Autumn Curriculum Letter - Year 5
Thursday 2nd September 2021
Welcome back Year 5! We hope you have had a restful break and you are all raring to go with our new school year! We are really looking forward to what we hope will be an uninterrupted and enjoyable year!
This term we will be looking at Warning and Wishing tales, discussions, recounts and poetry in English. We will also be delving into our Maths curriculum, starting with Place value, addition and subtraction.
We also start a new topic and the theme this term is War and Peace. We will be looking at war (specifically WW2) and just as importantly - peace - and how it came about. We will look at how Stevenage was affected and what life was like back then whilst interweaving Design Technology, Art and Poetry into the topic.
Our first Guided Reading text is You Are Awesome, which we hope will help us to maintain a growth mindset throughout the year. Science will begin with looking at Forces, RE will start with Rules for Living - specifically in Judaism and Christianity and we will be coding in computing.
PE will be on a Friday so please do come in already dressed in your PE kit. This begins on Friday 10th September. We will be looking at Outdoor and Adventurous activities this half term before delving into dance as we lead into Christmas.
Finally, homework is as normal. Please read 3 times a week and have your reading record signed by an adult who has heard you read and discussed the text with you. Times Table Rockstars will need to be played for 30 minutes a week. This is currently made up of 15 minutes in Garage and 15 minutes in Arena. There will also be 10 spellings a week with an expectation of getting at least 5 correct upon testing on a Friday.
We are really looking forward to this year and hope you are too. In the meantime if you have any questions, please contact year5@shephalburypark.herts.sch.uk
