Computing

“A high-quality computing education equips pupils to use computational thinking and creativity to understand and change the world” - National Curriculum.

Intent:

Computers are essential to everyday life, and at  Shephalbury Park we recognise the importance of a high-quality computing education so pupils are prepared to live in the technical world. We aim to provide our students with a broad variety of opportunities to use technology throughout the curriculum, as well as in weekly Computing lessons. In addition to this, we also recognise the potential risks the online world can bring and we ensure that children have a strong understanding of Online Safety to ensure they remain safe.

Implementation:

Each class has a one hour lesson of Computing per week, following the NCCE (National Centre for Computing Education). The NCCE curriculum is underpinned by the 12 Principles of Computing Pedagogy below. It aims to support pupils in the acquisition of knowledge through the use of key concepts, terms, and vocabulary, providing opportunities to build a shared and consistent understanding. Children then work collaboratively and are provided opportunities for hands-on experience to enhance their learning.

The units of computing are based on a spiral curriculum, starting by revisiting the learning from previous years to consolidate and then building on this with new knowledge and experiences. There is also scaffolding in place for those who need it and extra challenges provided to ensure that all children can progress and thrive.

Computers are also used across the curriculum, with particularly strong links with Mathematics, Science and Design and Technology. Our children are given the opportunities to use technology in a variety of forms, applying their knowledge in different situations and building on past experiences. We also provide opportunities for technology to be used for Home Learning and regularly run an after-school computing club.

Online Safety is also a vital part of our children’s education to ensure they can safely and responsibly use technology, knowing what to do and who to speak to if something goes wrong. Together we learn how to conduct ourselves appropriately on digital platforms, always speaking to others with kindness and respect. Online Safety is taught not only as part of the Computing Curriculum, but also in PSHE lessons as well.

Impact:

Shephalbury Park students greatly enjoy computing and are passionate about technology and how to use this safely. They have a confident understanding of the different areas of the computing curriculum and enjoy all opportunities to apply their computing knowledge across the curriculum. They are able to work collaboratively using technology and can use their understanding to safely and effectively navigate the world of technology.
