Greta did to try to help them. We then thought about ways we could help the environment, we went on a walk around the school and discussed turning off lights, shutting doors, turning off laptops and recycling. We are finishing the week off by creating some posters to serve as reminders of all the things we can do to help the environment.

As part of Science Week, Year 1 have been busy writing persuasive letters to the giants in the story ‘Greta and the Giants’, thinking hard about all of the reasons why the giants should protect the animals’ habitats. We have also enjoyed seeing the chicks hatch and have been learning about their life cycles. We explored the school grounds looking at the different things which grow there, in particular all of the different types of trees we are lucky to have. Earlier in the week, we planted cress, which has just started to grow. We are keeping a diary to show how it changes each day and are hoping to be able to eat it soon!

In Science Week, Year 2 have been looking at how animals and humans grow. First, we looked at the different stages of human life, focusing on what humans are able to do throughout the different stages. We worked as pairs to create a human life cycle and compare baby/toddler/child/teenager/adult. We also looked at the animal life cycle and became researchers, using books, fact-files and the internet to investigate the life cycle of a duck and a butterfly. Tomorrow in Science we will be looking at David Attenborough and the impact he has had on the cause to conserve the environment. Year 2 will be using the research they do to create fact-files on David Attenborough.

In art, we looked at the illustration style of Greta and the Giants and created watercolour depictions of how we will save the environment. We focused on blending and picking appropriate tones for the paintings.

Our guided reading this week focused around Greta and the Giants. We started by completing some comprehension work on the story, making mind-maps answering key questions about the book. Then, we wrote to Greta about how we could change the environment. In another one of our lessons we made pledges of how we will work to save the planet and talked about that is our responsibility as humans. Tomorrow, we will be writing our own protest posters just like Greta did in the book.

We have had a very busy week in Science week, exploring the life of Greta Thunberg and her views on climate change. In English, we began the week by reading the book ‘Greta and the Giants’ in which we discovered how one small act can change the world. Then, we moved onto reading, learning and reciting a poem by Liz Brownlee, called Greta Thunberg. Throughout this work, we focused on our voice, facial expressions and how we can perform poetry to others. This culminated with a joint performance of the poem, by both Year 3 and Year 4. We also made placards, which the children held in their performance.

In Science, we looked at the real-world effects of climate change, including melting ice gaps, the greenhouse effect and the increase in rainfall in our world. We predicted what would happen and then sought to find reasons why this happened, after the experiment. We used this to think about how we can make a change in our world, by researching different ways we can slow down climate change. Then we pledged to do one thing individually, which will be added to a shared display on the Year 3 and 4 stairway.

In Year 5 we have been looking at where our food comes from, the impact it is having on our environment and how we can solve the problem of food miles. First, we began by answering the question: Does temperature impact how much dough rises whilst proving? We then used that dough to create our own fresh rolls. After researching food miles and the impact this has on the environment, we tried to answer the question: Can we plan a sustainable and healthy burger? Finally, today we created our burgers and looked to see whether our ideas are sustainable and tasty! Alongside all of this we created raps on climate change in our English sessions to encourage people to look after our planet!

This week has been a busy week for year 6! We have been selling items to the school community which has been a great success- thank you.

Also, we are beginning to build our understanding surrounding climate change and in doing so, have been looking at Greta Thunberg and taking inspiration from her powerful speeches to write our own.

During our afternoons, we have been thinking about how we could be more sustainable. On Tuesday, we baked bread and recording its ‘Growth’ on a line graph.

On Wednesday, we researched how we could buy more sustainably and ensure that we reduce our food miles wherever possible. Which lead to today, where we made a healthy burger using our cooking skills.

Our staff have been on the lookout throughout the week to identify their ‘Scientist of the Week’, owing to their commitment to learning during our Science Week. A huge well done to the following learners:

N: Kai

R: Albert

Y1: Daniel

Y2: Alfie B

Y3: Olly

Y4: Kian

Y5: Max

Y6: Noah

This week’s question was ‘If you see someone being bullied, should you do anything about it? If you don’t, should you feel guilty?’

Winners:

Owen C - Y6 "Yes, you should, because it isn't right.  You should treat people how you would want to be treated."

Jenson- Y5 "If someone is bullied you should help them because if that happened to you you wouldn't like it."

Bella- Y4 "Yes you should because if you don't tell and they don't tell there worries could build up.  You should feel guilty because then no one can do anything about it and then you'll be a bit like the girls from The Big Bag of Worries."

This weeks question " Is it good to be happy all the time?"

A reminder for anyone who hasn’t yet booked their Learning Review Meeting for next week. The booking system will close on Monday so please ensure that you book over the weekend.

There are no clubs – other than Tea Pot – after school on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday next week.

Today there was a sea of red around the school, along with the odd red nose, in recognition of Comic Relief. Everyone got the chance to share their best joke with their class with the favourite being voted for in each class to be shared in assembly. Many of the winning jokes were shared with me, and they all made me chuckle!

Well done to our winners:

We haven’t asked for donations to school this year, but if you are able and willing to make a donation to Comic Relief then please go direct to their website via the link below.

Now onto our celebrations for the week. Those nominated as Bucket Fillers this week joined Mrs Dean for their treat and a drink!

A huge well done to the following children for being nominated by their teachers this week:

N: Rebecca

R: Lillee

Y1: Rae

Y2: Zaki

Y3: Emilia

Y4: Laura

Y5: Emily

Y6: Amelia Q

As well as Bucket Fillers, we have handed our Shephalbury LEARNER certificates, shared the attendance data and had a look at the house point totals.

Nursery: Nayeel                            Reception: Felicity B

Year 3: Amelia                             Year 4: Melisa

Year 5: Joe                                    Year 6: Teddy

This week saw Mrs Cropley and Mrs Dean hand out one Headteacher’s Award for some excellent phonics work in Nursery. Arthur used his phonic knowledge really well to spell out CVC words independently with the magnetic letters, and then continued to use his knowledge to read them. Super work Arthur…well done!

I hope that you have a restful weekend and I will hopefully see you all on Monday!

Friday 11th March 2022

Another very busy week at Shephalbury Park comes to an end!

We started the week with an assembly by Mrs Dean and Mrs McKenzie, in which they shared Mrs McKenzie’s new role as our Pastoral Support Assistant. A summary of this was sent out to you all yesterday:

‘As part of our commitment to supporting our whole school community, I am delighted to be able to tell you about Mrs McKenzie's new role within school.  Mrs McKenzie is now our Pastoral Support Assistant working closely alongside Mrs Dean. She is no longer classroom based, meaning she is available to support more children throughout the day. Her focus is to support our children with their mental health and wellbeing.

Her role is also to support families in a range of ways so please watch out for upcoming coffee mornings, support and information groups and sign posting emails. She is currently working hard to get all families signed up to our National Online Platform (as advertised in Mr Conway's blog). The platform provides a wealth of information for teachers and families to keep themselves and their children safe. If you haven't signed up already please follow the link below to do so

https://nationalonlinesafety.com/enrol/shephalbury-park-primary-school

The children have been told in assembly that they can access Mrs McKenzie independently, in the playground from 8.40am and at 12.30pm.  Mrs McKenzie will see them at other times should they request it. We are encouraging children to be pro-active if they feel they need support.

As well as sharing her role, they introduced Phil Good’s question of the week. Phil is our wellbeing ambassador, supporting us in understanding how to develop and support our own mental wellbeing. Each week, Phil will be setting a new question of the week to all learners, that is displayed at school and on each of the dining tables as a conversation starter. Answers and responses can be recorded and entered into the weekly draw, from which 2 winners will be selected for Golden Tickets to the ‘Phil Good Moment’ event at the end of each half term.

This week’s question was ‘How can we keep ourselves feeling ok if we have a scary dream?’

And the recipients of Phil's first Golden Tickets were Sofia M (Y5) and Isabel (R).

We also recognised and celebrated International Women’s Day in our assembly on Tuesday this week. International Women's Day is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity. Significant activity is witnessed worldwide as groups come together to celebrate women's achievements or rally for women's equality.’

As a school we actively recognise the important role that Women play in contributing to our lives every day, and we promote equality for all in everything that we do. For more information about International Women’s Day please follow the link below:

Last week I shared that we will be holding face to face Learning Review Meetings in the week beginning 21st March. The booking system is set up and ready to go live at 5.30pm tonight. Those with registered email addresses will receive an email with booking instructions at this time.

Please see below if you didn’t receive a copy of the letter sent out today:

We had a triumphant return to competitive netball this week, with our Year 5 netball team securing a 6-2 win against St Nicholas. A huge well done to the team, as for many this was their first taste of sport in the competitive arena. Hannah was nominated as player of the match!

Also on Thursday this week, our Year 5 & 6 Sports Hall Athletes competed at Barnwell in a range of different running and field events. They all acquitted themselves very well and were awarded the Commonwealth award for demonstrating the most passion. A fantastic achievement…well done!

A huge thank you to everyone who has already made a contribution to our collection for the people of Mykolayiv, Ukraine. The trolley will be out for donations through the next week before the items are collected. To see what items are being requested, please see the letter below:

Next week is Science Week at Shephalbury Park, and there will be science led learning across the school throughout the week in all classes (you will see some in the blog next week!). Along with what is happening in lessons, we will be holding a Science Sale next week, every day after school (while stocks last) between 3-3.30pm. All items will be priced at £1 or £2, please try and have the exact change with you.

Also coming up next week on Friday 18th March is Red Nose Day. We will be encouraging everyone to wear red and come to school armed with their best joke, for a class joke off. More information will be shared with everyone at the beginning of next week.

Now onto our celebrations for the week. The catering for this week’s Bucket Filler’s tea party was supplied by Mrs Cropley…thank you for the delicious cakes! Those nominated by their teacher joined me for their treat and a drink, along with my weekly tea party questions!

A huge well done to the following children for being nominated by their teachers this week:

N: Elara

R: Bella

Y1: Henry

Y2: Lenny B

Y3: Pippa

Y4: Yumna

Y5: Skye

Y6: Owen

As well as Bucket Fillers, we have handed our Shephalbury LEARNER certificates, shared the attendance data and had a look at the house point totals.

Nursery: Albie- Grow                     Reception: Melissa M- Grow

Year 1: George- Risk                     Year 2: Freddie- Reflect

Year 3: Oscar- Grow                     Year 4: Kyrillos- Stretch

Year 5: Kian T- Grow                     Year 6: Finnley- Think

This week saw me hand out a wealth of Headteacher’s Award for some awesome work across the school.

First up this week was Bethany (Y4) for her brilliant piece of writing in English this week. She used the class model and independently adapted it with her own ideas to create an interesting resolution and ending to her change story. Fantastic work Bethany, I really enjoyed listening to it!

Another fabulous writer this week was Lilly (Y3), whose hot task wishing story was brilliant. She utilised many of the skills that had been developed through the unit of work, and applied to them to her own ideas and story writing. Great work Lilly…keep it up!

Yet another learner recognised for their writing this week is TJ (R). During child initiated learning, TJ independently used his phonics to write about what his friends in class were doing, or had done during the day. This is a great way of linking his learning and showing a desire to utilise and practice his skills independently. Well done TJ!

Also in Reception this week, Ayaaz has been working really hard with his reading at home. We talk regularly at school about using our growth mindset and the Shephalbury LERARNER attributes even when we find things tough going. Ayaaz has done this recently and demonstrated his inner Shephalbury LEARNER with his reading at home. Well done Ayaaz…we are proud of you!

8 more people who have shown a real commitment to improving their reading are George, Louis, Imogen, Daniel, Tia, Olivia, Alys and Rae (Y1). Each of them has really impressed both Mrs Cargill, Mrs Levy and myself with the progress that they have made in their reading. This stems from their application in school, as well as regular reading at home, and each of them has moved up at least 4 and some up to 7 reading levels so far this term. Great work guys!

And finally this week is Connie (Y1) for her excellent work in Computing. Mrs Spiller was extremely impressed with the knowledge that Connie had of all of the technical vocabulary linked to spreadsheets, as well as her skills in editing them. She came and explained it all to me, and she may be troubleshooting for me next time I need some help on Excel! Super work Connie!

I hope that you have a great weekend.

Friday 4th March 2022

What a spectacular end to the week we have had with our celebration of World Book Day!

Our entire school community got excited about their favourite book characters, dressed up, and engaged in some brilliant book and reading themed activities throughout the day.

Also throughout the day today, we had our ‘Where’s Wally Book’ hunt around our outdoor areas. Following on from Mrs Cargill’s assembly yesterday everyone was very excited to see if they could find them all, with the prospect of being entered into the prize draw if they did! A huge well done to everybody who managed to find them all, especially our lucky winners: Albie (N), Ronnie (Y1), Olivia (Y4) and Raynie (Y6).

We widely recognise that reading is the cornerstone of learning for life, and it is vitally important that we encourage all of our learners to develop a love of books to help improve and develop their reading. As a part of our drive to further inspire a love of reading for all, we have introduced our 100 day reading challenge for all learners. The booklet that has been sent home has a range of ideas for daily challenges and requires some daily evidence of these. We are expecting everyone to complete the challenge!

For those that do there will be a certificate, and they will be entered into the prize draw, where 1 winner from each class will be joined and will get to choose any book of their choice as a prize.

A huge thank you to Mrs Cargill for putting the challenges together for us all!

You may remember School Council's plant pot competition which ran in response to our desire to get more green plants into our classrooms. It is proven that indoor plants can help to keep you healthier and happier, offering both psychological and physical health benefits that include:

  1. Improving your mood
  2. Reducing fatigue
  3. Lowering stress and anxiety
  4. Improving performance and focus
  5. Boosting healing and pain tolerance
  6. Minimising the occurrence of headaches by improving air quality
  7. Easing dry skin and respiratory ailments due to dry air

Over the past couple of weeks our winners, as chosen by School Council, have been transferring their winning designs to their pots. There are still some to be finished, and then all we need is some plants to put in them and get them into the classrooms!

A huge thank you to those who have already donated. We are still looking for donations of any of the following, that are in a good and complete condition to supplement our wet play activities for classes. If you are able to donate, please bring items to the stable during drop off next week:

  • Small world figures (NO guns or swords etc.)
  • Complete board games
  • Complete puzzles
  • Building blocks (Lego, Duplo, Mega Blocks)

We are currently finalising the organisation for our Learning Review Meetings that will be taking place in the week beginning 21st March. As it stands we will be holding these as face to face meetings as we are keen to share your child’s books and learning with you. However, this may change should there be any concerns regarding rates of COVID transmission in classes nearer the time. Full information and booking instructions will be circulated next week.

We will also be sending out information for our annual Easter Raffle in the next week or so. Keep your eyes peeled for how to buy tickets in the coming weeks.

Now onto our celebrations for the week. The catering for this week’s Bucket Filler’s tea party was supplied by Mrs Cargill…thank you for the delicious cupcakes! Those nominated by their teacher joined me for their treat and a drink, along with my weekly tea party questions!

A huge well done to the following children for being nominated by their teachers this week:

N: Molly

R: Ethan

Y1: Alys

Y2: Kyla D

Y3: Richard

Y4: Riley

Y5: Sofia

Y6: Miles

As well as Bucket Fillers, we have handed our Shephalbury LEARNER certificates, shared the attendance data and had a look at the house point totals.

Nursery: Kacper- Think                Reception: Isabelle- Create

Year 1: Florence- Grow                Year 2: Autumn- Risk

Year 3: Pippa- Grow                     Year 4: Anjolaoluwa- Create

Year 5: Milly- Grow                      Year 6: Lewis- Think

This week saw me hand out 7 Headteacher’s Award for some awesome work mostly in our younger year groups.

First up this week was Jaiden (R) for some very inventive modelling at home. Helped by his dad, Jaiden created a fantastic model rocket, using tubing from the carpet shop, tin foil and painted the boost flames. Well done for taking your creativity home Jaiden!

Next this week was another member of our Reception class, Teddy, who has been working incredibly hard across the curriculum all week. Not only has he been excelling with his independent work in maths, looking at different ways of making the same amount, but he has also been using his phonics knowledge to write during child initiated learning time. This is really pleasing to see Teddy…you really are developing into a great Shephalbury LEARNER!

Inspired by his World Book Day writing activity today were both Liam B and Finnley (Y6). The task for Year 6 was to write a blurb for their favourite book. They both chose subjects that interested them, and this made their writing all the more interesting. Great writing boys, well done!

In addition to this, not only had Liam produced a good piece of writing, but he recognised how he has recently changed his attitude to learning, applying himself better in all aspects of his learning. This was really pleasing to hear, and makes me proud to have learners like this in our school. Keep it up Liam!

In Year 1 this week, Eddie has also been demonstrating the Shephalbury LEANRER attributes in his independent work. Mrs Levy and Mrs Cargill have been super impressed with Eddie’s growth in his handwriting, and this really showed when he was listing adjectives for the characters in Little Red Riding Hood. Well done Eddie…we are proud of you!

My next award went to yet another member of our Reception class. Isabelle visited Mrs Dean this week to share with her a contribution for all of our Phil Good bags that are in every class. We introduced these during our Feel Good week before half term, and they are filled with a variety of items that learners can use to help them stay calm, keep focused, cheer them up or concentrate in lessons. During her child initiated learning this week Isabelle wrote a list of things to help cheer people up if they needed it, to go into the bags. This is a really kind and thoughtful act, and has really filled both Mrs Dean’s bucket and mine this week. Thank you Isabelle!

And finally this week was Nayeel (N), who has been inspired by the story of the Gingerbread Man. So much so that he illustrated and retold his own version of the story to the whole of EYFS. Not only is this demonstrate great creativity, but also shows Nayeel’s growth in sharing this with everyone during assembly. Amazing work Nayeel…well done!

I hope that you have a restful weekend.

Friday 25th February 2022

With all that is going on in the world around us, we have had a great first week back at Shephalbury Park. As always, our learners have settled back in really well and are engaging in some fantastic learning across the curriculum.

Having visited lessons across the school this week, learners have really impressed me with the way in which they are building their learning over time, linking their current learning to prior knowledge and skills and their commitment to use our Shephalbury LEARNER attributes to support them in their work.

I communicated with you all earlier in the week regarding our adaptations in light of the most recent Government guidance. In line with this we will be starting to reintroduce some elements that we have missed over recent months, beginning today with assemblies. Despite these changes, I would still urge you to be vigilant with your children and support us in ensuring that we prevent any potential outbreaks.

There has been a lot written and shown in the media this week regarding the situation in Ukraine. This is something which many of our older children are aware of and have been speaking about. We will support them in their understanding of the situation and ask that you support them should they be curious at home. I am sure you will join me in sending thoughts and support for those involved, and hope that an appropriate solution is found as soon as possible.

We are currently in the process of updating some of the resources that we use on the playgrounds during lunch times, and in classes for wet play. We are looking for donations of any of the following, that are in a good and complete condition. If you are able to donate, please bring items to the stable during drop off next week:

  • Small world figures (NO guns or swords etc.)
  • Complete board games
  • Complete puzzles
  • Building blocks (Lego, Duplo, Mega Blocks)

We updated our corridor displays prior to the half term break, show casing the fantastic learning that had happened in our wider curriculum. From Stevenage to China, and London to the rainforest, there has been some deep an interesting learning taking place all over the school. Have a look for yourselves below.

We will be celebrating World Book Day on Friday 4th March, and welcome everyone to dress up as a book character. We look forward to seeing all of your costumes!

Now onto our celebrations for the week. The catering for this week’s Bucket Filler’s tea party was supplied by Mrs Mutch…thank you for the delicious cupcakes! Those nominated by their teacher joined me for their treat and a drink, along with my weekly tea party questions!

A huge well done to the following children for being nominated by their teachers this week:

N: Emily

R: Ayaaz

Y1: Charlie

Y2: Jessica

Y3: Mina

Y4: George P

Y5: Jenson

Y6: Archie

As well as Bucket Fillers, we have handed our Shephalbury LEARNER certificates, shared the attendance data and had a look at the house point totals.

Year 1: Ethan- Grow             Year 2: Emma- Grow

Year 3: Freddie- Think          Year 4: Amelia- Reflect

Year 5: Ezme- Think             Year 6: Tommy- Stretch

This week saw me hand out 3 Headteacher’s Award for some awesome work across the school.

First this week was Poppy (Y1) for some lovely writing of her day out during the half term break. Poppy was lucky enough to visit the LOL Live show during the break with a friend. They took the train into London and watched what I am told was a brilliant show. Poppy followed her trip by writing a recount of her day, including her train ticket and photos as reminders. Great work Poppy…well done!

Also receiving Headteacher’s awards this week were Phoebe and Caleb (Y4) for a fantastic start to their Spanish learning journey. This week in Year 4 leaners have been practising their basic conversational Spanish in asking each other how they are and what their names are. I was immensely impressed with Caleb and Phoebe’s Spanish skill in conversing with each other. Bien hecho (well done)!

I hope that you have a restful weekend.

Friday 11th February 2022

In what feels like the blink of an eye, we have made it through to half term, and what a busy week we have had across the school!

I mentioned in my blog last week that this week was Feeling Good Week and Children’s Mental Health Week. As a school, we recognise how important these things are for our entire community and work hard to educate everyone in developing their understanding and ability to support themselves and each other.

This year’s theme of ‘Growing Together Positively, Acceptance, Respect and Celebration. At Shephalbury being unique is what makes us brilliant!’ has been clearly evident through the activities that have been taking place during each and every day this week. Learners across the school have been encouraged to recognise and celebrate what makes them unique, discuss what acceptance and respect is within context and understand how to portray these as good citizens.

Displays have been created representing all of our learners’ uniqueness, our Tree of Positivity is being used by learners for positive affirmations and there are active conversations amongst learners and staff about how we support ourselves and each other. Learners are developing that understanding that it is ok not to be ok…it is such a key message and one that we are keen to develop with our community, as this is the starting point in developing skills and strategies to start feeling ok.

From colouring club and Just Dance at break times, to rock painting in class, a lot of thought and effort has gone in this week from our Wellbeing Team of staff. A huge thank you to all of them for planning and delivering a really empowering week of ideas and activities.

A message from the Chair of Governors:

Dear Parents and Carers

Just a quick note from me – we attended the Spring Visit from our professional improvement partner yesterday to sit in on feedback and ask questions. The visit this time was particular to our Early Years offer, our PSHE curriculum (Personal Social Health and Economic) and our Safeguarding practices. The feedback was exceptional and Governors are really pleased that the observations from our external advisor match our own internal evaluations. We continue to make visits into school to see for ourselves the impact of the Shephalbury LEARNER in the classrooms

We have recently recruited two new Governors and we welcome Phillip Prasad and Matthew Nicoll to the governing body. We still have spaces and we are still looking to encourage anyone who is interested in doing more or wants to get involved in the school’s future. Please contact me through the school office, you do not need professional experience in education, bringing your own skill actually strengthens the Governing Body.

I hope everyone has a pleasant half term.

Cameron Smith

Once again I would like to draw your attention to the following:

As a part of our commitment to keep our community safe online, we are delighted to be working with National Online Safety to support us in increasing awareness and keeping everyone safe staying safe online. The resources include Parents & Carers courses (presented by Myleene Klass), online video resources and weekly guides covering a huge range of topics.

Friday 4th February 2022

Good afternoon, as we reach a damp end to the week there has been a lot happening throughout the week. I have seen some fantastic learning across the curriculum, from suspense writing in Year 4 to dragon dancing and noodle eating in EYFS, there is a real eagerness in our learners to engage in all that our teachers offer them!

Today saw us hold our House curling tournament, which is quite apt given that today also marks the opening of the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing. Learners from all year groups learnt about the sport, and the names for the equipment that we used. Everyone took part in earning house points for their teams. It was lots of fun for everyone, and with lots of house points on offer, we really saw some competitive sliding!

After averaging the scores of each house in each class and adding together the class points the final standings are as follows:

1st Unicorns  600hp              Joint 2nd  Dragons & Griffin 500hp              3rd Phoenix 400hp

This year also saw celebrations for the Lunar New Year, something that our learners in Nursery and Reception have been finding out about and experiencing in their classroom activities. We would like to wish anyone celebrating a Happy New Year and good luck for the year of the Tiger!

Next week across the entire school we will be recognising and learning about Feeling Good Week and Children’s Mental Health Week. We all recognise that feeling good and looking after our mental wellbeing is critical in us being happy and being able to apply ourselves well in both school and in our general lives.

This year’s theme at Shephalbury Park will be Growing Together Positively, Acceptance, Respect and Celebration. At Shephalbury being unique is what makes us brilliant!

There will be assemblies, lessons and activities to support all learners in their understanding of this, and also to learn some strategies to support ourselves if we aren’t feeling great. I look forward to sharing more with you at the end of next week. If you would like some more information, please follow the link below:

Directly linked to this is the National Online Safety platform that I have been publicising over the last few weeks. It is a fantastic tool and knowledge base to help our wider community learn about how to keep ourselves and our children safe in a digital world.

As adults, we recognise and understand how quickly technology is moving on from when we were younger, however for our learners this is the norm. We work hard to instil messages of how to keep safe, understanding digital footprint and more in school, but the message needs to be consistent. By signing up and watching or reading some of the wealth of information available, as adults we aill be better informed on the impact of the onine world on our children, but also what to look out for and how to deal with any potential issues.

I would urge you all to sign up for your free account using the link below, as we will be sharing regular updates with parents through the platform throughout the year. You can also download the app for your tablet or smartphone for easy access.

Our football team were in action yesterday against Roebuck’s B Team, if you would like to read about how they got on, please head over to our sports blog:

Now onto our celebrations for the week. The catering for this week’s Bucket Filler’s tea party was some delicious angel cake. Those nominated by their teacher joined me for their treat and a drink, along with my weekly tea party questions!

A huge well done to the following children for being nominated by their teachers this week:

N: Lola

R: Georgi

This week saw me hand out 6 Headteacher’s Award for some awesome work across the school.

First this week was in Reception, and was for something that Tommy had done at home. Tommy had loved reading his Hugless Douglas library book that he wanted to use the recipe in the back to bake the same cakes as he did in the book. He followed the recipe perfectly and baked some delicious looking cupcakes. Great reading Tommy, well done!

The next award this week was also in Reception for Sonny, who has been working incredibly hard to learn some of his tricky words. He came to me to show me the ones he had learnt, and he was spending some extra time, during choosing time, learning them with Mrs Lee. Well done Sonny, you’ve been a great Shephalbury LEARNER this week!

The third, fourth and fifth awards went to 3 learners from our Year 4 class, all for the same reason. You will have seen last week that Year 4 have been working on their suspense writing during this sequence of learning, and Melisa, Yumna and Jamila have all excelled in their writing development. Each of them could discuss the learning that they had done to build their authorial techniques, and how they had applied these to their writing. As you will see below, they have all produced some wonderful writing to be proud of. Great work guys…keep it up!

And my final award this week was for Finnley (Y6), who excelled in demonstrating his geographical knowledge this week during an assembly about the Lunar New Year. During the assembly learners were shown 13 flags linked to East and South East Asian countries. He was able to name 11 of the 13! Well done Finnley…fantastic flag knowledge!

I hope that the weather picks up and we are all able to enjoy a nice weekend.

Friday 28th January 2022

Another week has flown by and yet again I have been struck by how well our learners are engaging on a daily basis. My assembly on Monday, once again focused on the theme of being confident in our own abilities and ourselves. Some learners from Year 4 read the story ‘Giraffes Can’t Dance’ by Giles Andreae, where Gerald the Giraffe develops the self-confidence to dance and perform in front of others. We are constantly working to instil and develop our Shephalbury LEARNER attributes throughout our school, and would encourage you to do the same at home.

Once again I would like to draw your attention to the following:

Now onto our celebrations for the week. The catering for this week’s Bucket Filler’s tea party were some delicious Jaffa Cake cake bars. Those nominated by their teacher joined me for their treat and a drink, along with my weekly tea party questions!

A huge well done to the following children for being nominated by their teachers this week:

N: Maison

R: Ralph

Y1: Henry F

Y2: Mckenzie

Y3: Spencer C

Y4: Seth

Y5: Summer

Y6: Ruby

As well as Bucket Fillers, we have handed our Shephalbury LEARNER certificates, shared the attendance data and had a look at the house point totals.

As always our staff have seen pupils from around the school working hard to demonstrate the 7 attributes that make up a Shephalbury LEARNER, reflect, solve, create, grow, risk, think, stretch, grow and risk through the lessons and activities that they have participated in. The children listed below have been nominated by their teachers for being Shephalbury LEARNERS this week, a huge well done to each and every one of them:

Nursery: Arthur- Grow          Reception: Lewis- Grow

Year 1: Eleanor- Think          Year 2: Alfie T- Create

Year 3: William- Reflect        Year 4: George B- Reflect

Year 5: Lewis- Grow              Year 6: Liam G- Create

This week saw me hand out 5 Headteacher’s Award for some brilliant work across the school.

First this week was a member of our Reception class, Alfie. During his child initiated learning time earlier this week, he was unsure what he wanted to do. This led him to begin writing notes to Mrs Lee to ask her what to do. They responded to each other, with Mrs Lee asking Alfie questions and him responding through his writing. He used his phonics well, and was highly engaged in his own independent writing. Well done!

Another member of Reception also received a Headteacher’s award this week. Isabelle was inspired by the class focus on Goldilocks and the 3 Bears that she independently created her own ‘innovated’ story map, where she had changed key elements of the story. She came and retold it to me with fantastic expression and intonation…super work Isabelle!

The third award this week went for some excellent writing in Year 4 to Phoebe. In class they have been developing their suspense writing techniques in their own stories. As you will see below, Phoebe has applied the skills that she has developed and is creating fantastic work. In addition to this she is being a true Shephalbury LEARNER by being reflective and self-editing her own work as she goes with her green pen. Amazing work Phoebe…keep it up!

Next was yet another hard working member of our Reception class, TJ, who was another learner inspired to create their own text map. TJ recorded his morning routine through pictures in the correct sequence, and subsequently retold the events in order. I am really impressed with this independent work…amazing job TJ!

And finally this week was Finley (Y1) for his use of phonics when labelling the parts of a plant in his science lesson. Year 1 have been learning about the different names and functions of the parts of plants. They were challenged to draw their own plant and label it using the correct words. Finley did this and did a great job of sounding out each word correctly. Well done!

I hope that you all enjoy the weekend!

Friday 21st January 2022

The end of another busy week, with lots of things happening both in and out of school. I opened the week with an assembly about being confident in our own abilities. All of our learners, and staff, have done lots of work on building and developing our growth mindset throughout the course of this year. As a Shephalbury LEARNER we recognise that learning is supposed to challenge us, and that we will make mistakes along the way, but having confidence that we have the skills, attributes and support to get there is really important.

I am delighted to be able to share with you that Mrs Lewis gave birth, just before Christmas, to her second child, Ostyn. He is settling into family life in the Lewis household really well!

I am sure that you will all join me in sending huge congratulations to them all!

I featured some photos last week of our School Values Rocks day from last Friday with Rocktopus. Our Shephalbury LEARNER music videos are now produced and ready for viewing. I have seen and heard them in classes around school this week, and they are all great! Why not have a look for yourself:

This afternoon I accompanied Mr Rust and our Year 5 & 6 football team to the EFL Under 11 cup, a national competition run by the football league, with the final being held at Wembley Stadium. Today’s tournament was our local competition to see who would represent Stevenage at the regional tournament.

To find out how they got on, head over to our Sports Blog via the link below.

Our extra-curricular programme for the term has kicked off this week. There is loads on offer, and it has been wonderful to see such a variety of activities being enjoyed across the school. There are still spaces in some of the clubs if your child is still interested. You can see what’s available on Schoolcomms.

I would urge you all to sign up for your free account using the link below, as we will be sharing regular updates with parents through the platform throughout the year. You can also download the app for your tablet or smartphone for easy access.

Now onto our celebrations for the week. The catering for this week’s Bucket Filler’s tea party was provided by Mrs Dean…a huge than you for the delicious Malteser cupcakes! Those nominated by their teacher joined me for their treat and a drink, along with my weekly tea party questions!

A huge well done to the following children for being nominated by their teachers this week:

N: Cheyenne

R: Felicity S

Y1: Darcey

Y2: Lilly

Y3: Maia

Y4: James

Y5: Alex

Y6: Isabel

As well as Bucket Fillers, we have handed our Shephalbury LEARNER certificates, shared the attendance data and had a look at the house point totals.

As always our staff have seen pupils from around the school working hard to demonstrate the 7 attributes that make up a Shephalbury LEARNER, reflect, solve, create, grow, risk, think, stretch, grow and risk through the lessons and activities that they have participated in. The children listed below have been nominated by their teachers for being Shephalbury LEARNERS this week, a huge well done to each and every one of them:

Nursery: Isla - Stretch        Reception: Daniel - Stretch

Year 1: Skylar - Stretch         Year 2: Vinnie - Solve

Year 3: Ephraim -  Grow        Year 4: Uzma - Grow

Year 5: Raegan - Grow         Year 6: Ruby - Reflect

First up this week was Leo (N) who has really enjoyed the focus on traditional tales in Nursery this week. He sat down and created his own story map independently drawing the 3 Little Pigs. We are really proud of you Leo…well done!

Next is a double award winner this week, Felicity S (R) showed some brilliant numbers skills in the EYFS garden. She found the corresponding amounts of stones for each of the numbers to 10 independently. Some great number work Felicity, and a super week with being a Bucket Filler as well. Keep it up!

Moving up to Year 2 with Tommy, who has really impressed me this week for a couple of reasons. He came to me with some writing that he had completed independently at home, applying the use of expanded noun phrases to the story of Stick Man. Not only had he chosen some very good adjectives to describe the different elements of the story, he showed his beautiful handwriting. It is clear how much of a fantastic Shephalbury LEARNER Tommy is going above and beyond with his work at home, and developing his handwriting style fantastically well. Amazing work Tommy!

Finally this week was Raegan (Y5), who worked hard in RE to investigate and learn about the significance of the Seder Plate for Jewish people during Passover. He showed me his work and explained each part on the plate. He had even done his best to copy the names of each element in Hebrew lettering. Super work Raegan…well done!

I hope that you all enjoy the weekend!

Friday 14th January 2022

We have arrived at the end of our first full week of 2022, and there has been a lot of things happening in and around our school!

I have had the pleasure of spending time in all of our classes this week, seeing how well settled and engaged all of our learners are. From Daleks in Year 5, to multiplying and dividing by 4 in Year 3 and Goldilocks sneaking into Reception to steal the 3 bears’ porridge, there are many positive learning experiences across the school.

In addition to our learning across the curriculum we welcomed back Rocktopus today. Each phase, with the help of our favourite rock band, composed and performed songs linked to our Shephalbury LEARNER attributes. Everyone had great fun and we can’t wait to share our music videos with you all soon!

I was also lucky enough this week to accompany Year 2 on their trip to the pantomime, postponed from before Christmas. It was great to see how much they all enjoyed show, made all the better as we had front row seats.

Next week sees the start of our Spring term extra curricular clubs programme. Once again we have a lot on offer for year groups across the school. We are constantly striving to enrich the experiences and provide new opportunities with the clubs that we offer. Please encourage your child to speak to their school councillors if they have any ideas for clubs in the Summer term.

In assembly this week we announced the winners of School Council’s plant pot competition from the end of last year. Councillors voted on their favourite designs, and all of our winners will have some time to come and bring their designs to life on some pots for their classroom plants. A huge well done to the following children:

In our School Council meeting this week, we also discussed what the prize would be for Dragons as our House Champions from last term. There was much debate and discussion, but in the end there was a unanimous decision that Dragons should have a PJ/onesie day next Friday, 21st January.

I would like to take a moment to remind all visitors to the school, that we expect everyone to be wearing a face covering when entering the building for whatever reason (unless exempt). This includes popping into the reception area to speak to the admin team.

Below you will find the Spring term HfL online safety newsletter for parents and carers. I would encourage you to take 5 minutes to have a read as it shares some really useful information supporting you in keeping your children safe online.

Now onto our celebrations for the week. The catering for this week’s Bucket Filler’s tea party were a variety of cupcakes! Those nominated by their teacher joined me for their treat and a drink, along with my weekly tea party questions!

This week saw me hand out 1 Headteacher’s Award for some brilliant observational drawing.

Molly (N) was finding different items in her class and recreating them as images. As you will see from the image below, her scissors are incredibly life-like, having carefully chosen the correct colours to use to finish her design.

Great work Molly!

I hope that you all enjoy the weekend!

Friday 7th January 2022

Welcome back and happy new year to you all!

It has been lovely to see so many smiling, happy faces returning to school after the holidays. I know from having spoken to many of our learners over the last couple of days, that time over the festive period has been mixed for many of us. Despite this, I hope that everyone had the chance to take some time to rest and relax with their families around them.

We have settled back in well, and everyone is eager to go! Learners across the school are already engaging really well with their learning and the term ahead of us. Our Shephalbury LEARNER attributes and growth mindset principles are woven throughout our school, encouraging our learners to develop good quality learning behaviours. I encourage you to discuss these at home and support your child in embracing and demonstrating these on a daily basis.

As we have only been back a couple of days there were no certificates of awards this week.

Enjoy your weekend

Friday 17th December 2021

We have made it to the end of the Autumn Term, and what a busy time we have had!

I know and appreciate how challenging the last few weeks, in particular, have been for many of our staff and families. Having to balance daily life with 2 COVID outbreaks in school has been tricky, but despite the challenges, we have maintained as much high quality provision and support for everyone as possible.

This doesn’t happen by accident, this comes from the strong work ethic and commitment of those within school, along with the support and understanding from our families at home. I say this regularly, but that is because it makes such a huge difference when there are difficult decisions to make, THANK YOU! Having a team like this, that genuinely cares, and having a supportive community, that understand our approach, means that we are able to continually work together to improve and develop our school for everyone who comes here.

The last week has been full of festive fun and activities across the school, despite us not all being able to get together we have all thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Mrs Cropley led our Christmas Assemblies, most of us got to visit the fantastic pantomime at The Gordon Craig Theatre (Year 2 are going in the new year!), took part in Christmas crafts, we all enjoyed a delicious Christmas lunch (thank you Sarah & team), watched the Shephalbury Christmas Showcase, attended discos and a lot more in between. A huge thank you to all of the staff that made all of these great experiences for our school possible.

On a festive note, I am very proud to say that Mina (Y3) appears in the feature film ‘A Boy Called Christmas’ which is available on Netflix and Sky Cinema, a fantastic achievement! I am very much looking forward to settling down and looking out for her when I watch the movie over the holidays with my children.

As we end the term we have a couple of staff members to recognise. Firstly a welcome back to Mrs Oustayiannis, who has returned to teach alongside Mrs Cropley in Year 4.

Also on a staffing front, we are saying farewell to Mrs McCullagh, who after 5 years is leaving us to be able to be closer to home supporting her family. As anyone who has worked with Mrs McCullagh will tell you, she has been a fantastic staff member in our EYFS and will be greatly missed! I am sure that you will join me and wish her lots of luck and happiness in the future.

Please see below for a message form our Chair of Governors, Cameron Smith:

Dear Parents and Carers

We have had a busy term, Governors attended the autumn visit from our professional improvement partner last month and the feedback was excellent. She was impressed with our working practices and, crucially, her external assessment matched our own internal self evaluation. On the day she observed a number of classes, spoke with staff and also reviewed many exercise books; however it was her discussions with our children which left the biggest impression – all of them able to enthusiastically talk about the Shephalbury LEARNER.

There is so much evidence of the LEARNER inside the classrooms, and the influence on the broad and balanced curriculum targets can be seen throughout. Governors have been into school for our link visits through this term and we have seen for ourselves how the schools vision and strategic aims drives outcomes for our children.  Governors and staff alike are committed to providing our children with the best education possible.

We are currently recruiting for new Governors and I would love to hear from anyone who is interested in doing more. Schools all over the country need enthusiastic and engaged parents to become Governors and to play a part in the schools future. Please contact me through the school office, you do not need any professional experience in education in fact bringing your own skill set serves to strengthen the Governing Body.

Finally from all of us, may we wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a happy, healthy and prosperous New Year.

Thank you to those people who have volunteered to be volunteer readers. We will be in contact with you in the new year to get the wheels in motion!

If you are a parent, carer, grandparent or older sibling and would like to volunteer an hour or more each week in the Spring term we’d love to hear from you.

We would provide guidance and training for all volunteers. If you would like to help, please let us know by completing the survey via the link below.

There are still places at the Kidfit holiday camp, which is running at school throughout the Christmas holidays. There will be multisports activities and Christmas themed arts and crafts. If you would like more information please take a look at the flyer or booking site via the links below:

Now onto our celebrations for the week. This week Mr Kipling provided the catering for Bucket Filler’s tea party, there was a selection of festive treats! Those nominated by their teacher joined me for their treat and a drink, along with my weekly tea party questions!

A huge well done to the following children for being nominated by their teachers this week:

Year 3: Tyler- Create             Year 4: Riley- Create

Year 5: Ella- Create               Year 6: Finley- Reflect

There are no Headteacher’s awards this week, but there are a few special mentions that I would like to give out to Year 2. They have had a tough couple of weeks with COVID hitting this class quite badly in the lead up to the end of term. However, everyone who has been in school in Year 2 over the last couple of weeks, have been fantastic! There has been lots of changes to their day, but they have all contributed well and got on with their work regardless.

I have been sent a couple of bits that I wanted to share with you all. Emily, sadly, missed out on the recording for The Shephalbury Showcase, but had been rehearsing the Year 2 song at home. She sent me a special version that I can share with you all below.

Also taking their learning home with them was Alfie T, who after learning about the nativity story, went home and created a stable scene out of Lego.

I hope that you are all able to enjoy a fantastic festive break with your family and friends. Please stay safe and we look forward to seeing you all back here on Thursday 6th January.

Friday 10th December 2021

As we come to the end of the penultimate school week of 2021, we certainly have had a lot going on!

Our classes have been busy preparing and recording their parts for our Shephalbury Christmas Showcase, which will be released next Wednesday. They have also be practicing songs to be sung at church next week.

There is lots of excitement in the air with Christmas approaching, and this includes the activities that are planned in and around school for next week. A letter was sent out today to outline our updated plans for next week, and we hope that these won’t be effected any further. Please bear in mind that if there are alterations and changes these will be made in the best interests of the health and safety of our school community and communicated to you at the earliest possible opportunity.

A huge thank you to those of you that have contributed so far to Shep’s Reverse Advent Calendar in support of the charity Feed Up, Warm Up. They are a charity, selected by our school council, that support homeless people across North Hertfordshire. We will be continuing to welcome donations up to Wednesday of next week, so please place your donations in Shep’s box on your way around the playground in the morning.

https://www.facebook.com/feedupwarmup/

https://justgiving.com/feedupwarmup

A huge thank you to everyone who contributed to our Christingle collection this week, the £143 raised from this will also be forwarded to Feed Up, Warm Up.

Our kitchen team from HCL have had some great news this week, a 5 star environmental standards rating has been confirmed by an inspection! In addition to this, our school was recently recognised in the annual HCL awards for our community engagement work. This relates back to the work we were doing with Roebuck Nursing home, and our proposed work in setting up a gardening club linked with them in the future. This is a fantastic achievement by the school, and we thank everyone who has contributed to it, in particular Sarah Walker and her team in the kitchen.

I requested volunteers last week to support us in our drive to provide some extra reading time with learners across the school. If you are a parent, carer, grandparent or older sibling and would like to volunteer an hour or more each week in the Spring term we’d love to hear from you.

We would provide guidance and training for all volunteers. If you would like to help, please let us know by completing the survey via the link below.

Kidfit will be running a holiday camp at school throughout the Christmas holidays, where there will be multisports activities and Christmas themed arts and crafts. IF you would like more information please take a look at the flyer or booking site via the links below:

Now onto our celebrations for the week. The catering for this week’s Bucket Filler’s tea party was provided by Mr Klein who provided a selection of chocolate cupcakes and chocolate chip cookies…they went down very well, thank you! Those nominated by their teacher joined me for their treat and a drink, along with my weekly tea party questions!

A huge well done to the following children for being nominated by their teachers this week:

Year 3: Mia- Grow                             Year 4: Jamila- Reflect

Year 5: Cade- Think                          Year 6: Ellis- Stretch

This week there have been 3 learners who have visited me to receive Headteacher’s Awards, and once again, both were for learners at the lower end of our school!

First this week was Emily (Y2), who completed some fantastic English work. The class had been innovating a Michael Rosen poem using alliterative language and Emily produced some excellent alliterative phrases. Super work Emily…well done!

Today Reception have been set a series of Christmas themed challenges in their phonics, writing and maths. Katalea has excelled in these throughout the morning, independently accessing all of the challenges, solving maths problems using manipulatives and using her phonics to label some festive images. Amazing work Katalea…keep it up!

And finally in Reception is Esmie, who following on from her Shephalbury LEARNER award for 'create' a couple of weeks ago, has continued to be very creative. This afternoon she designed and made a Christmas pudding independently and described the parts to me...I particularly liked the topping of custard, a cherry and holly leaves! Great work Esmie!

I hope that you all enjoy the weekend,

Friday 3rd December 2021

We have arrived in December with some wintery weather this week. As usual, there has been a buzz of learning throughout the school, and now it is quite clearly mixed, for many, with the anticipation of Christmas. Our trees and lights are up at school, the post box is out ready to receive cards and classes are busy preparing their contributions to The Shephalbury Showcase, which will be released on Wednesday 15th December for everyone to enjoy.

Our Year 2 class this week took the trip to St Peter’s church to learn about The Christmas Journey. They all had a great time learning about Mary and Joseph’s journey to Bethlehem, making crowns and having a snack!

I am still liaising regularly with the public health team at HCC to monitor the current COVID situation within the school, and to support with recommendations for the decisions that we are making in light of this. As it stands we are hoping that all of our plans for the last week of term, in relation to the Christmas activities, will be able to continue as planned. However, if there are alterations and changes these will be made in the best interests of the health and safety of our school community and communicated to you at the earliest possible opportunity.

I hope that you took the time to read the information sent out this week regarding our reverse advent collection this year. Our School Council selected a really worthy cause this year, the charity Feed Up, Warm Up:

‘Feed Up Warm Up is a North Hertfordshire based charity supporting those who are homeless and those at risk of homelessness. We operate 2 weekly drop in centres in Hitchin and Stevenage where anybody is welcome to come and spend the evening with us. We offer live music, counselling services, a hot meal, free haircuts, food parcels, addiction advice and a warm welcoming smile and a chat. We support on average 100 guests a week between both drop in services. We also have an outreach team who respond to local referrals from other charities and agencies. During the pandemic we have reached out to local struggling families who have been directly impacted by the pandemic by delivering weekly food parcels and other support services. Through this particular service we have made up and delivered over 2600 food parcels which equates to 11,000 individuals since April 2020. We are funded purely by donations from kind members of the public and local businesses. Our belief is that all people should be treated with dignity, respect, kindness, equality and included in the local community.

Our School Council have had a busy week, as they were also lucky enough to contribute to another fantastic community project in Shephalbury Park. They were invited by the environmental team at Stevenage Borough Council to help plant a new community orchard. The orchard is a part of the council’s strategy to support the Queen’s Green Canopy, marking her Platinum Jubilee in 2022. The aim of the orchard is that in years to come the local community will be free to come and benefit from the fruits that grow within the park.

It was a chilly Monday afternoon, but our committed councillors wrapped up and planted 11 trees, including apples, pears, plums and damsons. They all contributed to filling the holes with soil and adding some bark mulch to the area, along with two of our local councillors, Councillor Howells and Councillor Bainbridge. They had great fun, and have participated in leaving a legacy for our local community that will be there for many years to come!

Reading is one of the key skills our children develop at school and is fundamental to success later in their education. As we hope that school continues to return to more normal times in the new year, we would love to invite parents, carers and grandparents to become volunteer readers to support and help our learners. If you could spare an hour or more each week, ideally 1-2pm or 2-3pm we would love to hear from you.

We will provide some guidance and training, and you will then hear a consistent group of children read on a regular basis.

You will find the role incredibly rewarding through being involved and seeing first-hand the progress our learners make across the year. If you are interested in volunteering for this role, please click the link below to leave your details and someone will contact you when we return after the holidays.

I wrote last week requesting some feedback from our first set of Learning Review Meetings using the School Cloud system. Thank you to those who have responded so far, but I would welcome as much feedback as possible to ensure that we understand how you felt regarding the system and structure of the meetings. I would really appreciate if you could take a couple of minutes to complete the very short survey via the link below.

Kidfit will be running a holiday camp at school throughout the Christmas holidays, where there will be multisports activities and Christmas themed arts and crafts. IF you would like more information please take a look at the flyer or booking site via the links below:

Now onto our celebrations for the week. The catering for this week’s Bucket Filler’s tea party was provided by Mr Rust who provided a selection of chocolate and rainbow cupcakes…they went down very well, thank you! Those nominated by their teacher joined me for their treat and a drink, along with my weekly tea party questions!

A huge well done to the following children for being nominated by their teachers this week:

N: Arthur

R: Sonny

Y1: Eddie

Y2: Jake

Y3: Sereny

Y4: Leanna

Y5: Milly

Y6: Amelia Q

As well as Bucket Fillers, we have handed our Shephalbury LEARNER certificates, shared the attendance data and had a look at the house point totals.

As always our staff have seen pupils from around the school working hard to demonstrate the 7 attributes that make up a Shephalbury LEARNER, reflect, solve, create, grow, risk, think, stretch, grow and risk through the lessons and activities that they have participated in. Year 3: Olly- Reflect              Year 4: Bella- Stretch

Year 5: Rhyder- Grow                       Year 6: Owen- Create

I had the absolute pleasure of handing out 5 Headteacher’s Awards this week, all to learners at the lower end of our school!

First this week were Finley and Olivia (Y1), who proved themselves to be fantastic Shephalbury LEARNERs in their maths work. They both worked completely independently to order numbers to 20. They were both incredibly proud of their work, and rightly so! They also talked to me about the other work that they had been doing in maths and how this linked to their work on ordering.

Next up was Alfie (R) who has been a really committed Shephalbury LEARNER both at school and at home recently. He has spent time at home learning to read and write the phase 2 and some of the phase 3 tricky words. This is a fantastic attitude to have to your learning Alfie, especially as we haven’t started to learn these in school quite yet…keep it up!

Also in Reception this week was Sophie, for some home learning as well. She was so happy to celebrate Miss Martin’s birthday that she made her a card at home. Not only did she make a card, but independently wrote in it and clearly read out her message. A lovely thing to do, and fantastic progress in your reading and writing Sophie…super work!

Finally, this week is Ethan (R) for being an absolute superstar following an accident at home. I received the email below to explain how:

‘The other week I fell over and home and broke my ankle. As I fell I hit my head and was knocked unconscious. It was only myself and Ethan in the house and he came straight over to me and shook me until I woke up. The then got the dog out of the front room as she was jumping all over me. In this time I had passed out again from the pain. He then called his Nanny off of his iPad and told her what had happened and that I needed help. I then managed to call my partner to come home. Whilst we waited for him to get home, Ethan stayed on the phone to my mum, but also got himself ready for school, helped me move over to the sofa and made sure I was ok.’

This is an incredible demonstration of remaining calm, calling for help and being kind and supportive in a difficult situation. Such a brilliant showing of how caring and mature you were Ethan, we are all really proud of you!

I hope that you all enjoy the weekend,

Ben Conway

Friday 26th November 2021

The end of an eventful week here at Shephalbury Park, and one which has seen us having to implement a few extra measures to safeguard our community. I would like to firstly thank the staff in and around our school for being flexible and adapting at very short notice to the things that we have put in place. As I have said many times before, having a team that is always working in the best interests of the community is one of the strengths of our school…and it is at times like now that really highlights this.

I would also like to take a moment to thank you as parents for taking a cautious approach with your children and when on site. As outlined in my letter earlier this week, we need to be pro-active in safeguarding ourselves and thank you for supporting us with this.

This week also saw us hold our first set of Learning Review Meetings using the School Cloud system. I hope that you found these conversations useful in understanding how your child/ren are currently accessing their learning, and their next steps. I would be grateful if you could spare a couple of minutes to complete a short survey to help us understand how to improve our use of the system in the future.

Now onto our celebrations for the week. The catering for this week’s Bucket Filler’s tea party was provided by Mrs Cropley who provided a range of festive themed cakes to mark the start of advent this weekend …thank you! Those nominated by their teacher joined me for their treat and a drink, along with my weekly tea party questions!

A huge well done to the following children for being nominated by their teachers this week:

Y4: Phoebe

Y5: Ella

As always our staff have seen pupils from around the school working hard to demonstrate the 7 attributes that make up a Shephalbury LEARNER, reflect, solve, create, grow, risk, think, stretch, grow and risk through the lessons and activities that they have participated in. The children listed below have been nominated by their teachers for being Shephalbury LEARNERS this week, a huge well done to each and every one of them:

Nursery: Archie- Think                     Reception: Esmie- Create

Year 1: Rae- Reflect              Year 2: Jessica- Grow

Year 3: Ali-May- Think                     Year 4: Viktor- Stretch

Year 5: Lewis- Reflect                       Year 6: Teddy- Solve

There was one Headteacher's award this week, handed out right at the end of Friday.

Ashton (R) has really impressed both myself and Miss Martin with his independent writing of a story. He tried really hard to sound out each word and illustrated it really well. Great writing Ashton, well done!

I hope that you all enjoy the weekend,

Friday 19th November 2021

A fantastic end to another fabulous week here at Shephalbury Park, where we embarked on our annual ramble around Shephalbury Park in aid of Children in Need. It was great to see the whole school out together, enjoying some fresh air and physical activity. A big thank you to our Year 6 class, who support some of our youngest school members in Nursery with their walk around the park, chatting to them and encouraging them on their way around. As always, thank you for the donations that you have made to us to pass onto Children in Need…if you would like more information about where you money goes please click here.

In addition, this week we have been taking part in Just Talk Week- with this year’s theme being ‘Kindness to self – Kindness to others’. Just Talk is a positive mental health programme across Hertfordshire which involves many groups working together to support young people in recognising that it’s ok to not be ok, feeling comfortable and confident in talking about mental health,  equipping them to have tools for looking after their emotional wellbeing, and to know how to access support when it’s needed.

As a school, we already promote positive mental health amongst our learners on a daily basis, and have many strategies in place to support this. This week we have enhanced many areas around school to increase awareness further. We have introduced the reading bench, where you can snuggle up with a blanket and cushion to read books supporting our understanding of emotions and feelings. We have posted some positive mental health tips all around the school, to support in identifying and recognising how to stay positive, we have introduced a ‘thank you’ box, for anyone to write a postcard of thanks to another person and we have introduced a new member to our school community…Mr Phil Good, who is our new Wellbeing Ambassador.

Across the school, everyone has taken part in some sessions and activities to further discuss and support this, and this work to support everyone will continue as we move through the rest of the academic year.

Next week we will be hosting our virtual Learning Review Meetings for parents. At the time of writing, the vast majority of people have signed up for appointments using our new application School Cloud. There are still appointments available, if you are yet to sign up, you can do so by following the link below. A form will be sent home today with information regarding your child’s attainment, strengths and next steps within the curriculum so far this year. This information will form the basis of the conversations with teachers, please have it to hand when speaking to them. We also request that you find a quiet space, away from the child that we are discussing, as this will ensure that there is a focused discussion around their learning and how we can work together to support them in meeting their next steps.

Now onto our celebrations for the week. The catering for this week’s Bucket Filler’s tea party was provided by Mrs Smith who created some wonderful Pudsey cupcakes…thank you! Those nominated by their teacher joined me for their treat and a drink, along with my weekly tea party questions!

A huge well done to the following children for being nominated by their teachers this week:

N: Stefan

R: Ryver

Y1: George

Y2: Kyla M

Y3: Spencer B

Y4: George B

Y5: Zafran

Y6: Ellis

As well as Bucket Fillers, we have handed our Shephalbury LEARNER certificates, shared the attendance data and had a look at the house point totals.

As always our staff have seen pupils from around the school working hard to demonstrate the 7 attributes that make up a Shephalbury LEARNER, reflect, solve, create, grow, risk, think, stretch, grow and risk through the lessons and activities that they have participated in. The children listed below have been nominated by their teachers for being Shephalbury LEARNERS this week, a huge well done to each and every one of them:

Nursery: Cheyenne- Grow                Reception: Ashton- Think

Year 1: Darcey- Grow                       Year 2: Charlie- Risk

Year 3: Lilly- Stretch             Year 4: Melody- Stretch

Year 5: Jayden- Create                     Year 6: Miles- Create

This week saw me hand out 7 Headteacher’s Awards for excellent work across the curriculum.

First up this week was Bella (Y4) for some brilliant home learning based on their topic, Ancient Egypt. Bella used her time over the weekend to research and create a wonderful fact file and map to show some key information relating to the buildings and areas around Egypt. Great work Bella, well done!

Next in was Fredrico (Y3), who we are really proud of this week. He has been making an extra effort with his reading recently and this effort has really paid off. He has shown himself to be a true Shephalbury LEARNER and not given up even when he has found it tough! He has progressed through his reading levels at a super rate over the last few weeks, a brilliant achievement…keep it up!

The next recipient is Fredrico’s sister, Melissa (YR)…she has really impressed Miss Martin this week with her commitment to independently applying the maths skills that our Reception class have been learning this week. She has worked to develop her understanding of part-whole models really well, and reflected on the errors she made to correct them! Great work Melissa!

Further up the school in Year 4 they have been focusing their English lessons on innovating the story of Egyptian Cinderella. They have all thoroughly enjoyed writing their own edited versions, but 2 members of the class have really shone this week. Firstly, Caleb should be proud of his well-structured version. He demarcated his sentences perfectly and worked really hard to independently complete his work. Anjolaoluwa received his award for the fantastic authorial voice that he maintained throughout his writing. His use of fronted adverbials and wide range of vocabulary made for a really engaging read. Super writing boys…well done!

And finally were two members of our Year 5 cohort for some brilliant science work. Kian T and Lewis, along with the rest of their class, have been investigating thermal insulators and conducted an investigation to try and find suitable materials for insulating a lunch box. They presented the data really well in their line graphs, and went on to write some excellent explanations and reasonings for their findings…super work!

I hope that you all enjoy the weekend!

Friday 12th November 2021

A damp end to another busy week here at Shephalbury Park! There was a lovely buzz around the school this morning as siblings and individuals had their photos taken in the hall. There were lots of smart looking children and quite a few cheesy grins on show!

We came together as a school yesterday, like many across the country, to recognise and observe a period of silence in remembrance of those who have given their lives fighting for this country. We reflected on the significant contributions that our armed forces and emergency services have made, and still make, in protecting us and enabling us to live in a country with the freedoms that we have.

I have spent much time visiting lessons across the school this week, and have seen so much fantastic learning. From making World War 2 style potato dumplings in Years 5 & 6, to creating a wonderful poppy collage in EYFS, there is a breadth of learning taking place across the curriculum.

Not only are the learners across the school engaging well in the skills led lessons that the teachers are facilitating for them, they are also talking about their learning really well. Our learners are really developing their growth mindsets, and speak about the enjoyment of taking risks in their learning and challenging themselves.

This is great, as it shows how our learners are embodying our Shephalbury LEARNER principles in their lessons on a daily basis. The understanding that learning is not always easy is vitally important, as it ensures that our learners are determined to overcome these challenges, reflect on their learning and improve. My assembly this week focused on making ‘good mistakes’, i.e. making mistakes through the learning process, but reflecting on them, learning from them and overcoming them by mastering the skill.

We will be holding Learning Review Meetings (parent consultations) in the week beginning 22nd November. Due to the current COVID situation, these will be held remotely through School Cloud. Parents have been sent registration and log in instructions, and bookings will open from 4pm this afternoon. Each of the reviews will last for 9minutes, and will be based on your child’s learning so far this term. We will be sending home a Learning Review notes to structure the conversations that we have with you. You can register your details via the link below:

School Council would like to remind everyone about their plant pot competition, they are looking for as many entries as possible to ensure that what is created looks fantastic in each classroom. Each entry will earn a house point, and winners from each class will earn 5 house points each!

Now onto our celebrations for the week. The catering for this week’s Bucket Filler’s tea party was provided by Mrs Mutch who created some delightful remembrance themed poopy cupcakes…thank you! Those nominated by their teacher joined me for their treat and a drink, along with my weekly tea party questions!

A huge well done to the following children for being nominated by their teachers this week:

N: Lola

R: Oliver

Y1: Isabella

Y2: Emma

Y3: Charlie

Y4: Ben

Y5: Max

Y6: Finnley

As well as Bucket Fillers, we have handed our Shephalbury LEARNER certificates, shared the attendance data and had a look at the house point totals.

As always our staff have seen pupils from around the school working hard to demonstrate the 7 attributes that make up a Shephalbury LEARNER, reflect, solve, create, grow, risk, think, stretch, grow and risk through the lessons and activities that they have participated in. The children listed below have been nominated by their teachers for being Shephalbury LEARNERS this week, a huge well done to each and every one of them:

Nursery: John-Boy- Stretch              Reception: Alfie- Think

Year 1: Henry- Stretch                      Year 2: Lilly- Risk

Year 3: Billy-Joe- Create                   Year 4: Leanna- Stretch

Year 5: Dylan- Solve                         Year 6: Liam R- Grow

This week saw me hand out 6 Headteacher’s Awards for excellent work across the curriculum.

The three were all for learners in Year 2. Lenny B, Emily and Alfie T have worked really hard in their sequence of English lessons based on the fairy tale of Cinderella. They have been innovating the story (taking a known story and changing key elements of it to make it their own) and have all re-written it including some of their own descriptive techniques, including expanded noun phrases. They were all really proud to show me their work, and we are proud of them for being great Shephalbury LEARNERS!

Next this week were two learners from our Year 1 class, also for some fantastic writing. Both Harvey and Eric wrote really well when using time conjunctions, making sure that they used the key words, but also by using their phonic knowledge to sound out the other words in their sentences. Super work boys…well done for using your phonic skills in your writing!

And finally this week was Melisa (Year 4) who has excelled this week in her investigations of the Egyptian number system. Much like Egyptian writing (hieroglyphics), the number system that was used by the Egyptians was made up of pictures and symbols. Melisa used her investigative skills to find out about this system and applied it to some challenges in her History lessons this week. Well done Melisa!

I know that it may seem a long way off at the moment, but the festive period is fast approaching, and as always at Shephalbury Park there is a lot planned during this time. Please keep a look out next week for a letter that outlines what is happening, when it is happening, and who is involved for the planned activities during December.

I hope that you all enjoy the weekend!

Friday 5th November 2021

Welcome back to our first week of the new half term. I hope that you all enjoyed a nice break last week!

We started the week with a bit of a bang…learners across the school participated in our Diwali learning day, where we learnt about the history and traditions of this important festival from different religions. You will see from the images below that time was spent creating art, making and tasting food, and making lamps.

We would like to wish the members of our community, and anyone else celebrating, a very happy Diwali!

In addition to learning about Diwali and our regular curriculum across the school, Years 3 & 4 have had a brilliant day of experiential learning with their Egyptian Learning Day today. Everyone was dressed to impress, with some incredible outfits on show, and some wonderful activities exploring different elements of Egyptian life from thousands of years ago.

There was also some amazing Jackson Pollock style firework painting taking place in Nursery this morning. I watched (from a distance) as learners flicked and sprayed their paint to create a lovely collaborative piece of work that will be used in the classroom.

If you would like to see more of what is going on in our classes across the school, follow the link below to look at our class blogs:

My assembly, at the beginning of the week, linked directly to our Shephalbury LEARNER attributes and focused on the power of yet. For all of us, it is vital that we recognise the importance of a growth mindset and persevere when we find things difficult. The assembly reflected on the learning process, and the difficult journey that this can sometimes be. The bumps in the road are learning opportunities, and learning happens when we overcome these bumps and achieve new things.

In school, we encourage our learners to recognise that the things we are learning are not ‘things we can’t do’ but are ‘things that we can’t do YET’ and by using the attributes of the Shephalbury LEARNER they will be able to achieve these. I would encourage you to use this language with your children at home when they find things difficult, as learning takes place in all environments and when we are challenged by things we can’t do yet!

A fantastic example of this was demonstrated in assembly this week by Ethan (Y4) who has displayed many of our Shephalbury LEARNER attributes in learning an incredible new skill. Not only has he mastered the art of solving a Rubik’s cube, he can complete the task in just one minute. The whole school sat in awe of Ethan as he showed his skill to everyone during assembly, and he received a fantastic reception upon completing it. This is a fantastic demonstration of a growth mindset and determination to achieve something new, well done Ethan!

Our School Council have been meeting weekly since last half term to discuss many different aspects of school life. One thing which they are really keen on is getting more plants into the classrooms around school. Seth shared with us that having plants in a room increases the air quality by 50% and supports people’s wellbeing. With this in mind School Council have decided to buy plants for each class and have set up a plant pot designing competition. The winning designers will get to take part in a fun afternoon where they will bring their designs to life ready to be planted up and put in their classroom.

Each child has been given a paper copy of the letter and entry form. Further copies can be downloaded below, or collected from the box in school.

Now onto our celebrations for the week. The catering for this week’s Bucket Filler’s tea party was provided by Mrs McKenzie who created some amazing bonfire cakes with added gingerbread people with sparklers…thank you! Those nominated by their teacher joined me for their treat and a drink, along with my weekly tea party questions!

A huge well done to the following children for being nominated by their teachers this week:

N: Dominica

R: Phoebe

Y1: Matthew

Y2: Max

Y3: Sofia

Y4: Damon

Y5: Ava

Y6: Katie

As well as Bucket Fillers, we have handed our Shephalbury LEARNER certificates, shared the attendance data and had a look at the house point totals.

Year 5: Ruby- Reflect                        Year 6: Noah- Solve

This week saw me hand out 4 Headteacher’s Awards for excellent work across the curriculum.

The first award was handed out to Liam R (Y6) for his fantastic work during Diwali Learning Day on Monday. His class were tasked with creating a symmetrical rangoli pattern using rice and lentils. Miss Cordner was particularly impressed by Liam’s concentration and focus throughout the activity. Well done Liam!

Next was another of our Year 6 learners, Alan. He had furthered his art learning at home, creating some lovely silhouette images with blended watercolours for the sky. This is something our older learners had done in relation to their learning around World War II. A great commitment to furthering your learning at home Alan, well done!

One of youngest pupils was next for an award this week, TJ (Reception) came to me early this week with some fantastic independent writing. In class, they had been discussing the noises that fireworks make, and TJ took himself off to the writing table and used his phonic knowledge to write the words that he thought of. Amazing work TJ!

The final recipient of a Headteacher’s Award this week was Roma, who received her award in assembly. In the week prior to half term, Roma represented our School at the annual Stevenage Singing Day event, which brings together pupils from across the schools in the town to learn some songs and put on a performance at the end of the day. Roma was a fantastic ambassador for Shephalbury Park, both in her attitude to the activities of the day and in her behaviour. Thank you Roma, and well done…we are all really proud of you!

I know that many of you will go to organised displays or hold your own at home or with friends. Please remember to take sensible precautions for yourselves and your families if you are around fireworks this weekend. For extra information and some top tips please have a look at the websites below:

I hope that you all have a great weekend,

Thursday 21st October 2021

We have all made it to the end of the first half term of the 2021-2022 academic year! It has been an incredibly busy 7½ weeks for everyone involved here at Shephalbury Park and many things to be positive about.

Our Hertfordshire Improvement Partner, Carole Hinstridge, who visits our school on a termly basis, joined us this week. She works with myself, and the rest of the staff, to evaluate the work that we are doing to develop and improve the work of the school. Our focus for the visit was looking at the latest school development of writing. I wrote in my blog a couple of weeks ago that we are now using the sequences and structures of Talk 4 Writing, and we went on a learning walk around the school to assess the impact that this is having.

It was fantastic to see how well our learners are rising to the expectations that we are setting of them within their writing. They are all enjoying the processes in developing their writing further and this is evident in the progress that we are seeing in the writing that is being produced. Alongside this many of our learners are now regularly demonstrating and speaking about being Shephalbury LEARNERS, and understanding how this is having an impact on their learning. Carole was highly complementary of the progress that we are making as a school in the areas of key developments, and we are looking forward seeing more progress with this in the coming months.

As always, the progress and success of any developments within school are down to the hard work and commitment of the entire staff team. I have said it many times before, but the desire and determination by our staff at Shephalbury to do the best that they can for our learning community is amazing. They all care deeply and go the extra mile in all that they do, and we are very lucky to have a team that work in this way…thank you!

Within an inclusive and multicultural society, it is vitally important that we all educate ourselves to ensure that acceptance and equality are at the heart of it. Our learning over the last few weeks has focused on further developing our understanding of, and celebrating Black History. Across the school, we have learnt about significant individuals, as well as exploring themes such as human rights, identity, trade, modern Africa, The Caribbean and British culture and heritage. Learners have been fully engaged in all areas of the curriculum, and taken much from the learning that has taken place.

We have had some lovely news in the last week, Mrs Hart gave birth to her first child, Everly at the end of last week. Huge congratulations to Mrs Hart, her husband Tom and their new addition.

I am sure that you will all be aware of the fact that we have been supporting the Foodshed with our harvest appeal this year. Your support and response has been amazing! A massive thank you to everyone who donated something for those in need. As you will see from the pictures below we have collected many items that will be gratefully received by the charity. Many thanks to Mrs Spiller, our community champion, for organising the collection.

We also welcomed Reverend Kate Sharples to school today to lead our harvest assembly. She spoke with the children regarding the significance of harvest and we sang songs together. We were also treated to Mr Hobbs’ famous harvest loaf as a centrepiece to our display, thank you!

With half term coming up next week, you may be looking for something to get you out into the fresh air. Claire Smith, parent and governor, has put together a Halloween Hunt around Shephalbury Park for families to take part in. There are 6 letters hiding around the park for you to find and make the Halloween themed word. Thank you for creating this, and good luck to anyone who takes on the challenge!

Now onto our celebrations for the week. The catering for this week’s Bucket Filler’s tea party was provided by Mrs Ramus, who reliably informs me that the bakes were created by her dad…thank you! The Halloween chocolate brownies with googly eyes went down very well with all who tried one.

A huge well done to the following children for being nominated by their teachers this week:

N: Maison

R: Felicity B

Y1: Olivia

Y2: Vinnie

Y3: Jude

Y4: Noorisha

Y5: Emily

Y6: Alan

As well as Bucket Fillers, we have handed our Shephalbury LEARNER certificates, shared the attendance data and had a look at the house point totals for the end of this half term.

Year 3: William- Think                                  Year 4: George P- Think

Year 5: Hannah- Think                                 Year 6: Logan- Think

This week saw me hand out 2 Headteacher’s Awards, both for some great writing.

First of all was to Lewis (Y6) for some exceptionally good persuasive writing as a part of their RE learning. Year 6 were tasked with writing a letter to a key religious figure to help with a modern day issue. Lewis wrote to Buddha to ask for help with panic buying and deforestation. It was a great letter…well done Lewis!

And secondly was Riley (Y4) for his excellent biographical writing about Walter Tull. He had researched the Life of Walter and carefully planned his writing. Once he had done this and refined it, Riley presented it beautifully in the form of a poster. Great work Riley!

After half term we will be supporting the Royal British Legion with their annual poppy appeal by selling poppies at school.

As we enter half term I would like to wish you all a restful and safe week at home with your families. I look forward to welcoming you all back to school, refreshed and eager to go on Monday 1st November!

Friday 15th October 2021

We have made it to another Friday, and with one more week to go until half term we are seeing some fantastic learning taking place throughout the school!

Over the last couple of days I have listened to some rather inspiring talks given at the Headteacher’s conference, and there have been many things to take on board and learn from. Scientist Kevin Fong gave a particularly good talk on the importance and relevance of science in our everyday lives. He ended with talk with a quote from Professor Stephen Hawking which I feel aligns really well with our Shephalbury LEARNER attributes and growth mindset principles:

Now onto our celebrations for the week. Mrs Dean enjoyed the opportunity to hold today’s tea party in my absence, and this week’s cakes were provided by Miss Gibson. Thank youy for the delicious cupcakes that were provided!

A huge well done to the following children for being nominated by their teachers this week:

N: Isla

R: Teddy

Y1: Florence

Y2: Tommy

Y3: Joshua

Y4: Nevaeh

Y5: Maya

Y6: Lewis

Year 5: Joe- Solve                         Year 6: Archie- Grow

This week saw me hand out 2 Headteacher’s Awards.

First up this week was Molly (Y2) who has really enjoyed the Katie Morag stories that Year 2 have been basing their writing on. She has enjoyed it so much that she has written and illustrated her own Katie Morag book at home. It was fantastic to read it , and the pictures were brilliant…well done Molly!

The second award was for Kyrillos (Y4) and his fantastically constructed sweet pyramid. Inspired by their creative curriculum topic of Ancient Egypt, Kyrillos initially created a skittles pyramid to share with his friends. This, however, needed some further work, and he persevered and listened to the feedback given by his teachers and created something fantastic to share with his friends. Awesome work!

I hope that you all have a great weekend!

Year 5: Ezme- Create                                    Year 6: Jamie- Think

This week saw me hand out 5 Headteacher’s Awards for a variety of fantastic reasons.

The first award was handed out to Kian (Y4). As a regular attendee at our Tea Pot provision after school, Kian has developed an interest in nurturing and growing vegetables in our vegetable plots around school. This week he harvested hi first ever pumpkin, something to be very proud of…well done Kian!

Another member of Year 4 who has been rewarded this week is Seth, who is really enjoying his learning about Ancient Egypt. After performing his own research and creating a fact file about the pyramids of Ancient Egypt, Seth made his own gingerbread pyramid structure. I was extremely impressed by the construction of this, and I am reliably informed by the Year 4 pupils that is was very tasty as well! Great work Seth!

The next 2 awards are for some brilliant improvements in their writing. Both Alessia (Y5) and Melody (Y4) have been working really hard at improving both their handwriting and the content of their writing. It was really clear looking over the work that both girls had done so far this term how much progress they have made already. Amazing work girls!

And my final award this week went to Albert (Reception) not only was he demonstrating many of our Shephalbury LEARNER attributes including create, he persevered when gluing and making his ‘conker critter’. As you will see below, Albert had used a variety of different resources to create this, and continued going even when some of his parts repeatedly wouldn’t stick together. A great attitude to have Albert…well done!

I hope that you all have a great weekend!

Friday 1st October 2021

As we enter October on a bit of a dreary note, at school I have seen so many brilliant thigs throughout the week.

Last week we all got together in blue to support Mrs Smith in her challenge of completing 1,000,000 steps in aid of Diabetes UK. Along with everyone looking great, we managed to raise a brilliant £303 for the charity. Thank you to everyone who made a donation. To see where the money we raised goes please follow the link below:

We continued our charitable support this week by recognising the Big Coffee Morning in aid of Macmillan. Everyone was treated to a cake at break time…a huge thank you to everyone who donated cakes and made a contribution to buy one. I will update you on the total raised next week.

We have been very fortunate this year to have benefited from some additional grant funding from Stevenage Community Trust. We have invested this money in the work that we do with our School Family Worker Charlotte. She works with groups of pupils at school in a variety of circumstances, as well as providing additional support for families in their own homes. If you would like to find out about the great work that Stevenage Community Trust does around our town please follow the link below:

https://www.stevenagecommunitytrust.org/

I have requested over the last few weeks that all of our families take time to read, discuss and understand our expectations of them concerning their behaviour and commitment to learning as a part of our community, and complete the online form. Thank you to those of you who have already completed this.

A part of our agreement sets out our expectations about the use of social media and messaging groups by parents. I would urge all parents to respect this and follow the correct channels of communication should they have a concern or something to discuss with us at school.

If you are yet to do so, please take a few minutes to read our Home School Agreement below with your child/ren and discuss it. Once you have done so please follow the link and complete the form.

Next Friday we will be holding our House Cross Country championships. Pupils from across the school will complete the course, each of them earning points for their team. Every point will count, as they will all be totalled together to find out who our winners will be!

All children will be expected to come to school in their PE kit (they may wear their house colour t-shirt) and bring a spare pair of trainers that you don’t mind getting muddy in a carrier bag.

Now onto our celebrations for the week. The catering for this week’s Bucket Filler’s tea party was provided by Mrs Spiller who created some amazing Bucket Filler biscuits…thank you! Those nominated by their teacher joined me for their treat and a drink, along with my weekly tea party questions!

A huge well done to the following children for being nominated by their teachers this week:

N: Jaxon

R: Phoebe

Y1: Tia

Y2: Alfie B

Y3: Ali-May

Y4: Laura

Y5: Ruby

Y6: Ruby

As well as Bucket Fillers, we have handed our Shephalbury LEARNER certificates, recognised those who have had a birthday this week, shared the attendance data and had a look at the house point totals.

Nursery: Leo- Solve               Reception: Sebastian- Think

Year 1: Poppy- Grow                         Year 2: Alfie T- Risk

Year 3: Emilia- Think                                    Year 4: Riley- Stretch

Year 5: Sophia G                                Year 6: Hobie- Reflect

This week saw me hand out 4 Headteacher’s Awards 3 for excellent work in English. Since May this year we have adapted the way that our learners are developing their writing skills using Talk 4 Writing principles to structure our learning. If you would like to find out a bit more about Talk 4 Writing please watch the video via the link below:

The first award was handed out to Elliot in Year 1. He had amazed both Mrs Cargill and Mrs Levy with the progress that he had made from writing his cold task at the start of his English unit, to the hot task at the end. He retold a version of a Katie Morag story fantastically well through his writing. On top of this he was able to analyse and discuss the different parts to his story. A great start to Year 1 Elliot…keep it up!

Next was one of our oldest leaners, Liam B (Y6) who has worked really hard this week on developing his use of personification for effect in his writing. Our Year 6 learners have been linking their English work with their Creative Curriculum topic of World War II, and this week have been developing their descriptive techniques. Liam’s thoughtful and considered use of language to describe a war memorial was fantastic…well done!

The next recipient of a Headteacher’s Award this week was Mayson (Y3). Year 3 have been focusing their English on traditional tales over the last few weeks, and Mayson has done a brilliant job at writing some sentences and improving his handwriting. We are really proud of you Mayson…well done!

Finally this week was Viktor (Y4) for excellent growth in his maths work. His class had been focusing on Roman Numerals, something that Viktor found tricky to start with. However, he took a risk and worked as hard as he could progressing through the challenges that were set for him until he mastered it, and applied his knowledge and understanding. Great work Viktor!

I hope that you all have a great weekend and the weather brightens up a bit for us all!

Friday 24th September 2021

Another busy week across the school has ended with a sea of blue as we support Mrs Smith in raising money for Diabetes UK. A huge thank you to everyone for your donations!

Over the course of the week Mrs Cropley, Mrs Dean and I have been visiting all of our classes to see how our learners have settled back into our school expectations. It is clear how motivated learners are across the school and how much time, effort and energy our staff are putting in to create fantastic opportunities for learning.

Last week we wished Mrs McKenzie well on her attempt to complete the London to Brighton bike ride. I am delighted to say that she achieved her goal of successfully completing the ride in good time. This is something that I know she has committed a lot of time and energy to over the last few months, and we are all really pleased for her, and glad that we could support her along the way.

Next Friday we will be supporting another charity that I know many of you will have supported in the past. We will be taking part in the ‘Big Coffee Morning’ in aid of Macmillan. We will be providing all pupils with a cake so that they are able to take part.

If you are able to provide some bakes please ensure that they are nut and sesame free and drop them off on the stable on either Thursday or Friday morning next week. We would encourage you to make a donation via Gateway, although cash will be accepted on Friday (no change will be given). To find out more about the work that Macmillan do please follow the link below:

Earlier on this week learners from across the school got to take part in their first House Afternoon of the year. This was a chance for pupils to get together with the other staff and pupils that are in their house team, participate in some teams building games, sing songs and create a joint display for their board in the hall. It was great to see learners of all ages working together to support each other and build up their team comradery…we are looking forward to the next one already!

Today we said a temporary farewell to Mrs Hart who is beginning her maternity leave. We are wishing her, and her husband, much luck and sending best wishes for the next few weeks and beyond as they prepare for the birth of their first child.

Someone else who we will be saying goodbye to in the next few weeks is Mr Gorman, who after 5 years working at Shephalbury Park will be leaving us for a job in private industry facilities maintenance. I would like to extend my thanks to him on behalf of our school community for the work and development that he has contributed to our school during his time here. We are incredibly fortunate to have such well maintained and well developed facilities and this is a result of Mr Gorman’s skills and commitment to his role. Thank you!

We are currently advertising for a new caretaker, if you or anyone that you know would be interested in finding out more about the role, or if you know someone that would like to apply please follow the link below:

Now onto our celebrations for the week. This week Mrs Dean very kindly provided our Bucket Fillers with a choice of cakes, jam and buttercream sandwich, chocolate icing sandwich or a plain fairy bun. Needless to say they were all a massive hit at my tea party…thank you to Mrs Dean for making them!

A huge well done to the following children for being nominated by their teachers this week for demonstrating all of the traits that we expect of a Bucket Filler around our school:

N: Elara

R: Isabelle

Y1: Eleanor

Y2: Joy

Y3: Ephraim

Y4: George P

Y5: Ethan M

Y6: Henry

As well as Bucket Fillers, we have handed our Shephalbury LEARNER certificates, recognised those who have had a birthday this week, shared the attendance data and had a look at the house point totals.

As always our staff have seen pupils from around the school working hard to demonstrate the 7 attributes that make up a Shephalbury LEARNER, reflect, solve, create, grow, risk, think, stretch, grow and risk through the lessons and activities that they have participated in. Nursery: Arthur- Think                                 Reception: Esmie - Create

Year 1: Henry G- Risk                                   Year 2: Tommy- Grow

Year 3: Bella- Think                                       Year 4: Damon- Grow

Year 5: Jessie-Mae- Grow                            Year 6: Miles - Grow

Also handed out in assembly this week for the first time in a while, were our Numbots and TTRS certificates. There were many learners recognised as they have been working hard to achieve new levels in both activities. A huge well done to all of those who received certificates, especially in our Year 1 class where they have only just started their Numbots journey!

This week saw me hand out a whole host of Headteacher’s Awards.

Firstly was one of our arrivals in Reception…Phoebe visited me this week with her amazing poster created about the story of Room on the Broom. She had made some thoughtful choices in creating it and could tell me much of the story. A great start to your journey as a Shephalbury LEARNER…keep it up Phoebe!

Next up this week were 3 learners from our Year 4 class. Laura, Kyrillos and Anjolaoluwa have all excelled in their writing this week, using the strategies and structures of talk4writing to create brilliant build up sections for their fantasy stories. They had each carefully chosen, purposeful vocabulary that gave their writing a great sense of atmosphere. They each shared sections of their work in assembly, which was really well received! Super writing guys…well done!

And my final 3 awards were all for the same reason, and linked to our House Afternoon. Cade, Amelia Q and Hobie (all in Phoenix) really impressed the adults working with their team for the care and support that they provided for the younger members of their team. Fantastic citizenship and responsibility shown by all of them…well done we are proud of you!

As we close out on another week I would just like to take the opportunity to remind you all of a couple of things that we can be doing to keep our community safe. There are currently lots of general illnesses going around at the moment, along with COVID. Symptoms for COVID can be very similar to many common illnesses.

Our best defence for minimising the disruption that COVID can cause in school is by being vigilant and cautious in our approach. If you suspect your child is ill I would request that you take them for a PCR test to rule out COVID and keep our school community safe.

That brings us to the end of the week, I hope that you all enjoy your weekend!

Friday 17th September 2021

The end of another week, and as usual we finished off by celebrating the achievements of some of our learners with our celebration assembly!

At the start of the week, we welcomed all of our Nursery cohort to complete our full complement of classes. They have all settled in fantastically well, and are thoroughly enjoying their opportunity to explore their classroom and the outside area. Mrs Mutch and the team have been really impressed with the way that they have settled into life at Shephalbury Park.

On Thursday this week, we recognised National Teaching Assistants Day. The support staff in our school contribute immensely to the provision that we are able to offer to our community. I would like to thank them all for this, as I know how much difference they all make to life at Shephalbury Park.

Like many of you, I watched Emma Radacanu complete her fairytale win at the US Open. A fantastic achievement that has come about due to her hard work, dedication and confidence in her own abilities. Someone else who has put a lot of hard work and dedication into something recently is Mrs McKenzie. This weekend she will be tackling the London to Brighton bike ride in aid of Sepsis UK. We wish her the best of luck and look forward to hearing about her ride on Monday!

In my previous blog I requested that parents/carers and pupils read, discuss and understand our expectations of them with regards to their behaviour and commitment to learning as a part of our community and complete the online form. Thank you to those of you who have already completed this.

If you are yet to do so, please take a few minutes to read the document below with your child/ren and discuss it. Once you have done so please follow the link and complete the form.

Some of the more eagle eyed of you may have noticed that Mrs Lewis is expecting her second child. We are all delighted for her and her family and wish her well throughout her pregnancy!

Now onto our celebrations for the week. The catering for this week’s Bucket Filler’s tea party was provided by……, a huge thank you for the…. Those nominated by their teacher joined me for their treat and a drink, along with my weekly tea party questions!

This week saw me hand out 2 Headteacher’s Awards.

The first one was for Louis (Y1) for his fantastic story plan. He used a story mountain to plan the story of Katie Morag delivers the mail, and could retell it in great detail. A great start to Year 1 Louis…well done!

Secondly was Dominica (N), who has only be with us for a week. Our Nursery learners have really enjoyed the story ‘We’re Going on a Bear Hunt’ and Dominica created a brilliant picture that helped her to retell parts of the story. It was lovely to hear her describe the different parts to me. Great work Dominica…keep it up!

That brings us to the end of the week, I hope that you all have a restful weekend!

Friday 10th September 2021

Good afternoon! We have arrived at the end of an unusually hot first full week of the 2021-2022 academic year and we are all settling into things really well.

We have welcomed all of our Reception class back to school this week. They have all had lots of fun exploring their new classroom, and reacquainting themselves with the EYFS garden area. Alongside this, many of them are experiencing our school meals for the first time as well. They have done a great job so far, and they have all proven themselves to have excellent manners in and around the dining hall.

Also joining us this week are our new Nursery class. They have all had the opportunity to spend two mornings with Mrs Mutch and the team getting to know each other and their new surroundings. They too have all done fantastically well and we are really proud of the start that all of them have made to their journey with us at Shephalbury Park.

It was lovely to be able to welcome many of you to meet the teachers at school this week. Our learners in all year groups have spent time getting to know and understand the new expectations in their year groups, and we know how much they enjoy being able to show you their learning environments. As a school, we thrive on the positive relationships we develop with all stakeholders, and are excited by the prospect of hopefully, being able to re-establish more opportunities to meet and share with you over this coming year.

On my journeys around school and into classrooms, I have already seen a fantastic array of learning taking place across the curriculum. Learners creating and using story maps for the development of their writing, learners challenging themselves at different levels in maths and learners accessing the wonderful array of books in our beautiful library. All classes have a purposeful and calm atmosphere, something that we should all be proud of!

At this time of year we request that parents/carers and pupils read, discuss and understand our expectations of them with regards to their behaviour and commitment to learning as a part of our community. Below you will find a copy of our Home School Agreement, please ensure that you read it together and understand the expectations that are set out in it. Once you have done this, please complete the survey (via the link below) to confirm that both you and your child/ren agree to uphold these expectations. Thank you all in advance!

Mrs Smith has been taking on the ‘One Million Step Challenge’ in aid of Diabetes UK over the last couple of months, and is very close to making it to two million steps! We would like to offer her our support in raising money for this very worthy charity. On Friday 24th September we will be having a wear blue to school day (non-school uniform, wear some blue clothes) in return for a £1 donation to supplement Mrs Smith’s efforts in raising money. Either pupils can bring their donation to school, or it can be made via the Gateway app.

If you would like to find out more about Diabetes UK and what your donation will be going towards please follow the link below:

Now onto our first celebrations of the year. This week inparticular held much excitement for many, as we saw the return of Mr Conway’s Bucket Fillers’ Tea Party for the first time in nearly 18 months. Those learners who are nominated by their teacher on a weekly basis get the chance to attend my office for a special tea party with cakes and drinks. It is always a highlight of my week, as is seeing what the other members of staff have baked/bought for the children.

A huge well done to the following children for being nominated by their teachers this week. They were all treated to some of Mr Conway’s very special chocolate chunk muffins:

R: Teddy-James

Y1: Skylar

Y2: Freddie

Y3: Sofia

Y4: James

Y5: Lewis

Y6: Richie

As well as Bucket Fillers, we have handed our Shephalbury LEARNER certificates, recognised those who have had a birthday this week, shared the attendance data and had a look at the house point totals.

As always our staff have seen pupils from around the school working hard to demonstrate the 7 attributes that make up a Shephalbury LEARNER, reflect, solve, create, grow, risk, think, stretch, grow and risk through the lessons and activities that they have participated in. Reception: Jaiden-Risk

Year 1: Daniel-Think                         Year 2: Emily-Stretch

Year 3: Roma-Create                         Year 4: Phoebe-Stretch

Year 5: Alessia-Solve                         Year 6: Henry-Solve

I have also handed out my first Headteacher’s award of the year this week. Joe (Y5) has really impressed with his drawing skills when recreating and image from a World War II poster. Well done Joe!

Next week sees the resumption of our extra-curricular clubs. We have seen a great uptake in some of these already, but there are a couple, which would really benefit a few more participants.

Girls’ football (Y3-6), tag rugby (Y5&6) and drama club (Y5&6) all have spaces available in them and would be beneficial to many. Participants need no prior experience, knowledge or special equipment…only a good attitude and a willingness to take part.

In addition to these, there are still a handful of spaces left in other clubs. Check out Schoolcomms to book a place before you make a payment.

Have a great weekend and see you on Monday,

Ben Conway

Welcome back to a new academic year at Shephalbury Park Primary School! It has been fantastic to see so many happy faces coming back to school over the last couple of days.

Our learners have returned in Years 1-6, and we have welcomed some new learners in our Reception class this week. We look forward to the rest of their class mates joining them next week, and our new Nursery learners starting their induction days next week as well.

We have also welcomed a few new members of staff to our team over the past couple of days, Miss Kenyon teaching Year 2, Miss Cordner teaching Year 6, Miss Stringer as a teaching assistant in Year 4 and Mrs Ashby as a support teaching assistant. We look forward to working with them all over the coming months and years!

In addition to our new members of staff is a member of staff with a name change…following her wedding during the summer Miss Lucas is now Mrs Mutch. Huge congratulations to Mrs Mutch and her husband on their wedding!

There have been a few a few other additions around the school over the summer, including some fantastic new graphics for our Shephalbury LEARNER principles and the installation of 2 Activ-alls (reaction wall games). We also have some incredible giant sunflowers that were planted by our new Year 2 pupils at the end of last year!

Upon returning to school this week, our learners in all classes have been getting to know the expectations and routines of their new year group. They are all settling back in well, and gearing up to prove themselves to be true Shephalbury LEARNERS and bucket fillers on a daily basis in and around our school.

Our classes will be using their own blogs as a regular method of sharing news, recognising great work and providing more information about what is happening in the curriculum. Keep an eye on these by following the link below:

We currently have a vacancy for a parent governor on our governing body. This is an important role that supports our school in providing the best opportunities for our learners, staff and wider community. A letter and nomination form has been emailed to all parents/carers on our mailing list. To find out more information regarding the role please contact me to discuss it further.

I am delighted that we will be able to begin offering a wide range of extra-curricular provision this term. Full details have been emailed out to all parents/carers. If you didn’t receive this you can download it below. All paid clubs must be booked online through the Gateway app, and will go live from 9am on the morning of Saturday 4th September.

My blog next week will include our first celebrations of the year, recognising Shephalbury LEARNERS, bucket fillers and a whole lot more.

Have a great weekend!
